An acquaintance on Facebook posted a picture of her toddler son with the caption 'jack was howling on the school run today and people were commenting saying oh poor him, well no quite frankly he's just being a twat and I'm allowed to say that because he's my child' she then posted an update later ' received some lovely messages from my rant this morning some people are afraid to state the truth but I'm not if you've never referred to your toddler as a twat then you are a liar' I have since unfriended her as I think referring to a child as a twat is disgusting and I can't see the funny side of it to be honest. Have I just lost my sense of humour?

Yeah it's in poor taste. Not something i'd post on facebook. Not something I could get more bothered about than a passing raised eyebrow though tbh.

No yanbu but I thibk it's one of those issues that divides people. I wouldnt ever call my child that no mater how angry I get - it's not a case of stopping myself, I just don't get the urge.

I wouldn't have the balls to say it on fb or in real life but that's what's I'm thinking in my head when my toddlers were being utter nightmares

No at many points in their lives my kids have most definitely been assholes. She has a point.

I don't agree with the choice of word, but I understand the sentiment

I regularly tell my DH that one or both of my DS have been "dicks". It's very tongue in cheek....and true! But I wouldn't say it on fb and obviously would never say it in earshot of my kids. I think maybe it's just her sense of humour?

I called my ds a little earwig once (Mr Wormwood - Matilda) he actually likes it!!
We found an earwig in the kitchen the other night and he was gutted he now wasn't the only earwig in the family!!

I don't think it's disgusting, I would say it to my friends but to post it on facebook is a bit odd.

Would you have the same reaction if she has said "brat" instead? If not then yabu.

Sometimes kids act up in order to test boundaries and it is frustrating for the adults around them to deal with. Venting that frustration is healthy and as long as it's not said to the child's face and they are happy and well looked after it really doesn't matter.

Some people really do use Facebook as a brain dump, as though every dull little thought they have has to be committed to online posterity.

I'm sure Jack can be a little twat but his mother is a bit of a twat to say as much on Facebook.

Olenna that's exactly it, why not just replace twat with something like monkey? It's the choice of word I find extremely distasteful.

Twat is a term of endearment in our house

Not a nice word at all to describe your dc. Twat to me is up there with cunt, or dick and I wouldn't use either of those words about my kids. I've said brat once or twice but not something I would use often.

It's very mild where I live certainly not on a parr with cunt.

Same as DameDiazepam it's seen as pretty mild here. Definitely not on a par with the word cunt.

I have never, and would never, call my child a twat!

I have called them monkeys, buggers, toe rags, pains-in-the-bum, and wasters - I would never use twat, cunt, dick, etc about my children (or most children, though I can think of one spoiled, entitled little bumble who I'm tempted to make an exception for)

You see I would NEVER call my child a bugger, awful word and surprised it's still seen as mild.

i say my son is an arse.... it's supposed to be taken lightly. Like - he's an arse but I would jump infront of a bus to save him. I think it's ok. she was probably having an awful day. i am sure the child is very much loved. she doesnt MEAN it.

Swearing divides people I think, I was brought up in a potty mouth house and I am still the same in my own household- definetly called my kids all the names in the book although this is to DP no where near them and I hate social media so scarcely use it except to keep in touch with a few people
