To be fucking sick of ginger hair comments?

BlurryFace · 15/05/2017 14:02

My 2 DSs are both under school age and ever since their hair came in I get to hear comments on it from strangers. Sometimes its complimentary, other times it's tuff like "ooh he's going to hate his hair when he's older bless him" or "he's going to get picked on with that hair".

It doesn't ruin my day or anything, I just think "get some social skills you twat" while going 'mmm, really'. I am ginger for Christ's sake, so even if it goes over the boys' heads I can fucking understand it. When I was pregnant with DS1 SIL (who I like) said "oh DH, wouldn't it be funny if you two had a ginger kid? Oh no offense, BlurryFace."

I just feel sick of shrugging off ginger this, ginger that comments. I've been doing it for 20+ years, my own mother has said she thought it a shame I was ginger when I was born. I got all the ginger pubes (what other colour would my pubes be, dumb fuck?) comments at school, but everyone hated me anyway, it was just bonus ammo.

Next time I think I'm going to ask if the person who thinks my kids will hate their hair hate their own nose/jaw/body shape.

Blury - that IS my dog!! Haha

Now is being mistaken for a cat worse than being called 'ginger'??

(Don't worry she's only a pup haha)

Sexstarvedredhead · 15/05/2017 20:49

And freckles. Scary/ Funny/ Story. I was at playgroup and a small toddler grabbed at my arm. Clearly expecting a texture to my freckles (sort of stroked them). Her mum looked horrified. I thought she was embarrassed and said "it's ok, children often ask about them".
She said "What are they though?"
"Freckles" I say, trying to prevent my eyebrows from hiking.
"Oh, you should cover them up love". I turned away and considered my options. To hear laughing from freckle hater and her friend. The group leader didn't know what the fuck to say so I just left.

knitknack · 15/05/2017 20:50

And PLEASE can we have pictures of everyone's ginger dogs?!

stitchglitched · 15/05/2017 20:52

I know. Children are being kicked, bullied, asked about their pubic hair by grown men. But the most important thing here is that spring be allowed to tell us how repulsive she finds our children. Fuck off, spring, yeah?

BlurryFace · 15/05/2017 20:56

Oops knitknack, I only glanced at the thumbnail which cuts her head off. Blush

I've reported the open-minded supermodel that is Spring.

What a pitiful person. Has a similar writing style/world view as a certain DM crone columnist, who unlike us gingers, has long, black hair. Bitter horrid views. Urgh. Sad

Clairescottshug · 15/05/2017 20:57

As a ginger myself I had the horrible comments but also the positive, sadly it took my hairdresser to say people are always asking for my colour to believe what my mum told me.. people want and dye their hair that colour.. I have been growing out my short hair and had my hair scraped back for a few years... blow dry and straighten and lots of people at work complimenting my colour and asking where/when I had it done! Did zip all..all mine Halo have three toddlers, a girl (dark brown hair) a boy (blonde) then number three we were asked what will you have.. meaning gender ..my husband said ginger Grin in a hopeful way! She has hints of it.. all excited to see, she will rock it if she is xx

SugarnetMum · 15/05/2017 20:58

I love ginger hair and have often dyed my dark brown , black hair to a coppery ginger!/

Littledidsheknow · 15/05/2017 20:59

Such twattishness on this otherwise nice thread,
God I hate the word "banter". Anything I've ever seen described as it could also be described as being a complete and utter nob end.

Here's a nice antidote...

Sexstarved, that is ridiculous. I'm not very freckly, but know some gingers who are freckly head to toe. They would have to be in burkhas to hide the shame that is (gasp) freckles.

Ginger here too. Have had all the comments over the years - pubes, Duracell battery, carrots etc etc etc HOWEVER as I age I ain't going grey!!!

Love all the ginger pictures.

Bibbitybobbitybollocks · 15/05/2017 21:02

Is Spring Katie Hopkins? Hmm I'm actually lost for words. Although a few choice ones come to mind Angry

RosieposiePuddingandPi · 15/05/2017 21:05

My sister has the most beautiful thick ginger hair that is admired by many but she got/still gets the 'ginger pubes' comments at 25 - she has a wonderfully aggressive response (developed in school) if someone says it of grabbing her waistband like she's going to pull her trousers down and shouting 'yeah they're ginger, do you wanna see?!' Shuts people up v quickly Grin

I've found my people Flowers

Any redheads who are fed up of insulting comments, just move away from England! Kind of a big step to take but it would solve your problem. The redhead-hate is very much an English thing. Never encountered it anywhere else. I grew up in Ireland and only ever had compliments about my hair. The first time I was teased about it was on my one and only trip to visit a relative in England when I was 7 and a local boy started calling me 'Marmalade... because of your hair'.

Now I live in the US and, again, only ever get compliments about my red (now more auburn) hair. Unfortunately both of my kids were born with very blond, fair hair and I'm disappointed as I was hoping for at least one redhead like myself!

GinIsIn · 15/05/2017 21:12

springflowers - you know what's more unattractive than any hair colour? Bigotry. And poor spelling. Perhaps you should stick to reading things with shorter words as you clearly haven't understood the OP at all.

GinIsIn · 15/05/2017 21:14

springflowers - You mention your DH preferring blondes. So is it ok for me to say that means he likes his women thick as pig shit? It's ok for me to make a wildly inaccurate and offensive generalisation based on hair colour, because hey - I haven't said it in real life. but here you are, proving the stereotype...

Littledidsheknow · 15/05/2017 21:15

Whilst I'm in full on ginger appreciation mode, I have recalled two crushes of mine from yesteryear; From my teens Eric Stoltz, and a bit later Seth Green:

People are so rude and ignorant.

I am dark haired, as is my dh. When I was pregnant, several people said to me, with glee - '2 darks can make a ginger , you know!'. Shock And when I left work, someone actually wrote in my card, 'hope it's not ginger!'. Shock

So rude!

Somebody may have posted this already:

news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/6725653.stm

"While there has been at least one report of a serious anti-red hair hate crime in the UK - a 20-year-old stabbed in the back in 2003 - it's unclear whose responsibility it is to monitor discrimination."

I mean... No, the OP is definitely not being unreasonable. But I'm really saddened that so many people seem to think it's acceptable and nobody is willing to do anything against it.
If this is really rooted in anti-celtic sentiment then that seems especially sinister...

Before coming to the UK I honestly didn't know that red hair was supposed to be "bad" according to anybody... Honestly never heard a bad thing about this hair colour before going to the UK (but some unfortunate stuff about blond hair I did indeed hear...)

Some of my relatives were actually rather excited by the idea that DH and I may have a "real" redheaded child (many of my male cousins for example have red beards, but not read hair...)

DH has red hair. Our DD1 has very blonde hair, currently actually really light blonde, but seeing as she's still little I imagine it will darken.

Maybe DD2 will have red hair? That would be lovely, seeing as I really like DH's hair and red hair is really beautiful imo. (not that I don't like DD's hair)

Pop24 · 15/05/2017 21:23

Heard it all. MIL said when I was expecting that if baby was ginger I would have to dye it's hair in the bath secretly (but she is a total bitch). My daughter hasn't inherited red hair and I'm sad to say I was relieved. I'm not very ginge anymore so maybe it's that but I feel ginger hate/pis taking is rather old fashioned these days? Red hair seems to be very 'in' and desirable for adults, deff for women, but even the guys are getting a look in. Can see that it's still a problem for kids though. I've never understood why it's still socially acceptable to comment negatively on ginger hair when it no way acceptable to do so on any other type of colouring?

Maudlinmaud · 15/05/2017 21:23

Littledidsheknow don't even go there. Men with red hair are my obsession, I go into full perve mode. I ran about telly addicts like a mad thing when Greg was on strictly. Greeeeeeeggggg!!!!

rainbowsandsunshine · 15/05/2017 21:23

Lovely photos everyone.

My DD gets loads of comments on how beautiful her hair is. I don't understand all the nastiness towards ginger hair, I think it is beautiful and am very jealous!

spring I wasn't annoyed with you earlier as you are making yourself look like a bellend but the more I thought about your comments, the more they pissed me off. So, here you go here is another photo of my 'coppertop and pasty' DD. I am proud of her beautiful hair and complexion and am proud to be her Mum when people comment on her hair.
But oh, isn't she just so 'unfortunate-looking. and this is not a stealth post to show off my DD's beautiful hair, face, smile, eyes etc
