Behooven · 07/11/2015 00:34

Ooh, loved loved, Tainted Love!
I had an extended 12 inch single, it segued into another big hit, Where did our love go.

Feckin brilliant.

Bambambini · 07/11/2015 00:38

Love Tainted Love , only song to always get me on the dance floor.

I love David Gray's version of Say Hello, Wave Goodbye.

Tiggeryoubastard · 07/11/2015 00:39

Still have that somewhere in storage, Behooven.

Behooven · 07/11/2015 00:53

Tiggery I'm mad at myself! during a massive clear out (post divorce) I threw mine out along with loads of other fine 80s classic vinyl.

GinBunny · 07/11/2015 01:02

Listening to Say Hello Wave Goodbye by David Grey now on You Tube, misses the angst of Soft Cell but it's still a really beautiful version. Glad I read this thread just to hear it Thanks

DingleberryDip · 07/11/2015 01:08

I love Nina Simone's cover of Mr Bojangles. It's so mellow yet it's got such yearning.

didyouwritethe · 07/11/2015 01:11

Personally I always get Marc Almond and Marc Bolan mixed up. This may account for the muddle about Marc Almond being dead - Marc Bolan died in a car crash iirc.

ADishBestEatenCold · 07/11/2015 01:38

Marc Bolan died in a car crash iirc

Sadly, he did ... but to mix you up even more, didyouwritethe, the car he died in was driven by Gloria Jones, the artist who recorded Tainted Love (ahead of Marc Almond),

Destinysdaughter · 07/11/2015 01:54

I much prefer Eva Cassidy's 'Fields of Gold' to Sting's, even though he wrote it!

allnewredfairy · 07/11/2015 08:26

I was surprised to find that Happy Mondays Step on was a cover as was Blondies Denis Denis.
The original Step On is lovely and clip cloppy (genuine music terminology there)

MaisieDotes · 07/11/2015 08:36

Step On is a cover Shock

ARich

You are the only person I have found outside my social group to have even heard of The Afghan Whigs. Thank you.

SaucyJack · 07/11/2015 08:43

Speaking of Limp Bizkit.... I do think their version of George Michael's Faith is faaaar better than the original.

Also think Suede's cover of Brass In Pocket is the definitive version.

SaucyJack · 07/11/2015 08:43

Yes, I grew up in the 90s.

PolaDeVeboise · 07/11/2015 08:53

How VERY dare you Saucy. That is all.

MsMargaretCarter · 07/11/2015 09:01

Oh Saucy - you are so right re: Brass in Pocket. It's gorgeous.

paulapantsdown · 07/11/2015 09:17

To go the other way, Dolly Partons original of I Will Always Love You is a millions times more beautiful than Whitneys cover.

JimmyGreavesMoustache · 07/11/2015 09:26

I can never decide if I prefer the Soft Cell version or Gloria Jones original - i think the original shades it but only just.

I only recently heard Otis Redding's original version of Respect - always thought it was Aretha's.

My favourite covers are Johnny Cash's Hurt, and Scissor Sisters' Comfortably Numb. To DH's horror I have no time for NIN or Pink Floyd, but love both of those versions.

BrianCoxReborn · 07/11/2015 09:34

I adore David Gray's version of SHWG. I never realised it was a cover until I saw Marc Almond perform it and commented to my older, wiser friend "well, he's bollocksed that up!" I thought she was going to kill me Grin

As for Tainted Love, I didn't know it was a cover! I love the Marilyn Manson version though.

BrianCoxReborn · 07/11/2015 09:35

Paula agree. Dolly's version (and knowing the story behind the song) makes it all the more beautiful. She seems to sing it with genuine emotion as well.

Bambambini · 07/11/2015 09:51

Dolly over whitney's version every single time - it's beautiful. Gid, the Bodyguard was awful though.

LBOCS2 · 07/11/2015 09:54

I love every cover that Marilyn Manson does, he really has a 'feel' for doing other people's songs. My favourite is 'You're so vain' which I think Johnny Depp played the guitar for...

Behooven · 07/11/2015 10:31

Dolly wrote it didn't she? She is a much underrated song writer.

ComposHatComesBack · 07/11/2015 10:51

Gloria Jones recorded too different versions one in the mid 60s and another to cash in on its revival on the northern soul scene.

I was surprised to find out that Gladys Knight and the Pips released'I heard it through the grapevine' before Marvin Gaye.

Likewise Otis Redding wrote and recorded 'respect' before Aretha Franklin.

ARichVernacular · 07/11/2015 11:04

Doreen high five Grin love me a bit of Dulli.
