Smelly Candles and Smugness

I'm currently Christmas window shopping in nice places, with nice stuff. Everywhere I turn is a £££ candle. Bloody piles of the things in every shop, everywhere. Retailers must be preparing for a seriously chi-chi powercut. Or maybe a power-outtage combined with a sewage workers strike.

But who are the people who can literally set fire to £200 for a bit of a nice pong about the place?

AIBU to be so jealous confused?

£200 for a candle?! I've heard it all now!!

I hate candles they terrify me as I am suck a ditz and worry I'll burn the house down (am generally paranoid about fire - have an escape plan for the kids, double check anything likely to cause fire).

I buy multi coloured LED ones Grin

Crowdblundering · 22/11/2016 23:20

I don't suck a ditz Blush I am such a ditz.

Doman · 22/11/2016 23:25

I honestly think that anyone who spends £200 on a candle needs to take a long hard look at themselves.

Greengoddess12 · 22/11/2016 23:26

people getting their fragrance story so wrong

Please enlarge op. Because that's hilarious

ssd · 22/11/2016 23:27

why doman?

if they can afford it why not.

Greengoddess12 · 22/11/2016 23:29

I think spending £200 on a candle is insane and morally corrupt but each to own.

Food banks? Charity? Maybe

user1477282676 · 22/11/2016 23:29

I suppose SSD because it seems terribly wasteful. If I were rich enough to buy 200 pound candles, then I'd rather give that money to charity.

But then that's probably why I'm not rich.

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/11/2016 23:34

flossie do you have a link? Love wax melts and £10 a month is a bargain

I do love candles ESP Yankees tho happily buy the at £20ish

But would balk at £200!!!

Temporaryname137 · 22/11/2016 23:34

I love diptyque. But I always had the £50 ones, not the £200 ones! And they do last for AGES, and smell lovely even when not lit. I have to buy them as presents for people rather than for myself these days though as they aren't good for birds and we have a couple of budgies, major candle envy!

ifcatscouldtalk · 22/11/2016 23:37

crowdblundering best typo ever.Grin.
Maybe i'm currently too skint to see the allure of expensive candles. Saying that I don't think a lottery win would have me buying £200 candles but there is obviously a big market for it.

Crowdblundering · 22/11/2016 23:38

I too am now giggling at "fragrance story" Grin

Crowdblundering · 22/11/2016 23:39

I am thinking of all the gin I could buy with that £200 Grin

QueenOfTheNaps · 22/11/2016 23:41

Err it is possible to spend a lot of money on candles and to give to charity...
We give large weekly donations of food to our local food bank and also spend a bit of time with the local homeless charity. Especially at this time of year.. have recently spent more than a couple of posh candles worth on winter coats/gloves/hats to give out. We do this because we can see that we are very lucky to be in the position we are in but that doesn't mean we should feel guilty about spending money on frivolous things if we want to/can.

RortyCrankle · 22/11/2016 23:43

I pay very little for my candles because I make my own in the slow cooker (cost of soy wax and wicks etc). The added advantage is that they don't stink so much I can't breathe because I use just a few drops of essential oils for a light background scent.

Crowdblundering · 22/11/2016 23:44

I don't feel I have the right to judge anyone on what they spend their own money on - I spend a ridiculous amount on shoes.

I just wouldn't personally choose to
Spend £200 on a candle.

BreconBeBuggered · 22/11/2016 23:51

Have to admit I have a couple of those £200 jobbies Blush

Perhaps you have to be born north of the border to snigger in a juvenile fashion at this. And if I saw a £200 candle in a shop, not even a jobbie, I'd laugh hysterically and invite bystanders to join in.

Twofurrycats · 22/11/2016 23:54

I love a good scented candle but the prices in the scented candle dept of Selfridge's sent me running. How much ffs! For a candle. I love Jo Malone perfume - small bottle on way through airport. Still sulking that they don't do the black bottle ones in the smaller size

Greengoddess12 · 22/11/2016 23:57

queen absolutley you have the right but as a midland bird Brecon Grin I judge you as gullible.

Still your money and your choice.

itsalldyingout · 22/11/2016 23:57

I'd love some of your candles (or at least the recipe), Rorty. I can't breathe walking past the candle aisle in shops these days, but I do miss the ambiance and a light waft of scent.

OverTheGardenGate · 22/11/2016 23:58

I love this thread. My husband and kids think I'm nuts for splashing out on half price Yankee tea-lights. I have had the big jars, but the last one
I had, I left burning in the lavatory and the wick got too long and it smoked the whole room out, leaving black carbon smudges all over the pristine white paintwork. So now I have to stick to tea lights.

I want to see the look on his face when I tell him I'm going to purchase a £200 candle. The future looks bleak. Or do I mean black?

I am very much a candle person. I just so love smelly candles.

Also put stuff in the local food bank though. They wouldn't want candles.
And do volunteer work at my local charity shop. I'm a good person, right?
Notwithstanding the amount of hard cash I spend on smelly candles.
OK, now I've said enough. Don't judge me.

Crowdblundering · 23/11/2016 00:01

Do you also cook food in the slow cooker Confused

goingmadinthecountry · 23/11/2016 00:02

People can indeed give loads to charity and have nice stuff. They don't deserve judgement. I have a Jo Malone candle in my bathroom that is doing well after a year because I rarely light it - love it when I do. It was a gift. If you love something and can comfortably afford it then buy it. Never be judged by others.

OverTheGardenGate · 23/11/2016 00:03

Me? I don't own a slow cooker. I put stuff in the Aga.

Oh hang on. You weren't talking to me!

Grilledaubergines · 23/11/2016 00:05

I'm a candle lighter/lover and usually burn one in the living room during the evening. I couldn't ever justify a £200 one (but if my disposable income were greater then I could!) but possibly the small jo malone one which is about £50 ish for a special treat. I look in TK Maxx for a bargain as sometimes they have Neom though usually the less popular fragrances so it's a case of rifling through the shelves.
