Waiting to 6pm and no later for dinner together

My husband is self-employed. He gets a bit huffy as he likes us all to eat together, but I say we usually wait till 6pm is and go ahead with the children's dinner as they get a bit hungry by then. I usually have something with them.

YANBU and there has to be a cut of time somewhere.

Personally, I feed the dc and then eat with dh when he gets back. The way I see it, the dc have company at the table in each other so I wait iyswim.

Totally dependant on the kids ages. If under 9 go ahead if over they can wait I would say.

I have a 3 yo dc and 6pm is a pretty good week night cut off. We sometimes make t a touch later if it isn't bath night but I have only one to sort out

6pm is fine unless you live in Downton Abbey.

My teenagers need to eat by 6pm. When they were younger that would be the absolute latest I'd leave it.

I feed the kids earlier and then eat with dh later. Although my dc have just finished eating and dh isn't even on his way home yet

Our children eat at 7 - 8pm.

I can't get my head round dinner at 6 or earlier. Even 7ish I struggle with, but did it for the dc when they were babies.

I would have chewed my arm off if I had to wait till 6 to eat. Do you all have afternoon snacks or something to tide you over?

Why can't you eat with dh and the kids eat earlier ? It's lonely eating by yourself every night

Good god what time do your children go to bed if they sat that late?
Small children I.e under five should be eating early so they can go to bed.
Bigger children can cope with later meals, but I think six pm is a good time.

I eat at noonish and 9pm on a typical day. I might have a little snack at about 5 o clock with my cup of tea.

I don't think 6pm is early at all. I don't think it's fair to expect you all to wait for him on a school night either. I have to get the kids fed by 6pm or I can never get them to bed at a decent time as the evening stuff seems to take ages.

I still feed the dc at 5ish! They are both starving after school. At weekends we eat later - but then we often have lunch later.

Depends how old they are/when they like to eat/when you want them to go to bed. No point waiting to eat all together if they're going to be grumpy and tired during tea.

No bibbity, not unless you choose to make it one.

My dd has to be up at 7am so needs to be in bed about 7-8pm. Dinner at 6pm then bath then stories means she is reliably asleep by 8pm.

If we can't all be ready to eat at this time then dd eats her dinner and whichever one of us is around has a cup of tea with her for company.

I love it when we all eat together but it doesn't always work for us

6pm is a bit early.

My children are 5 and 6. They eat with us between 7-8pm and have done since tiny.

We are rarely even home by 6pm

If you want them ready, can't you do bath and pajamas for the children at 6, and then all eat at 7-7.30pm then bed after?

DH waits till 6.30 unless they've got a club to go to (or they're really hungry) and after that I get my dinner on a tray.

I wouldn't expect them to wait for me.

YANBU . Laughing at some people saying 6pm is early! My kids would eat each other if we ate at that time lol

How is it a class thing?!

Our DC need to eat by 6pm to minimise bedwetting. It means we normally eat separately in the week. The YABU bit is that neither of you seem able to figure out a compromise.
