He can't actually stop people entering the country on the basis of religious beliefs. The first amendment allows for freedom of religion.

So, he has cooked up some small minded stuff on the basis of country of origin based on a formal risk assessment - safe havens and sponsors of terrorism depending on which country it is.

Despite the fact that most acts of terrorism since 9/11 have been carried out by Americans.

I don't know what to say - marking my place Sad

Had DS' birthday party and then DD out with Brownies so haven't really had a chance to sit down and am frankly agog!

I am personally ashamed of the fact that Theresa May has not condemned his actions. WTF! Her answer was not an answer; it was a complete and utter pile not crap - she doesn't have to say it's ridiculous (which it is) or anything inflammatory but to say nothing at all Shock Unbelievable!

Looks like a few Republicans are speaking out against the ban now.

SanFranBear · 28/01/2017 22:48

Oh, and Zebra - Stalin (and the larfely forgotten yet utterly horrendous dictator Mao) are not as roundly condemned because it was their own people they were annihilating. Doesn't make it right or better but I think that's why they are not discussed as widely.

Plus I guess Hitler was on our doorstep and the atrocities happened to people 'like us'.. I don't know, any genocide is heartbreaking and yet so little seems to be learned.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/01/2017 22:49

that's good news Ginger. I am reading everything you post.

That picture of Trump holding hands with May will go down in history.

from the washington post:

More Republicans are speaking out against Trump’s refugee ban. Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell aren’t among them.

Several congressional Republicans on Saturday questioned President Trump’s order to halt admission to the U.S. by refugees and citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries, even as House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) continued to defend it.

Ryan was among the first lawmakers on Friday to back Trump’s order, and his office reiterated his support on Saturday.

“This is not a religious test and it is not a ban on people of any religion,” said spokeswoman AshLee Strong.

There's a drawing floating about of Trump as Jabba the Hut. Grin

amispartacus · 28/01/2017 22:52

From the BBC

Announcing the measures at the Pentagon on Friday, the president said "we will never forget the lessons of 9/11".

But none of the 11 hijackers were from the seven countries affected by the measures - they mostly had Saudi Arabian citizenship.

The perpetrators of other recent attacks in the US that have been linked to Islamic extremism were also not from the seven countries:

The killer of 50 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando in June 2016 was a US citizen whose parents were Afghans
The two people who shot 14 dead in San Bernardino, California, in December 2015, were a US and a Pakistani citizen
The Boston marathon bombers who killed three and injured many more were ethnic Chechens

I just checked out the Mail's website to see how the right wing rags are covering this - you know Trump's gone way, way over the mark when even the coverage in the Mail is uniformly negative (articles about Malala's reaction, articles about Iraq war vets worried for their former comrades...)

Lots of responses asking if he will be complaining about crowd size and voter fraud again?

GingerIvy · 28/01/2017 22:55

Worryingly, I am seeing more and more articles from former military (british and other nations) saying he is courting war.

Oooh Sunday Times has a big article about "Trump and Charles in climate row" and "President won't take lecture from Prince"

I wonder, could Charles scupper the Presidential visit? After all the Queen wasn't well over Christmas, and could be scaling back her activities, leaving at best, a very minor royal to meet Trump.

GingerIvy · 28/01/2017 22:57

From CNN re the 3 new orders he signed today. I have heard the lobbying one would be badly received but I don't know enough about it to explain why.

.....
President Donald Trump signed three executive actions Saturday that imposed a five-year lobbying ban for administration officials, reorganized the National Security Council's structure and called for a plan to be delivered to him within 30 days on how defeat ISIS, administration officials said.

According to the officials, the action regarding the NSC will outline new procedures and organizational structure of the organization to better adapt to the threats. The NSC is led by retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, who spent much of Saturday in the Oval Office as Trump had scheduled phone calls with world leaders.
Administration officials also said the lobbying ban would include a lifetime prohibition on lobbying on behalf of foreign governments.

The mail are reporting the reason he had to hold TM's hand is because he is afraid of stairs...

Surely Hillary could have utilised that in some way!? Like Dr Who and the Daleks Grin

amispartacus · 28/01/2017 23:00

I wonder which countries the US exports to?
It would be a shame to boycott American goods sold abroad, wouldn't it?

There are a lot of US brands out there.

So even if Tory MPs queue up to defend Trump, May won't be able to undo the fact that she (initially) refused to do so, even if there is a belated apology.

SanFranBear · 28/01/2017 23:03

The BBC 11 o'clock news followed up Theresa May's non answer in the opening headlines bit with a John Hurt quote about anarchy descending. I know they have to be neutral but that was hardly subtle Grin
