To call my son this?

DP and I are expecting our second child. We have a DD already and now expecting a son.

We have really struggled with names and I came up with Dorian which although I do like (and DP is set on) I'm not sure.

What are your thoughts?

I only know of 2 - both women.
1 a friend of my parents and the other the character from Birds of a Feather.
I don't really like it for a girl, but definitely don't like it for a boy.

Yes, YABU to post a baby names thread in AIBU, when there is a whole section of the board for Baby names, on which everybody is very happy to give honest opinions.

NotYoda · 18/07/2017 17:55

BTW. Often adults think that children will 'bully' children for their name, or associate it with something else, but they won't. It's adults who'll look askance because they are the ones making the links. I doubt kids these days have heard of Dorian Green, or the name Doreen.

foxyloxy78 · 18/07/2017 17:56

Nah, not a fan

toosexyforyahshirt · 18/07/2017 17:57

My main thought is that there is a full and busy section for baby names and this isn't it.
My other thought is that Dorian is hideous.

SamanthaUnkim · 18/07/2017 17:58

Nope. He's going to hate it when he goes to school

VickyRsuperstar · 18/07/2017 17:58

I think of Dorian Yates the body builder as my hubby knows a lot about him and I think he even met him!
I don't particularly like the name myself, but that's just me!
As for the film, I called my youngest son Austin and at the time I wondered if anyone would make jokes about Austin Powers the movies...then I realized how old the movie was and by the time he went to school I couldn't see any child using it as a joke against him. I think the film Dorian Gray (released 2009) is likely to be very old history and not something people would readily associate with the name if you want to use it.

Beachbaby2017 · 18/07/2017 17:59

I think the name is fine but I think the Dorian Gray association is inescapable. His peers might not know the story when they're little but given how widely read the story is, there's a good chance they'll read it eventually.

Tastesjustlikecherrycola85 · 18/07/2017 17:59

I like it

SquedgieBeckenheim · 18/07/2017 18:05

I know a Dorian. Very nice man.

gamerwidow · 18/07/2017 18:05

I know a Dorian he was a bit of a pretentious tit as a teen but he is a well known newspaper columnist now and seems nice enough.
It does have obvious literary associations but it's a great book.

Shakirasma · 18/07/2017 18:05

The birds of a feather woman was pronounced Door-ian, not dor-ian.

I know one, mid 30s and rather fit.

I like it.

ellestyle · 18/07/2017 18:05

Sorry don't agree about kids not making jibes about unusual names. Adults think it but wouldn't say anything, kids won't hold back. It only takes one kid to say something, before you know the name will stick.

Boulshired · 18/07/2017 18:06

I knew a Dorian years ago, he hated it and went by the name Doren instead. He eventually got it legally changed.

NataliaOsipova · 18/07/2017 18:07

I immediately thought of birds of a feather, quickly followed by Dorian Grey!!!

So did I!

MsLexicon · 18/07/2017 18:07

Just keep checking on the picture in the attic.

DownstairsMixUp · 18/07/2017 18:10

I rarely reply to baby name threads but this is a horrible name.

Notknownatthisaddress · 18/07/2017 18:11

Yep, Dorian from Birds of a feather. And it has been on recently so many younger folk are aware of the name too.

Not keen sorry OP. Sad

ireallydontlikefootball · 18/07/2017 18:13

I actually like that name. I struggled with boys names but this would definitely be on my list.

thekillers · 18/07/2017 18:14

How would you pronounce it?

Doorian

or

Duhrian

or

Dohrian

SomethingOnce · 18/07/2017 18:14

What about DeLorean instead? [helpful]

ireallydontlikefootball · 18/07/2017 18:14

I am aware of Dorian Gray and that's probably why I like it so much. I like unusual names though.

Lynnm63 · 18/07/2017 18:15

I'm not keen, if you go with the name whatever you do don't get his portrait painted.

BattleaxeGalactica · 18/07/2017 18:16

He will be Doreen if not in primary most certainly all the way through secondary. Joseph Dorian however would be fine.

HidingUnderARock · 18/07/2017 18:19

To be fair any name could turn up in a film or other media and become a joke name.
I discounted Richard and William for the obvious shortenings but they are still popular names.

notangelinajolie · 18/07/2017 18:19

Dorian - Birds of a Feather. Don't do it OP.
