Smelly Candles and Smugness

I'm currently Christmas window shopping in nice places, with nice stuff. Everywhere I turn is a £££ candle. Bloody piles of the things in every shop, everywhere. Retailers must be preparing for a seriously chi-chi powercut. Or maybe a power-outtage combined with a sewage workers strike.

But who are the people who can literally set fire to £200 for a bit of a nice pong about the place?

AIBU to be so jealous confused?

Pomegranate noir is burning here. Can't have the big ones as the scent is too over powering. Clearly my house isn't big enough.

People spend £200 on a candle because they can. They spend a grand on a washing machine- because they can. And they drop 100k on a car- because they can.

People choose what they want/like/can afford. I can't stand all this 'oh how stupid of them'

If you can afford it, do it.

Wow, for £200 candles, I rather expect their website to work on mobiles.

Madness

The diptyque website does. That's just the space nk who stock them.

I will be opening myself up to judging but shrug..... I am very excited about finally getting to open my Diptyque advent calendar next week.Grin

Yes candles are one of the best things about autumn/winter!

I bloody love a scented candle. Confession time - I have about 18 Cire Trudon ones that I swap around depending on mood (some of them are a few years old because I don't tend to go nuts on one fragrance). They are amazing quality, the scents are gorgeous and fill the room even when unlit. They're well worth imo as I like to have nice smells around me. I also love Baies, I don't have the big one but even so I can still smell it in the living room when it's not lit. A love the fragrance - also have the perfume version (L'Ombre dans l'eau), mmmmmm!

I also give to charity because amazingly it's possible to do both.

Sorry for the tease! Blush

Absolutely happy to share my candle adventure with you. I am so excited!!

A tip for next year, I think I bought it early October as soon as it went on sale. It was £250. I have just seen it on eBay (when I was looking for link to post) for £380!

I love candles, my favourite is Diptyque but also like Jo Malone, White Company, Penghaligons and Parks. I am burning L'occitaine jasmine and bergamot tonight.

A few weeks ago I found myself in the home of a vair wealthy lady. In her utility room she had about 20 Ditpyque candles stacked on a shelf as if they were bog rolls or something. It was awesome, i was so tempted to nick one but I resisted.

£380.

There's so much in my life I've been getting wrong. Especially, the stacked Diptyque.

I am very excited about the advent calendar for you, Blingy.

People are of course entitled to spend their own money on whatever they want. I don't like candles and have a few from ikea from about 10/15 years ago that I haven't used. If someone gave me an expensive candle I would honestly be a bit miffed that they had spent £40 or whatever and all I'd got was a fucking candle.

But then I spend hundreds of pounds to be taken out to sea and jump off the side of a boat wearing equipment so heavy I can barely stand up in it and a drysuit that cost the same as several of Jo Malone's most expensive candles. Each to their own.

What bugs me is the sneering 'everything else especially Yankee is cheap and nasty' from the Jo Malone/Diptythingy crowd. Even Yankee candles cost a lot of money for what they are (Ikea sell scented candles in a nice glass jar for less than a pound each that look to the untrained eye just like all the others that cost hundreds of times more).

I would really like to see a blind comparison where there is no branding to guide people into which are the naice ones to see if they can pick the cheap/expensive ones and to get them to think about whether the one that is £50 really is a hundred times better than the one that is 50p.

Tesco sell a pine scented candle for £1 - it smells amazing, just like Christmas tree (not loo cleaner like most 'pine' scented things...Xmas Hmm)

hello! So behind door number 2 was Duelle Diptyque perfume. It's an oriental spicy smell which is lovely. So i have been burning the candle from yesterday and wearing tonight's perfume while listening to Christmas music and wearing a Christmas jumper. I don't get out much! Xmas Grin

I don't think there is anything wrong with Yankee candles, I get given them all the time and enjoy them too. No candle snobbery here!

I now make my own after deciding that I wouldn't replace my Jo Malone candles.

A 1500g eco soya wax candle with cosmetic grade fragrance oils would cost £20-25 in materials plus a container.

Like the £££££ ones if you use 8-10% oils you would be extinguishing the flame after an hour.

My favourite fragrance is this, virtually identical to my old Jo Malone favourite.

I make a big four wick affair in a lovely old dish I bought in Italy years ago.

If I can do it anyone can. Haven't found anything quite like feu de bois yet though.

You literally melt the wax in the microwave on medium (I have only ever done this with eco soy wax) and add the fragrance, give it a stir and pour it into your container with the wicks already stuck down - so easy.

Come over to arts and crafts - there is a long running thread.

I have half read that thread a year ago and have 25kg of soy wax! Have found something similar to feu de bois but not quite. Have you got a link so I don't need to have to hunt?

Lovely day 2! You're going to have an awesome December!

FiveGoMad that's amazing! Well done! I was thinking of making some for Christmas pressies this year....what fragrances would you recommend? Essential oils?

Report
FiveGoMadInDorset · 02/12/2016 22:25

I get my fragrances from the candle shack. The lime basil and mandarin one is always compared favourably to Jo Malone, they have quirky mixtures as well

Wow sounds fab! And so easy! Shock Do you have the link?
