AIBU?

Smelly Candles and Smugness

I'm currently Christmas window shopping in nice places, with nice stuff. Everywhere I turn is a £££ candle. Bloody piles of the things in every shop, everywhere. Retailers must be preparing for a seriously chi-chi powercut. Or maybe a power-outtage combined with a sewage workers strike.

But who are the people who can literally set fire to £200 for a bit of a nice pong about the place?

AIBU to be so jealous confused?

I have a couple of these - they last ages and the smell is gorgeous.

I favour tubereuse but also like figurier.

Lighting my Diptyque Feu de Bois candle once autumn sets in makes me deeply happy!

I buy the £55 ones though. They last around 6 months, although I don't light them religiously every day, but most days.

'and that's less than £20!'

So, true. A steal when you think what we could go for.

I'll see if I can adjust to the Home Fragrance alternative economy. Probably won't be that onerous

Won't mention here then that I have a "Glade" candle burning, how common of me.

I wonder how hard it is to make a candle that smells like a really posh one? Can't be that hard. It's just essential oils isn't it?

See this is how I know I'm dead common. Because I don't know a single person who would ever dream of spending a lot of money on candles.

I occasionally but the Yankee candles from asda but only when they're on special offer, I'm not spending £10 on a candle never mind £200Grin

I use the Price's open windows ones. About 6 quid a candle and lasts me on average 6 months and rids cooking smells very quickly but no over powering scent

I love candles too, lighting a candle signifies "mummy's quiet time" wine/vodka time
Though I couldn't afford any of those post ones Envy

I used to like Yankee candle till I discovered Lily-flame. They're candles in a lovely tin, with a huge range and gorgeous scents. My absolute favourite is Snow Fall, which I was reliably informed smells like Jean Paul Gaultier Men. It actually does.
To me, it really smells like snow. If you can imagine.
Best place to buy is Casa Candles website. They stock loads of ranges and the whole range, as well as lovely customised gift boxes.
wanders off to spend DC's Xmas present money on candles

Should have said that lily-flame are about £7.50 or so. Good, strong scents.

And I do just find so many people can get their fragrance story so wrong, don't you?

I'm allergic to most, expensive or not.

My friend burns Jo Malone - but not when I'm around. I have to give her 24 hours notice before I call in to give her a chance to make sure she's aired the house or I get a reaction. I'm the same with air fresheners or reeds.

I'm glad to see most have an allergy warning on them these days. I don't think I'd use any kind of scented product around children these days, given my history and the warnings on them (my daughter doesn't seem to have been affected - yet - though I was older than she is now when my allergy developed).

Ahhh, this takes me back...

My grandparents were poor and actually used candles instead of that there expensive electrickery (catweazel anyone?) - and I'm not kidding.

They used candles in the 40s/50s to save money/energy etc. and they would have thought you were hard up using candles nowadays.

Plus - we always had power cuts in the 70s so candles were so normal they were the most boring thing ever - people would have laughed in the face of a £200 scented candle!

I've decided I'm going to make my own candles. Buy some nice fragrance oils, wicks and soya flakes. Will be able to make fab candles for less than £200!

I feel that the fragrance story has to flow... with a beginning and an end and a good tale in between (guffaw)

shirleybean I love lily flame, my favourite is fairy dust, it reminds me of sweets - they do a hand wash in it now, yum!

Cannibals I must say, I"m tempted to do this...I could give them as Christmas presents! We have a lot of mates who we give token gifts too...the done thing is a small pressie like chocolate and a nice Christmas tree ornament....or homemade treats. I'm going to look up instructions!

I make my own candles and had absolutely no idea that buying them could get so expensive. I also make wax melts which I put on a little saucer on the mantelpiece when the fire is lit- it scents to house nicely without any extra faff.

Expensive candles aren't even on the list of stuff I care about though. It isn't likely that anyone is not feeding their kids to buy massive lumps of wax, so it's nobody's business but their own what people pay for their candles.
