AIBU?

Smelly Candles and Smugness

I'm currently Christmas window shopping in nice places, with nice stuff. Everywhere I turn is a £££ candle. Bloody piles of the things in every shop, everywhere. Retailers must be preparing for a seriously chi-chi powercut. Or maybe a power-outtage combined with a sewage workers strike.

But who are the people who can literally set fire to £200 for a bit of a nice pong about the place?

AIBU to be so jealous confused?

I love candles, and probably if you added up all the candles you buy in the year it would possibly be more than £200, so I think if they last as long as 18 months it's not really that ridiculous. I don't think spending money on candles is so bad, it's just a little treat

I pay very little for my candles because I make my own in the slow cooker

I nominate this the Best Use of a Slow Cooker ever posted on MN,

I love candles, but they don't love me. £2 or £2000 I can't have them burning. Nor incense. Nor room fragrance. No matter how pure the oil.

Blimey -who linked to the Jo malone? It's 290!

I'm shocked and I've got 2 of them!

Disclaimer - they were presents. I wouldn't buy one that size for myself.

One day I'm going to learn not to click on threads about bastard poncy candles it just raises my blood pressure.
My vapid and irritating sister is forever trying to put ambiance in my bloody bathroom a year or so ago after a thread on here I had to say NO NO NO bastard jo Malone huge ridiculous stinky things anymore after discovering how much the annoying things cost. Give her her dues she took away the jo Malone ones and replaced them for ones in interesting containers because apparently they were cost effective fripperies that wouldn't make me cross like the JM ones.

Now ive clicked on that bloody link, her assesment of the situation was wrong!

I use wax tarts, the company I buy from does jo Malone and lush dupes. Smell identical

I love a me smelly candle (I have a dog and a baby though so it covers up the smell of wet dog/dog farts/shitty nappies) but the price of these makes my eyes water! I thought I was a bit fancy cos I have a yankee candle and I am considering investing in another one.
I am not fancy.

Does this remind anyone of a 4 pack of Carlsberg?

Then again, it's probably the best candle in the world...

I love a nice candle, but 30 quid is at the upper level of what I would spend on one.
Ring candles are my absolute favourite.

For Christmas i've bought the little fir and spice candles from Diptique. Lit the girvone last night. Loved it.

Usually fig is my favourite.

The lime, basil and mandarin JM candle rocks! Gorgeous and zingy, lasts for ages.

And I love the beautiful soft quality of candle light, so much more gentle on the eyes than harsh artificial light. No good for reading of course, but just lovely to turn down the lights and put a few candles on the stone hearth in our living room and just gaze.

I run to tea lights only now.Had some nice ones in containers but can't get refills.I use them in the evening for the soft light. To freshen the house and for a harmonious fragrance story I open the windows!

A friend once bought me a candle with a wooden wick, it sounded like a crackling fire. It wasn't expensive, but it was a really nice smell and I liked the noise!

The 'Candle Poncery vs. Food Banks' debate has a smuggery all of its own.

It does. Why buy anything at all rather than give to food banks, if that's your attitude

I buy mine from the pound shop...i like the flickering flame on a candle...but not bothered about a scent.
