Portly - the MM version is fantastic, isn't it.

tiddlyipom · 06/11/2015 23:44

I think Sinead O'Connor's version of Nothing Compares To You is one of the best covers ever.

Mrsbennington · 06/11/2015 23:44

Sinead might have been gorgeous but I much preferred The Familys version.

Jaxsbum · 06/11/2015 23:45

wow first time I heard it, but that is god

Brian Ferry's version of Jealous Guy is so much better than the John Lennon version (even though JL wrote it).

Jaxsbum · 06/11/2015 23:49

so true.
I always thank mn for showing me how much better the who version of behind blue eyes is to limp bizkets

I was going to say about Jealous Guy too Kate, also I prefer the Sting cover of Little Wing to the Jimi Hendrix original.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 06/11/2015 23:49

Blush to admit it but Marc Almond cover of 'Jacky' is a shameful favourite of mine

mathanxiety · 06/11/2015 23:51

I second that KateMiddleton. He has done a lot of covers and imo he nailed them all.

McPie · 06/11/2015 23:51

MaisieDotes I never realised that, Dh knew but there's 5 years in it so that's my excuse!!! I beyond love David Grey and after a wee YouTube search I would stand by his version of Say Hello Wave Goodbye any day Grin

Mrsbennington · 06/11/2015 23:53

Bauhaus - Ziggy Stardust = Excellent cover and as much as I love Bowie this is better.

DriverSurpriseMe · 06/11/2015 23:53

Why would you assume he was dead Netball? Confused

I have a vague recollection that Marc Almond had a serious brush with death a few years back, either through illness or accident? I'll have to Google now.

ChilliAndBint · 06/11/2015 23:55

It's an old song from the 60's.

Tiggeryoubastard · 06/11/2015 23:55

It was a motorcycle accident.

Devora · 06/11/2015 23:56

Yep, Marc Almond had a terrible motorbike crash. He's recovered now

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/11/2015 23:57

Best cover ever = The Wedding Present doing, 'Come Up and See Me, Make Me Smile'.

I didn't know until tonight that the song that goes, 'The best things in life are free' etc was a cover - hadn't realised that The Flying Lizard's song and The Beatles song were the same song! Not a fan of The Beatles though, if that is any excuse for my idiocy.

Tiggeryoubastard · 06/11/2015 23:57

The one they just had Mariah Carey warbling was much better sung by the 'Ken Lee' woman.

MaisieDotes · 07/11/2015 00:01

McPie I actually really like the Marc Almold original, although I've only heard it once or twice.

I've heard the David Gray version a lot of times.

Agree with joffrey that the MA one is more raw of emotion, or something.

Devora · 07/11/2015 00:01

This thread has reminded me that when she was about 7 dd had to do a peformance at her theatre club to get her bronze certificate or something. All the kids had to pick a piece of music and make up a dance to it. dd chose to do hers to Tainted Love and we spent a week practising dance moves (she was particularly keen on Marc Almond's wrist-banging action). Then, on the day, all the other kids were jumping around to Wheels on The Bus and I suddenly saw how ridiculously poncey my (already rather, um, quirky) child was looking. The other mums were a bit Hmm 'Stop reliving your youth through your child, you saddo'

tanukiton · 07/11/2015 00:02

i really like the M M version of tainted love too the video works really well with the song

Pipbin · 07/11/2015 00:03

I remember it becoming known about 20 years ago. I thought it was original until then too.

Bambambini · 07/11/2015 00:22

Ok, I'm embarrassed to admit this but... I actually insisted to folk at the time that Oasis "Wonderwall" was a cover version of a sixties song from Mike Pops flowers or whatever the fuck his name was.

LineyReborn · 07/11/2015 00:28

The All Saints cover of LaBelle's Lady Marmalade is fucking shameful.

MotherOfFlagons · 07/11/2015 00:29

And it's still one of the most impossible songs to dance to. We've all tried it. You get up there on the dancefloor and do a sort of a step/shuffle/arm thing for about a minute and then give up.

ARichVernacular · 07/11/2015 00:31

Remus I also like the Wedding Present cover of 'Cattle and Cane'.

Some other top 90s indie covers: Dinosaur Jr - Just Like Heaven, Drop Nineteens - Angel, Afghan Whigs - My World Is Empty Without You...
