Meanwhile, what was his excellent plan to defeat ISIS?
Nothing. He has no clue.
So, in a recent memo:

"Section 3 (“Plan to Defeat ISIS”) instructs the Secretary of Defense to immediately develop “a new plan to defeat ISIS.” The Secretary must submit a preliminary draft to the President within 30 days. The plan must include:

“a comprehensive strategy . . . for the defeat of ISIS”;

“recommended changes to . . . rules of engagement . . . that exceed the requirements of international law”;

plans for diplomatic, information, and cyber operations;

“new coalition partners”;

“mechanisms to cut off or seize ISIS’s financial support”; and

a means to fund the new plan."

snapcrap · 29/01/2017 08:57

Do you think he is stirring up so many wasp nests because actually wants a war with the middle east so he can 'legitamely' nuke Iran/Iraq/Syria?

Serious question.

Peregrina · 29/01/2017 08:58

Better military brains that Trump have not been able to defeat ISIS. When will they get rid of him. Will it take the destruction of a war in the West, to get rid of him? (I say West because look at places like Aleppo).

IrenetheQuaint · 29/01/2017 09:00

Israel would probably veto a nuclear strike near them, but yes I do think Trump wants to destroy Iran at least.

amispartacus · 29/01/2017 09:02

Conservative MP banned by Trump is on Marr.

OP posts:
borntobequiet · 29/01/2017 09:02

Text of my email to my (female, Conservative) MP:

I write to express my concern about the current state of affairs in the US and our Government's reaction to it.

Mr Trump's administration has banned immigration from a number of countries and this will affect a number of British citizens who hold dual nationality or who were born in those countries. Your colleague the Conservative MP for Stratford upon Avon is one of these people. I used to live in Stratford, have met him and find the situation both ridiculous and chilling.

Mrs May has not commented on this so far and I would like her to condemn it in the strongest terms. Though I accept that she played her meeting with Trump cleverly in some aspects - for example wrt NATO - I found pictures of her hand in hand with the self confessed sexual predator and obvious racist quite sickening.

The parallels in the US with the rise of Hitler in the 1930s are far too striking to be ignored. Does Mrs May want to be seen as a latter-day Chamberlain? We are in tremendous danger from this horrific state of affairs and I hope the Conservative Parliamentary Party will make it clear to the Prime Minister that we have a moral duty to make it clear to the Americans that no trade deals will be forthcoming with such a repugnant US Administration, one that silences its scientists, encourages religious and racial hatred and wishes to remove women's rights to reproductive medicine - especially as we are most unlikely to benefit from any agreement that enables US big pharma to get its hands on the NHS.

BigBadgers · 29/01/2017 09:02

I think the only thing that Trump wants is to stay in power. There is nothing like a nice war to keep an unpopular leader in power.

BigBadgers · 29/01/2017 09:04

That is a nice email born. Do you mind if I shamelessly plagerised it?Grin

squishysquirmy · 29/01/2017 09:05

This thread is moving too fast for me to keep up with! Given that Trump's done almost every ridiculous thing he promised within 7 days of taking office, I think his promise to destroy ISIS in 30 days should be taken very seriously. And we should be worried by what he will be prepared to do in order to "win" over Isis. Not including nukes, I imagine that America has enough conventional weapons to burn several cities into non-existence. He would claim that as a great victory.

GingerIvy · 29/01/2017 09:06

The Dept of Homeland Security press release this morning has all the subtlety of a sledgehammer and reeks of Bannon.

Basically it's a big Fuck You to the judicial orders to stay.

Roussette · 29/01/2017 09:08

snapcrap I have no idea what to think any more. We knew it was going to be bad... just not this bad.

Andrew Marr has a Conservative MP Nadhim Zahawi on the sofa... born in Baghdad, UK citizen, fled Iraq, arrived here as a refugee. Now an MP.

Nadhim Zahawi ✔ @nadhimzahawi
I'm a British citizen & so proud to have been welcomed to this country. Sad to hear i'll be banned from the USA based on my country of birth. A sad sad day to feel like a second class citizen! Sad day for the USA.

merrymouse · 29/01/2017 09:09

Long article but worth reading:

lawfareblog.com/malevolence-tempered-incompetence-trumps-horrifying-executive-order-refugees-and-visas

Moreover, it’s a very dangerous thing to have a White House that can’t with the remotest pretense of competence and governance put together a major policy document on a crucial set of national security issues without inducing an avalanche of litigation and wide diplomatic fallout. If the incompetence mitigates the malevolence in this case, that’ll be a blessing. But given the nature of the federal immigration powers, the mitigation may be small and the blessing short-lived; the implications of having an executive this inept are not small and won’t be short-lived.

It's almost as though this man were actually president!

Spudlet · 29/01/2017 09:09

born I too would like to shamelessly, nay blatantly, plagiarise take inspiration from that email...

Department Of Homeland Security Response To Recent Litigation
Release Date: January 29, 2017
For Immediate Release
Office of the Press Secretary
Contact: 202-282-8010

WASHINGTON – The Department of Homeland Security will continue to enforce all of President Trump’s Executive Orders in a manner that ensures the safety and security of the American people. President Trump’s Executive Orders remain in place—prohibited travel will remain prohibited, and the U.S. government retains its right to revoke visas at any time if required for national security or public safety. President Trump’s Executive Order affects a minor portion of international travelers, and is a first step towards reestablishing control over America's borders and national security.

Approximately 80 million international travelers enter the United States every year. Yesterday, less than one percent of the more than 325,000 international air travelers who arrive every day were inconvenienced while enhanced security measures were implemented. These individuals went through enhanced security screenings and are being processed for entry to the United States, consistent with our immigration laws and judicial orders.

The Department of Homeland Security will faithfully execute the immigration laws, and we will treat all of those we encounter humanely and with professionalism. No foreign national in a foreign land, without ties to the United States, has any unfettered right to demand entry into the United States or to demand immigration benefits in the United States.

The Department of Homeland Security will comply with judicial orders; faithfully enforce our immigration laws, and implement President Trump’s Executive Orders to ensure that those entering the United States do not pose a threat to our country or the American people.

OnionKnight · 29/01/2017 09:15

Apparently the ban effects flight crews too.

merrymouse · 29/01/2017 09:18

Another issue for Theresa is that it's very much England rather than Scotland that is supporting Trump - despite all his 'investment' in Scotland.

I understand why she went to the US, but, she must be aware that a point could be reached when the UK can no longer align itself with Trump. Politically it would be very damaging to her if she stayed too close to him for too long.

Things seem to be moving very fast.

amispartacus · 29/01/2017 09:19

There are countries that ban people based on the country they come from - Israeli passports being the famous one.

That's been a standard response on Twitter - along with 'what's wrong with strong borders'.

I just expect more from the USA.

OP posts:
GingerIvy · 29/01/2017 09:20

Aligning with Trump right now will basically look like aligning with Hitler. She needs to take huge public steps back away from the US.

It appears there are continued demonstrations all over the country.

Oh, I know. Loads of people I see saying "at least we'll be safe this way."

No you won't. This is MORE dangerous. You may as well write the bloody script for the radicalisation of home grown terrorists. It also puts soldiers overseas in more danger.

merrymouse · 29/01/2017 09:22

I just expect more from the USA.

Yes, the 'land of the free' shouldn't be adopting the policies of Saudi Arabia.

Are we all going to wake up soon? Is this a nightmare?

Is this a huge joke being played on us by TV Star Donald Trump?

I voted Brexit and I'm unapologetic about that but I have to admit I never (could never) have predicted that our post Breixit vulnerability, economically speaking, would mean we are in a position whereby our PM can't fully condemn such abhorrent action from the POTUS.
