Rod's version is not the original. It's a Danny Whitten song. I think Rod's version is great though.

ginghamcricketbox · 08/11/2015 19:45

I don't wanna talk about it was written and released by Crazy Horse in 1971 and is better than Rod Srewarts version

It just goes to show really how many songs are covers- that many aren't aware of. Some become so well known in their own right, that the fact they are a cover is rarely, if ever, mentioned (especially if the original was not that well known, or by a little known act).

And when I watched the second of the programmes on covers, last night, I was very amused by how batshit the Flying Lizards were/are.Grin Their cover of 'Best things...' brings back many memories of being about 8- and thinking it sounded awful Grin

And Doctor- I read you post earlier, and have been singing 'I started a joke' ever since - I love the BeeGees version, it's one of my favourites, really suited Robin's voice. (It is also the song his son played to him after he died, which makes it very poignant, really).

Gloria Jones was the gf of Marc Bolan. I'm old enough to remember Soft Cell bringing it out. I was aware it was a cover but didn't hear the original till I was older.

I always think if you're going to do a cover do it different to the original and put your own 'spin' on it and I think Soft Cell did this well. It's one of mt all time favourite songs.

vienna1981 · 08/11/2015 20:25

Raahh. That Flying Lizards song is 'Money'. The Beatles recorded it as an album track in the early sixties. I think Barrett Strong wrote it (co-writer of 'Papa Was A Rolling Stone).

sharonthewaspandthewineywall · 08/11/2015 20:28

Say hello wave goodbye was def better by soft cell than that eternal bore David Gray

mewkins · 08/11/2015 20:30

I love a good cover version and don't usually think one is better than the other - just different (except Alexandra Burke or anything x factorish of course). I love it when a band I love do a b-side cover. It used to happen a lot...when there were still b-sides I guess! Vaguely recall Badly Drawn Boy doing a lovely Walk Away Renee and Travis doing The Weight, Idlewild doing When the Ship Comes in. All fab.

And Rod can sing anything as far as I am concerned.... I like that he just sings what he loves.

ijustwanttobeme · 08/11/2015 21:00

oops, didn't realise Rod's wasn't the original.

longtimelurker101 · 08/11/2015 21:04

Berry Gordy, of Motown fame, wrote Money (that's what I want) as it should be properly titled.

The Hendrix version of All along the watch tower is better than the Dylan original.

I actually preferred the Mark Ronson/Winehouse version of Valerie to the original and the Lily Allen version of Oh my god.

Also always quite liked the Sid Vicious version of my way..

Janeymoo50 · 08/11/2015 21:11

One of my fave songs from the 80's, I knew it was a cover version a while ago but not at the time it came out.

ComposHatComesBack · 08/11/2015 22:29

Vienna Jerry Lee Lewis also did a version of 'Money' on his Live at the Star Club album. I think that may be my favourite. Well worth a listen.

ComposHatComesBack · 08/11/2015 22:31

Oh and Berry Gordy (founder of Motown) wrote 'money' not Barrett Strong.

vienna1981 · 09/11/2015 04:22

Money. I read on Barrett Strong's Wikipedia bio that he claimed authorship, as well as Berry Gordy. There appear to have been a number of recorded versions but Jerry Lee Lewis is a new one to me.

The music on the advert with robots - confused.com
is apache by the shadows (or based on it)

Or so I thought - just done a search and the shadows version is a cover of a 1960 version by jorgen ingman!

I was astonished, a few years ago, to discover just how many songs were written by the Bee Gees. I'd come across some number and thought "Why have the Bee Gees decided to do a version of this? Oh..." I had, for example, assumed that Islands in the Stream was written by Dolly Parton, who, as was observed earlier, is no mean songwriter herself; or possibly by Kenny Rogers, ditto. Nope.

vienna1981 · 09/11/2015 09:32

One of the best Bee Gees songs with a better known cover version is 'Only One Woman' by Marbles (Graham Bonnet & chum). Outstanding lead vocal.

ComposHatComesBack · 09/11/2015 10:30

vienna oh it is good (in fact the whole live at the star club is worth a listen.

Stevenhydesafro1 · 09/11/2015 10:40

The Britney Spears cover of Oops I did it again is a completely different vibe from the original which dh has just played me by ..... Louis Armstrong!

Elendon · 09/11/2015 10:48

Marc Almond's Say Hello Wave Goodbye, is the best version.

Tainted Love is a great song - Soft Cell captured the zeitgeist of the 80s with their version, which is why it's so good.

rumbelina · 09/11/2015 10:51

"Marc Bolan died in a car crash iirc

Sadly, he did ... but to mix you up even more, didyouwritethe, the car he died in was driven by Gloria Jones, the artist who recorded Tainted Love (ahead of Marc Almond),"

^^This has just caused a rift in the space time continuum.

JoffreyBaratheon · 09/11/2015 11:13

I prefer Dolly Parton's version of 'I Will Always Love You' to Whitney's. In fact, it's not just a better vocal but also about 1000 times more sensitive and emotive, I think. Have never got why it's not eclipsed the other version.

didyouwritethe · 09/11/2015 18:28

Confused Shock

Grin

I'll never remember who's who in all that, rumbelina.

Raahh · 09/11/2015 19:13

Steven- I'm pretty sure that is a hoax.

oops

revealall · 09/11/2015 20:48

Blimey. Never knew about Gloria.

Why has there never been a proper cover of Come Undone by Duran Duran? Great song but sounds dated. Please redo it someone.
