To say men playing video games is childish?

My DP is the most wonderful person, and the video games don't annoy me to an extent of anger, but they do raise my eyebrow a lot.

DP is only 22 but I think this is still too old to be playing games, although I understand men more than twice his age do. I once asked DP ''aren't you a little old for those?" And his reply was a very calm 'no, it's a stress reliever and my boss plays it too' (his boss is 44 with a wife and 2 DCs).

What cringes me out the most is him swearing and talking to other players over the zombie games etc, who are mores often that not less than half his age or not much older than half his age! Yes, really.

I understand that I'm lucky he's the type to ask 'do you want me to come off this?' And often I just say no darling. This is because I can get on with other things. Even I ask him to come off, he will and you wouldn't have known he even liked playing because he acts so normal once he's off.

My DP is a 'normal' bloke in all aspects apart from the silly video games. I just wish he'd stick to fishing instead lol.

AIBU to say grown men playing video games is a little bit eye brow raising worthy? I understand it is a stress buster, and perhaps I'm just a moody cow and need to be put in my place by fellow MNetters.

Jacob. I write about Mass Effect and Dragon Age. Mostly smutty and romance stuff.

MustBeLoopy390 · 16/10/2015 19:51

Brown hair, few tattoos (inc a princess one and gaming one) some black clothing but relatively 'mainstream' IMO. We're a bit of a nerdy/geeky/gamer household, there's only the baby that doesn't play games.

LeftMyRidingCropInTheMortuary · 16/10/2015 19:52

oooh Marmite - I had JUST been saying I was enjoying the good senses of humour on this thread and then you came along!

JacobFryesTopHatLackey · 16/10/2015 19:52

tali can you pm me a link? Smile

bruffin · 16/10/2015 19:52

Leftmyriding
I am 53 going grey natural. Only piercings are one in each ear. No tattoos either.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 16/10/2015 19:53

humans play games - it's one of the things that makes different to other animals

MustBeLoopy390 · 16/10/2015 19:53

TaliZorahVasNormandy I'm not at the mumsnet and gaming multitasking level just yet, but aiming for that soon Grin

TaliZorah · 16/10/2015 19:54

I also write fanfiction Smile I also have several (retired) piercings, and used to have unnaturally coloured hair! The horror ;)

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 16/10/2015 19:54

TaliZorah · 16/10/2015 19:56

TaliZorahVasNormandy WHO DO YOU SHIP FROM M/E?! Important question

Orangeisthenewbanana · 16/10/2015 19:56

left Sinister?? Confused

Are you one of the "violent videotapes are the root of all the world's evil" brigade?

FWIW, I have only ear piercings (2), no tattoos, a professional degree and hold a senior post working in healthcare. Oh wait. I do dye my hair - because at 35 I am not ready to give into the premature grey just yet!

Orangeisthenewbanana · 16/10/2015 19:58

That should be violent "video games" obviously! Blush

Now I am showing my age!

RealHuman · 16/10/2015 19:59

All Trek.

But TNG was my first love.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 16/10/2015 19:59

Officially Kaidan. None of this entire species made up of women crap.

sltorres9 · 16/10/2015 20:00

YABVU. Owning a console and playing a game on it isn't childish. Shouting at other people playing isn't childish either. I've played COD before and to be honest the language was very tame! I've heard worse on the streets. Your OH is only 22, only 4 years older (I'm guessing) than most people playing the game. What's the big deal?
Mountain. Molehill

LeftMyRidingCropInTheMortuary · 16/10/2015 20:00

No, orange, it's nothing to do with that. It's just creepy - like they have no life and just sit in a darkened room and have never matured. Wouldn't leave my kid with that sort of man I'm afraid!

*disclaimer - I wouldn't leave my (theoretical) child with hardly anyone!

AmonAmarth · 16/10/2015 20:03

There's a difference between making jokes and flat out insulting people.

59% of people in America play video games, and I doubt it's much different here. Doesn't seem like we're the weird ones.

MustBeLoopy390 · 16/10/2015 20:04

People say us gamers have no life. We have loads. Grin

TheMotherOfHellbeasts · 16/10/2015 20:06

Big thank you to those writing fan fiction, I love reading it Grin.

Star Trek has to be Voyager though

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 16/10/2015 20:08

Mother, I used to have a huge crush on Tom Paris.

Ragwort · 16/10/2015 20:08

I would find it odd if my DH played video games, or whatever you call them - but I expect lots of people would find our 'hobbies' a bit odd. Grin. I have never played a video game in my life so I really don't see the attraction (I did try once with my teenage son but found the whole experience mind numbingly boring) - but my DH can sit on the riverbank for hours fishing which a lot of people find totally bizarre and boring. Grin.

JacobFryesTopHatLackey · 16/10/2015 20:08

Thanks tali.

real Smile

seems alright to me. Perfectly responsible and trustworthy when he's parenting our DC or looking after other kids when he goes to work as a teaching assistant.

iklboo · 16/10/2015 20:09

DH plays games. With the lights on & everything. Do you actually know any gamers or are you basing all your knowledge on crappy tv & film representations of gamers?

Orangeisthenewbanana · 16/10/2015 20:09

left, your reasoning is no less offensive. My DH and I both manage to drag ourselves out of our darkened gaming room to go to work, raise our daughter and have a life!

we don't actually sit in a darkened room to game!

PurpleDaisies · 16/10/2015 20:10

Voyager is my favourite Trek too mother. I used to switch between having a crush on Tom Paris and Chakotay depending on what mood I was in.
