To promote her new film. Can't these A listers just wear a classy outfit?

without being judged

Who is doing the judging? Other women and feminists

quencher · 02/03/2017 16:08

@Misswatch not all feminist. Stop generalising. We all don't think the same way.

@Shove was not being absurd. I wonder what she would say to being graded like cattle based on her youth along side Emma. The formula for which society grades women against one another. Creating insecurities and negative body-image for those who do not conform to the beauty you regard as better. Isn't beauty on the eyes of the beholder? Maybe the older her is much better looking.

That's true @japad

TizzyDongue · 02/03/2017 16:36

@Missswatch - i said society judges - you've decided that means women and feminists. There's men who involved in that judgment too.

Whether you are a man or a woman isn't clear. You are quite obviously not a feminist, and havs some goady agenda.

Not all women are feminists, and not all feminists are women.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 02/03/2017 16:47

"Performing femininity" is a thing. Some women do it. It is an anti feminist thing to do

Given that femininity involves being more empathetic and less violent and less selfish perhaps rather sneering at "femininty" some traditional feminine attributes might be encouraged for wholesale adoption.

In the context of clothes I'm utterly fed up of the assumption that the choice to wear anything pretty or feminine is made just for the male gaze.

Missswatch · 02/03/2017 16:49

Brb off to check myself

Nope. No goadyness here. Much like trollhunting, accusations of being goady seem like the new thing

shovetheholly · 02/03/2017 16:51

As a side note, there is a strong school of feminist thought that thinks all gender is performed (constructed) to a socially-provided "script" that this is a disciplinary effect of power imbalances - and that behaviours that draw attention to the artificiality of the performance are liberating!

BertrandRussell · 02/03/2017 17:36

Using the term "performing" femininity" is not sneering at femininity.

Elendon · 02/03/2017 17:37

Lass I agree.

Elendon · 02/03/2017 17:46

I'm allowed to say who is attractive and who is not. That is my opinion.

I don't like the photos. That's just a personal opinion on the visual. Watson does have lovely breasts though.

Certainly not approved of though is it?

We will have to disagree on whether it is meant to be sneering. Context is everything and it frequently comes across as very judgemental with the little undertone of "and too stupid to even realise it" .

Elendon · 02/03/2017 18:25

I've no idea what a 'classy outfit' is.

DioneTheDiabolist · 02/03/2017 19:31

Me neither, but I think it involves a cardigan.

coconuttella · 02/03/2017 21:39

No amount of feminist hectoring could or should stop breasts being sexually attractive I don't think feminists would want to.......

Really? If those on this thread are anything to go by many (including the response above yours) believe the sexual attraction to breasts is down solely to socialisation (which is nonsense) and should be entirely desexualised and regarded as only as feeding implements for babies...

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 02/03/2017 22:18

In a chapter in the book "Breastfeeding: Biocultural Perspectives" (Aldine de Gruyter, 1995), cultural anthropologist Katherine Dettwyler describes telling friends in Mali about sexual foreplay involving breasts and getting responses ranging from "bemused to horrified."

"In any case, they regarded it as unnatural, perverted behavior, and found it difficult to believe that men would become sexually aroused by women's breasts, or that women would find such activities pleasurable," Dettwyler wrote.

I dont think all cultures find breasts sexy

Missswatch · 02/03/2017 23:56

In that book those that were bemused and horrified were socially conditioned to find it that way

FreeNiki · 03/03/2017 02:57

Just saw this on facebook.

The irony.....

To be disappointed that feminist Emma Watson has posed topless
bummymummy77 · 03/03/2017 03:14

Doesn't bother me so much because it isn't at all tacky.

bummymummy77 · 03/03/2017 03:16

And seriously, it's just bloody boobs. I've been pretty much topless for the last 3.5 years in public feeding ds and they've lost all their mystique! Grin

coconuttella · 03/03/2017 07:42

FreeNiki

You're assuming her 'topless' pose was in order to get male attention.... seems like she's got a lot of female attention instead! Besides, on a 1-10 titillation range, this would barely scrape a 2... it's hardly taken in a way to register with those men wanting to 'gaze' at photos of women for sexual kicks.

coconuttella · 03/03/2017 07:58

Rufus

The prevailing culture in Mali is hardly conducive to healthy views on women's sexual pleasure given that FGM has been rife there!...

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 03/03/2017 08:35

Indeed. A report in 2013 puts the rate at over 92% of women affected with over 70% being cut by age 5.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 03/03/2017 08:53

cocoa

According to that same article out of 191 cultures only 13 see breasts as sexual

That was just one of the examples given

My understanding before i looked was that other cutures dont see breasts as being sexual

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 03/03/2017 09:05

From a commentary on that study

Her study took place in the same area where young girls breasts are ironed in order to make them small, flat, and less appealing to men, allowing the girls to escape the advances of men and ideally continue their education without the burden of teen pregnancy. I would say that is in direct opposition to her findings, and much more telling of the true nature of how men in those areas perceive breasts

slinkysaluki · 03/03/2017 09:09

She's not topless she has clothes on. Her choice.

slinkysaluki · 03/03/2017 09:10

Thought that was the point of feminism if that's what you want to call it
