To be fucking sick of ginger hair comments?

BlurryFace · 15/05/2017 14:02

My 2 DSs are both under school age and ever since their hair came in I get to hear comments on it from strangers. Sometimes its complimentary, other times it's tuff like "ooh he's going to hate his hair when he's older bless him" or "he's going to get picked on with that hair".

It doesn't ruin my day or anything, I just think "get some social skills you twat" while going 'mmm, really'. I am ginger for Christ's sake, so even if it goes over the boys' heads I can fucking understand it. When I was pregnant with DS1 SIL (who I like) said "oh DH, wouldn't it be funny if you two had a ginger kid? Oh no offense, BlurryFace."

I just feel sick of shrugging off ginger this, ginger that comments. I've been doing it for 20+ years, my own mother has said she thought it a shame I was ginger when I was born. I got all the ginger pubes (what other colour would my pubes be, dumb fuck?) comments at school, but everyone hated me anyway, it was just bonus ammo.

Next time I think I'm going to ask if the person who thinks my kids will hate their hair hate their own nose/jaw/body shape.

I've got ginger hair and yes it gets very tiresome. Although to be honest the compliments on my hair colour far outweigh the negatives.
My parents used to call me carrot top/little ginger etc in an affectionate way (on purpose) so the bullies never really upset me that much.
I was usually rather bemused that they thought calling me 'ginger' was an insult.
"Yes I have ginger hair, and your point is??"
Was a common response.
I remember telling a boy once, "yes I have ginger hair, but I can dye my hair... there's not much you can do about your ugly face" Grin

Wombler
She's gorgeous - love the red hair and blue eyes combination Smile

mummc2 · 15/05/2017 22:07

Dd2 has as we only ever call it in our house auburn hair we have never used the word ginger mainly because of the stigma and general negativity attached to it. Yes she is fair skinned but has dark eyelashes and brown/hazel eyes and it has gotten a darker since she was born (now 9yr old)
We have only ever got positive comments on it (it's also curly) but tbh her sisters hair is much nicer really thick nice natural wave to it and styles so well she could just wash and go and it look amazing but the auburn hair takes a lot more work

Ginger782 · 15/05/2017 22:13

When my DH called my FIL to tell him our DD had been born, the first thing he said was "but she doesn't have red hair, does she?"
To the PP who said her husband is Australian and this doesn't exist here Hmm. I can't count how many times strangers have yelled from moving cars "dirty fucking ranga!", "ginger pubes!", "red headed rat rooter!" and so many others We are literally planning on moving cities because this place is not somewhere I want my DD raised.

The term "ranga" is always defended as banter too. It's a dirivative of "orangutan"...It was made popular by a (very funny) comedian called Chris Lilley. Unfortunately all the bogans in this country grabbed it and ran with it. They don't realise that by using the term ranga they are emulating the type of person Lilley was mocking in his skits.

This thread has made me both very sad and very happy.

DD had the same silvery white blonde hair as me, lovely hair (even if I do say so myself) Hmm but we both received shitty comments at school. I was told I loved myself because of my hair, DD was called names like albino and icecream head. I think it's the same for redheads, it started off with jealousy, then the goons got on the bandwagon and it became a national pastime. Hilarious for them to crack their dull, boring jokes about redheads. I had to stop a friend from telling dumb blonde jokes in front of DD who was only young and looking sad thinking it was all aimed at her. This dull ex friend bleached her hair. Bleached blondes telling dumb blonde jokes, I see it all the time. Grin

What's not to love about red hair, it's just gorgeous. It's so vibrant and stands out. There were two sisters at the local school, one had beautiful curly red hair and the other one had a mousy colour. The girl with the red hair was quite stunning, even though her sister was as pretty she wasn't as noticeable.

Raaaaaah · 15/05/2017 22:30

My best friend at high school had red hair and was the most popular with boys in the year. A real beauty.
Both my DDs are red heads. They get so many comments on it. Only very occasionally negative. One lady said that her daughter had been born with red hair and had it stayed she would have dyed it Shock. My mum was for some reason thrilled to have red headed Granddaughters.

I just don't get the big deal. No one comments on my greying mousy brown locks Grin.

Bluewombler2k · 15/05/2017 22:33

Beautiful hair privatepike I am currently washed out brown with wiry grey at the front, sides, top, you get the idea! Would love to dye my hair red but even though I am pale it would not suit me. So I am very jealous of yours and all of the other auburn heads I have seen and read about on this thread.

Thank you violet. People have said that the blue eyes/red hair combination is quite rare but I have a few friends with those colourings so was quite surprised by this

Raaaaaah · 15/05/2017 22:34

Lovely hair on your lad purple by the way!

Lots of fab ginger locks on this thread! Grin

WomanScorned · 15/05/2017 23:02

I'm sitting here, right now with a 'ginger' hair dye and a carrier bag on my head, btw.
I thought the colour was desirable Confused

GaelicSiog · 15/05/2017 23:03

The problem with the so called ginger dyes is you can't bottle perfection Wink

Willyoujustbequiet · 15/05/2017 23:05

It's the best colour. Makes you stand out.

My daughter has the most amazing wavy red /auburn hair down to her bum. We only ever had positive gushing comments. That may be because we are in the borders and ginger is common here.

I do think insulting people based on their hair colour is no different to racism.

ZuzuMyLittleGingersnap · 15/05/2017 23:05

On behalf of fellow redheads everywhere, of whatever shade and tone, and especially on behalf of our "ginger" children:

Seth Green. From Buffy-era.

I'm also a big fan of Damien Lewis and Kevin McKidd (who I can't decide if he's ginger or not, but it's close enough).

I like ginger men.

ShmooBooMoo · 15/05/2017 23:42

Oh my, Petals, your daughter's hair is absolutely breathtaking!
