Tainted Love?? I thought it was their song

And, of course, Jeff Buckley recorded Hallelujah too. Grin far better

ComposHatComesBack · 08/11/2015 00:11

The Czars (John Grant's band before he went solo) did a version of Song to the Siren on their cover record . They also do a cracking version of Patdy Cline's 'If you've got leaving on your mind.' Yo La Tengo, Cat Power and Camera Obscura do very good cover versions too.

ComposHatComesBack · 08/11/2015 00:12

Not of song to the Siren but in general.

katemiddletonsothermum · 08/11/2015 00:18

Personally, I think Geri Halliwell's cover of "It's Raining Men" is the best thing ever. Certainly beats the original.

Said no one ever.

I was going to say "why on earth would anyone assume Marc Almond was dead? He's only in his late 50s and hasn't been ill!" Then I remembered his serious motorbike crash about 10 years ago. He was in a coma for a while. Thankfully he's fine now.

EachandEveryone · 08/11/2015 01:22

They were my favourite band of the 80's. I was a miserable teenager.

HemanOrSheRa · 08/11/2015 01:46

Jeff Buckley's recording of Hallelujah is spine tingling and beautiful.

Destinysdaughter · 08/11/2015 01:47

If you like Soft Cell's Say Hello, you've got to listen to the 12" version, it's got the most beautiful introduction...!

And Alexandra Burke

Now now - there is no call for that soft of language here.

mammmamia · 08/11/2015 09:26

I started a thread like this a while ago about covers that are better than the original

Agree with lots of the above. Haven't heard the Gloria Jones version so will go and look that up now

I love the Pet shop boys version of Always on my mind. Much better than Elvis.
By the way - northern soul is not the same thing as Motown!

VenusInFauxFurs · 08/11/2015 09:27

I only found out last year that Madness's "It must be love" was a cover of a Labi Siffre song.

And I thought for years that Monster Mash was a Bonzo Dog Band original.

SplatterMustard · 08/11/2015 10:39

I didn't know that it was a cover either, it's one of those things. A work colleague recently said that she didn't know that Paul Young didn't write Love will tear us apart.

LeSquigh · 08/11/2015 11:42

The Zutons "Valerie" is SO much better than Winehouse. It should never have been covered...

vienna1981 · 08/11/2015 11:44

The original Monster Mash was by Bobby Boris Picket And The Crypt Kickers.

partialderivative · 08/11/2015 11:54

David Bowie released a fantastic album of covers back in the 70's, including one of my all time favourites, 'Sorrow'

I cannot decide which version of 'Shes Not There' I prefer, both The Zombies and Santana are brilliant, but for different reasons.

Not sure I have any pop trivia to add. The drummer from Tom Robinson Band went to my primary school. But I doubt if many on here have heard of them.

ComposHatComesBack · 08/11/2015 12:32

2468 Motorway?
Glad to be Gay?

Both really well known.

vienna1981 · 08/11/2015 12:34

Wasn't Dolphin Taylor the TR Band drummer ?

partialderivative · 08/11/2015 12:56

We knew him as Brian Taylor

ComposHatComesBack · 08/11/2015 13:02

It was only recently that I realised that L.O.V.E. Love by Orange Juice was a cover of an Al Green song.

vienna1981 · 08/11/2015 14:16

If I had to choose my name I'd go for Dolphin over Brian any day Wink.

susiella · 08/11/2015 16:13

RemusLupin check out Barrett Strong's version of The best things in life are free. Blows the other 2 out of the water.

DoctorTwo · 08/11/2015 16:54

I was surprised to learn that was originally by the Bee Gees not Faith No More.

JessieMcJessie · 08/11/2015 18:11

To those who have mentioned "Respect", think about the lyrics - in the mouth of Otis Redding, i.e from the male perspective, it's nasty and bullying. Aretha, in the other hand, made it a feminist anthem.

ijustwanttobeme · 08/11/2015 19:34

I love Everything but the Girls cover of I don't wanna talk about it. Far better than the Rod Stewart original.

Am a die hard Duranie, but even I balked at the white lines cover they did - although it has grown on me over the years.
