Smelly Candles and Smugness

I'm currently Christmas window shopping in nice places, with nice stuff. Everywhere I turn is a £££ candle. Bloody piles of the things in every shop, everywhere. Retailers must be preparing for a seriously chi-chi powercut. Or maybe a power-outtage combined with a sewage workers strike.

But who are the people who can literally set fire to £200 for a bit of a nice pong about the place?

AIBU to be so jealous confused?

I really don't get why people get so judgy on how others spend their money. As I said upthread I'd never spend £200 on a candle but I wouldn't judge others who do.
Someone at work once scoffed at me when I got all chuffed army £15 Yankee candle saying it was a waste of money.... Didn't appreciate when I pointed out he spends that amount in 2 days on fags.

JackShit · 23/11/2016 09:21

£200 on a candle does rather emphasise the earnings gap in this country.

MorrisZapp · 23/11/2016 09:32

Love the woodwick link. Ooh payday soon!

hazeyjane · 23/11/2016 09:48

Due to house fire paranoia and asthma we just do fairy lights and LED tea lights.

If you pay me £200, I could do an amazing Febreze Flame Thrower, a spectacular arc of flaming scent (please make sure all materials in surrounding area are flame retardant).

Herecomedanotherone · 23/11/2016 09:50

Childish I know, but I'm chuckling like a good'n reading about the stinky blackcurrant bush. Possibly because I describe my home-dyed out of a boxhaircolour as blackcurrant coloured.

Anyway, I have recently discovered Shearer candles, wonderful scents, especially the Cinnamon Spice. I've only had the tealights so far and even that scents the whole house. Am going to treat myself to a bigger one for Christmas.

BusterGonad · 23/11/2016 10:03

People can chose to spend their money how they like, I was only joking earlier with my more money than....comment. If they get enjoyment out of it and they have the cash why not? I don't have the cash, and if I did I'd rather buy a coat and/ or a bike for my son, but if you can afford to do all of that then why not a £200 candle.

SquirrelPaws · 23/11/2016 10:04

I do love a smelly candle, but I squeak at paying a tenner for one. My favourite is the Yankee Halloween one, the witchy one with patchouli. I get fed up with them if they last too long though, so lasting a year wouldn't be a selling point for me. I want a new smell after a couple of weeks or so (says the woman who has worn the same perfume for 12 years.)

BusterGonad · 23/11/2016 10:10

I do enjoy a smelly candle, I bought one called 'Amber' it was lovely, smelt a bit like a gorgeous aftershave. I only pay about a tenner though, but I also love a joss stick too.

alizondevice · 23/11/2016 10:11

I'm so old fashioned, I'm infuriated that I can't find basic taper dinner candles in most shops anymore. It's all the expensive scented candles in jars.

ShowMePotatoSalad · 23/11/2016 10:18

I absolutely love scented candles but the stuff in the press last year about them freaked me out so I don't burn them now.

ConferencePear · 23/11/2016 10:29

I'm with Needsasockamnesty I simply don't get it. If I visit someone who has a smelly house I just leave as soon as I politely can.
Of course everyone can spend their money on what they want, but the rest of us aren't obliged to like it.

BoyFromTheBigBadCity · 23/11/2016 10:46

I love candles and joss sticks. If I could afford it I would have the expensive ones. Currently got a saffron honey joss stick on, makes up for the weather a bit.

NoSunNoMoon · 23/11/2016 11:22

Huge fan of Woodwick Candles.

BuggerLumpsAnnoyed · 23/11/2016 11:26

I fucking hate candles

kungfupannda · 23/11/2016 12:31

I make my own. You can get a really good, strong scent for a fraction of the cost.

hollinhurst84 · 23/11/2016 12:59

Piglet - here http://www.candlewick-greens.appspot.com/readytoship.html

she restocks every Friday at 7pm, and I use 1/4 of a wax tart in a burner to scent an open plan living room/kitchen, they're strong!

hollinhurst84 · 23/11/2016 13:00

Oops, posted too soon
Click perfume shop for dupes, and if you click the i next to any scent you select it gives you a description

Eolian · 23/11/2016 13:04

I really like candles, as much for the cosy light as the scent, but never buy them as I can't afford expensive ones. I was thinking of asking for some for Christmas. So are there any brands have nice natural but long-lasting scent but don't cost the earth?

NeedsAsockamnesty · 23/11/2016 13:12

Don't get me wrong I like candles and I like wax melts and things that make the house smell nice. It's just to me the very expensive ones seam gratuitous and not something I wish to spend my money on.

I used to rather like candlewick greens melts untill her customer service changed from helpful to IMO shite and at about the same time the quality of her product dropped from decent with long lasting smells to worse than Yankee melts amd all abit meh. I figured she may have someone else making them.

Wonky melts and melt it and Isle of Skye in comparasion are much better and the smells are more long lasting

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 23/11/2016 13:14

Thank you hollinhurst Smile

PutDownThatLaptop · 23/11/2016 13:23

Good grief. I have lived this long without realising that there are candles that cost £200.
I recently bought a medium sized Ralph Lauren candle from TK Maxx for £25 as a Christmas gift for my friend and at that price I very nearly cried on the way to the till.

LadyPeterWimsey · 23/11/2016 13:51

Clicked on the OP's link and recognised one of the candles I was given a few years ago by a rich distant relative - which I now realise was Diptyque and must have cost AT LEAST £100. Shock

I didn't like the smell, and the colour didn't match any of my rooms anyway so I never used it. I might have given it away in fact.

But now, I'm going to my junk room to check, and if I haven't it's going straight on eBay. Grin

RortyCrankle · 23/11/2016 14:23

itsalldyingout
I'd love some of your candles (or at least the recipe), Rorty. I can't breathe walking past the candle aisle in shops these days, but I do miss the ambiance and a light waft of scent.

Sadly I can't quite squeeze my candles down the comp wires but these are the instructions I used: bonzaiaphrodite.com/2009/12/homemade-holidays-crock-pot-candles/ Really easy - to be honest, if I can make them anyone can Smile Oh and I ordered soy wax and coloured wax and wicks etc from Amazon.

CouldIHaveIt
I nominate this the Best Use of a Slow Cooker ever posted on MN,

Well it was either using it for something like this or chucking it in the bin - I really dislike slow cooked food.

ssd · 23/11/2016 19:46

I love candles and have a few round the house ( and I pay up to £3.50 for them Shock)

but dh recently told me my newish one, from matalan, smells like toilet duck....not the fragranec story I was after Grin

RJnomore1 · 23/11/2016 20:07

Shearer candles are VERY good value for money. In fact the tealights burn longer thN the partylite ones.
