That's what DH just said, I thought everyone knew, it always comes up on threads about best cover version ever.

ElsaAintAsColdAsMe · 06/11/2015 23:18

Nope, some woman in the 60s sang it I think.

They did the best version though, it's one of my all time favourite songs.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 06/11/2015 23:18

Well maybe not everyone, but did think it was generally known.

Jaxsbum · 06/11/2015 23:19

and Omg hand bags and glad rags.....is a cover, Rod didn't do it first

I only found this out recently.

TiredButFineODFOJ · 06/11/2015 23:20

Not often that the original and the cover are both amazing. Rihanna's sampling of it on SOS - not so good

Tiggeryoubastard · 06/11/2015 23:20

They did lots of motown covers when playing live. And very well they did them, in their inimitable style. Probably one of the best bands I've ever seen live. And Marc Almond is a lovely chap.

NinaSimoneful · 06/11/2015 23:20

Yabu, Tainted Love has been covered many times. Even Rihanna has sampled it.

Devora · 06/11/2015 23:22

Northern soul classic, wasn't it?

Tiggeryoubastard · 06/11/2015 23:22

This and Siouxie And The Banshees version of Dear Prudence have to be two of the best covers ever.

MaisieDotes · 06/11/2015 23:22

I didn't know for ages that one of the songs on David Gray's White Ladder was originally a Soft Cell song.

Tiggeryoubastard · 06/11/2015 23:23

Oh god, this was an amazing cover too, but that prat Gates ruined it for me.

Tiggeryoubastard · 06/11/2015 23:25

Yes it was, Devora, I said Motown as I thought that's more recognisable to people.

Tartyflette · 06/11/2015 23:27

Chris Farley did handbags and gladrags first (and best)

Tiggeryoubastard · 06/11/2015 23:29

Sorry, suspicious mind by Fine Young Cannibals (with the still absolutely gorgeous Roland Gift) is up there, too. sigh, Roland

NetballHoop · 06/11/2015 23:31

What I found more amazing was that Mark Almond is still alive. I assumed he'd died years ago.

ADishBestEatenCold · 06/11/2015 23:31

Gloria Jones (Marc Bolan's girlfriend) was the original artist, though she didn't write it.

Losten to her sign it. It's superb and (IMO) if you like Soft Cell's version, you'll love Gloria's.

WhataRacquet · 06/11/2015 23:36

Sinead was gorgeous.

Sparklingbrook · 06/11/2015 23:37

Why would you assume he was dead Netball? Confused

I loved that one

I have three versions of tainted love on my phone (Soft Cell, Marilyn Manson and Gloria Jones) the latter is the best imho. I get rather into the clapping and dancing Blush

JoffreyBaratheon · 06/11/2015 23:40

I loved David Gray but I don't think his version of 'Say Hello, Wave Goodbye' came close to Marc Almond's. Maybe it's a case of preferring the version you heard first? But Gray seemed to sanitise the song, somehow.

Tiggeryoubastard · 06/11/2015 23:42

Exh said 'nothing compares 2 U' used to make him and the other married blokes so homesick during the first Gulf War.

JamesBlonde1 · 06/11/2015 23:42

The Gloria Jones version is a northern soul classic - still played at many northern soul nights in "the north". To those who don't know there's special dancing to northern soul music. My parents are a whizz at it.
