Smelly Candles and Smugness

I'm currently Christmas window shopping in nice places, with nice stuff. Everywhere I turn is a £££ candle. Bloody piles of the things in every shop, everywhere. Retailers must be preparing for a seriously chi-chi powercut. Or maybe a power-outtage combined with a sewage workers strike.

But who are the people who can literally set fire to £200 for a bit of a nice pong about the place?

AIBU to be so jealous confused?

Bloody hell, £200 for a candle? Insanity.

I reckon if you can sell a lump of wax for £200 then I'm going to get my ears syringed, I most have forty quid's worth in lugholes.

I've also got some special £5 notes you can set fire to and shove up your arse. It apparently has a purging effect and Angelina Jolie swears by it. Special deal for mumsnet users; £20 a pop or 4 for £100.

Oh that's good to hear glueandstick i have to say that i was a bit non plussed about the Vanille, you have made me excited now. Feu du Bois turned out to be a lovely woody smell. You were right very wintery!

I burned about half of it this evening but I am looking forward to Pomander which is the ultimate Christmas smell - like oranges with cinnamon. I am holding a Christmas drinks party on Saturday night and will have that burning downstairs. Can't wait!!

Then Vanille is a light feu de bois, or so I think. It isn't your average vanilla.

So glad you updated. Very much enjoying hearing about it!

Hello! sorry for not posting the last few days!

I am finally using my feu du bois Diptyque candle tonight and I agree that is a lovely smell although Ambre is hard to beat at this time of the year. It's so christmassy.

The last days I have had 2 more candles (Pomander, which I love and Vanille which I have never tried). Plus Trente Quatre perfume which is utterly gorgeous. It's a very sexy perfume but not too strong. It's a very grown up smell!

Never understood perfume candles. Smell of lovely person? I'll have lovely person instead. Smell of vanilla? Well, I'd rather have the baked goods that smell of it. Smell of flowers? Well, where are the pretty flowers then? Why not roast beef or freshly baked bread? I love roast beef and bread, but not the smell in the absence of it. Same for all other scents. I'm a philistine.

hello! I promised to come back and then didn't because my dcs went to bed before they could open door number 4! They do theirs and mine.Xmas Hmm

So behind door number 4 was L'ombre dans L'eau eau de pafrum which smells of roses. lovely floral smell. I sprayed some on this morning and there is still a lingering smell on the pulse points.

Behind today's door was another candle - feu du bois. I am actually still burning the Ambre candle, which is a lovely smell at this time of the year. I can't remember what feu du bois smells like as I don't think I have had that in yonks so will update you tomorrow!

Have a diptique Baies on the go right now! A new convert although would never spend 200 quid on one.
Re : yankee candle , my American friends have told me that they are really poor quality and not worth the hype. I personally find them a bit strong /overbearing.

I'm partial to whole nice smell flickering light plesant ness. We do it in the evening by the fire to create a nice bit of Zen before bed. Kids love it though they like to light the whole lot now so if I really th bought about it £200 is not a huge price to pay.

Yes you so should. Compare and contrast. It's market research after all.

Then when this topic rears its head (yet again) you'll be able to give a balanced opinion. You'll be doing it for the sake of mankind.

I love Jo Malone still as there is 'history' with the brand.

Do try Jo Loves- the stuff is lovely and just as fabulous.

For me it's just a case of taking some time getting used to 'new'

I'm terrible with change.

Have never had a Jo Malone candle but I heard on the radio she sold it and now has Jo Loves. Are the original ones still as rated by those in the know? Or should a newbie go for the newer company offerings?

Thanks...are they like essential oils? Or are they a sort of scent? Like perfume? I don't want to order anything online as I live in oz and things can take a long time even from within the country.
