I'm just horrified at the idea of him winning: he has somehow garnered a lot of support, tho unfortunately, some of his supporters seem completely batshit.

I was discussing this with my teens. Even they (provincial Italians) are gobsmacked that he's even got this far. Then one of them pointed out that the US has New York on one end, and California on the other, and a whole lot of characters-as-described-in-horror by Bill Bryson in the middle. I am in a state of mild panic about this. The EU referendum has rather robbed me of hope and optimism. I just can't tell myself it is going to be ok.

The whole campaign has left in me in despair. The electorate has the choice of a 'madman' or a 'liar.' You would have thought with just over 320 million people they could have done better with the candidates. Clinton is marginally the better prospect.

Unfortunately Seeking, that kind of sweeping, insulting statement is wrong. His supporters do have some imbeciles among them but there are others who are intelligent, thoughtful and genuinely think Clinton is worse. The Americans have had years of hearing stuff about the Clintons that we haven't so some see her as the worst option.

We have quite a few American friends; some are voting Clinton happily, some grudgingly, some are voting Trump to keep Clinton out and hating themselves while doing it and two have taken the option of writing in their own candidate which you can do in some states

I don't get this "marginally " - Clinton is in a completely different league to Trump whether you like her or not.

I can't get my head around the outright lies he tells that no one calls him on and the viciousness of his attacks on his opponent and the 'establishment'. To say the voting system is rigged is breathtaking.

its no longer about who is the best candidate with good policies etc it's become a choice for who will do the least damage to the country

The general consensus amongst our friends is that if Trump somehow gets elected we will be absolutely astounded if he isn't ' assassinated ' but by the cia or something. Although maybe that's just because we are really struggling with the idea anyone could let it happen.

I'm very worried about the rise of
populism, demagogues and the far right, on both sides of the Atlantic (and the usual craziness in e.g. Russia).

If we add Daily Mail headlines into the mix, we've got a 1930s-style nightmare appearing before our very eyes.

Lots of people asked what the hell the Brexit vote had to do with Barack Obama when he chimed in on it. I actually think his intervention prompted quite a few to vote leave.

So quite what right we have to be calling the Americans stupid if they vote Trump I don't know. All we hear here is snippets. The only people qualified to make that choice are the US electorate.

So he'd rather have Trump with his finger on the button (a button that is never going to go away, you can't unlearn stuff, and while North Korea are nuking up, the US is hardly going to not, is it?) than Clinton?

Anyone who can't see the connection between the rise in hatred and bigotry on a developed-world scale, and the advent of things like a Brexit win (when the campaign was fought on one spurious argument alone-immigration) and a situation where a tax dodging abuser like DT even gets anywhere near a political leadership contest is as, er, daft as the people who will no doubt have to move their fingers along the lines in the ballot booth on Tuesday.

And that is a lot more scary than Clinton having the red button by her bed.
