dd [21] objects to £50 pw rent

title says it all, low-ish income house hold. dh reduced hours [26 per wk], i have medical problems so limited for work, ds on j.s.a, two in college, one in school. ddhi college full time, but works 14 -16 hours at weekends, takes home about £600 pm. self inflicted debt, wastes money on stupid things i.e £20 bet Shock that her mate would throw up after chugging a milk shake, dd lost 'but it was a laugh' Hmm.
now she has told dm that she is 'paying £50 a week to share a box room with her dsis [3 bed house] and it's not fair because she's not at home much ! dm has just me this on the land line dd uses [dropped her phone - broken].
aibu, considering we cannot do with any reduction in income.

Let her bitch away. She doesn't like it, she can move out. I wouldn't give it a second thought. £50/week is more than fair.

I don't know, it does seem quite a lot given she's sharing a box room tbh. She obviously works hard if she does all those hours on top of full time college work. I get that she'd pay a lot more if she was living in her own flat but, not in a crowded house!

Have I got this right? A child of the family, full-time student, is expected to pay rent from her income from her part-time job? And she shares a small room for that?
She wouldn't be able to get accommodation for that amount anywhere else, I shouldn't have thought.
But go easy on her. She's very young.

£2,600 a year for half a box room is pretty crappy I must admit. What do your other children (of working age) pay?

stephen, her sibs [db's] are usually in their room gaming, she is often in the lounge on her own.

It does seem a lot to share a box room. She should pay something just maybe not that much.

£35 p/w seems fairer.

You could flip it around, say ok, stopping in your room is free but you need to pay for all your meals, and a contribution to Internet/hot water (whatever really), it will help teach her about utilities and she can't moan about the room. And perhaps offer a small reduction (£40 per week sounds a bit fairer)

If you need the money you need the money. If she wants to stay she'll have to pay up and help the family out.

Is it JUST rent? Or is it more like board and lodging and includes meals?

If just rent, I think that is unfair, for half a box room. If she moved out, you could hardly replace her after all!

It includes full board.

And they cannot afford to keep her.

So she's free to move out.

£200 leaves her £400 to spend.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a full room of your own in a flatshare and all bills for £200 in most major UK cities.

For food accommodation and utilities, I think 50 is very reasonable. How much would a room in a shared house near you cost per month?

I think it's fairly reasonable; assuming it's for food/ internet/ bills. It's not really just the use of half a boxroom it's a sitting room/ kitchen/ bathroom and laundry facilities.

Roughly what's your weekly foodbill?

The bet with her friend would have upset me immensely because its clear that witnessing the hard work of her parents to provide for the family hasn't resonated.

OP, £50 pw for food, lodging, bills etc. is fair and if I am honest, far better for the family to have it then for your DD to waste it on silly bets.

time she has all home comforts, no extra bills other than her debts, in fact she was the one who suggested that amount to start with ! no other dc working yet all in education except one on j.s.a.

She isn't paying to just use the box room. Presumably she uses the rest of the house too just like everyone else.

I think it's a "free market" and if she can find a better deal elsewhere she should take it. If this is the best deal she can get for the money then that proves it to her

Let her vote with her feet, either way. She is 21 not 16/17

£50pw for all food, heating, water, internet and a safe place to sleep is a bloody bargain!

If she doesn't like it she can move out and into the real world where landlords won't be wringing their hands at her bleatings of unfairness.
