To say men playing video games is childish?

PampersNotPampered · 16/10/2015 13:21

My DP is the most wonderful person, and the video games don't annoy me to an extent of anger, but they do raise my eyebrow a lot.

DP is only 22 but I think this is still too old to be playing games, although I understand men more than twice his age do. I once asked DP ''aren't you a little old for those?" And his reply was a very calm 'no, it's a stress reliever and my boss plays it too' (his boss is 44 with a wife and 2 DCs).

What cringes me out the most is him swearing and talking to other players over the zombie games etc, who are mores often that not less than half his age or not much older than half his age! Yes, really.

I understand that I'm lucky he's the type to ask 'do you want me to come off this?' And often I just say no darling. This is because I can get on with other things. Even I ask him to come off, he will and you wouldn't have known he even liked playing because he acts so normal once he's off.

My DP is a 'normal' bloke in all aspects apart from the silly video games. I just wish he'd stick to fishing instead lol.

AIBU to say grown men playing video games is a little bit eye brow raising worthy? I understand it is a stress buster, and perhaps I'm just a moody cow and need to be put in my place by fellow MNetters.

TheMotherOfHellbeasts there are two of us on this thread Grin thanks!

LefrMyRidingCrop you're clearly just jealous that some of us are capable of being feminine AND kicking ass on FPSs. ;)

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 16/10/2015 19:30

and that some of us can mumsnet and play at the same time. Multi tasking at its best.

LeftMyRidingCropInTheMortuary · 16/10/2015 19:31

Jacob - yeah, but you are breeding WITH EACH OTHER. That's ok. Although I fear for your children. Do they have massive gaming thumbs?

I'd love to marry a clean football fanatic!

Tali - is your hair naturally red or dyed an unnatural colour? (My image has you as the latter).

LeftMyRidingCropInTheMortuary · 16/10/2015 19:32

Tali - totally imagining you dressed like Lady Mary and asking your butler to "fetch the xbox" so you can kick some ass.

PampersNotPampered · 16/10/2015 19:34

I always find it odd that people always assume I'm older than DP, when really, I'm considerably younger really Envy

Yes I was talking to you TaliZorah Grin

I own a ranch in South America, so most of the time I'm in jeans, shirts and boots. I do have a tattoo though (the dates of birth of all the babies we lost to miscarriage or still birth in tiny roman numerals all the way down my spine).

TheMotherOfHellbeasts · 16/10/2015 19:37

Ahhh crossed posts - to both of you then!

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 16/10/2015 19:40

It's unnatural red. Ruby red to be precise. My hair natural colour is very boring.

FYI I'm a PS4 girl.

ALemonyPea · 16/10/2015 19:41

I love a good video game. It's great escapism from my very stressful life.

I worked damn hard to get my level 10 town hall in Clash of Clans Grin

JacobFryesTopHatLackey · 16/10/2015 19:41

Oooh I don't know, ridingcrop, I'll check their hands in the morning. Who knows they may even be webbed?

tali you looking forward to the new COD Black Ops?

UmbongoUnchained · 16/10/2015 19:42

I personally wouldn't date someone who plays video games but I know plenty of people who do play games. I just do other things with them.

ALemonyPea · 16/10/2015 19:42

Ah, X posted. So if you're younger than him, you're trying to be all mature by not wanting him playing on a game?

LeftMyRidingCropInTheMortuary · 16/10/2015 19:43

You are all very weird.
But I'm glad you all have a sense of humour. You must need it, living in your parents' basement, surrounded by star wars memorabilia.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 16/10/2015 19:46

Ahhhh yes it so hard, living in my nice little house, working and being a geek. Oh and to prove had geeky I am, I write fanfiction on my 2 favourite games.

I've never played COD. Wonder if I should.

RealHuman · 16/10/2015 19:46

Star Wars?

Please.

I'm a Trekker.

Orangeisthenewbanana · 16/10/2015 19:47

My DH is a gamer, and has got me more interested in it too. We often play co-op games together. So I guess you would consider us both childish? Like your DH, he will always ask if I mind him playing independently of an evening. It doesn't interfere with his work or our lifestyle/time together. It's his way of unwinding, not sure how it's any different from other partners wanting to watch MOTD/Top Gear or go to watch the football?

With regards to kids and gaming, I would say it is a definite advantage. We are constantly shaking our heads in disbelief in computer game shops where parents who obviously have no idea about gaming, just buy whatever their little darling is asking for, blatantly unaware or uncaring of whether the content is suitable.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 16/10/2015 19:48

High Five Real

iklboo · 16/10/2015 19:49

You're considerably younger than 22??

CainInThePunting · 16/10/2015 19:49

It's childish. Without a doubt.

I would not entertain a man who played video games other than as a way to engage with his young children.

No chance.

marmitemofo · 16/10/2015 19:49

Wow leftmyridingcrop massive stereotypes in your posts, but at least you know you're bigoted, I'll give you that Hmm

I'm 30, female gamer, read comics and used to cosplay at the odd convention before my DD was born. But I am also a regular baker and avid knitter (currently knitting my DD a cardigan, knitting a blanket, and as usual have several small projects on the go). I don't see why having one hobby precludes the other? Or does that only fit in with your narrow view of the world where there are two types of women: feminine (as defined solely by your idea of femininity) vs. not? It might be a bit of a shock to you but people are a little more complex than that.

Oh and fyi my natural hair colour is brown and I don't dye it!

JacobFryesTopHatLackey · 16/10/2015 19:49

tali I write geeky fanfiction too. Assassin's Creed mostly Grin. And have my own home with a games room.

You definitely should play COD, good for stress relief.

real TNG, I hope?

LeftMyRidingCropInTheMortuary · 16/10/2015 19:50

I think it's not so much childish as slightly sinister.
Maybe like women who have dolls. Lots of dolls.

memyselfandaye · 16/10/2015 19:51

You've alluded to the fact you're pregnant, so, if you don't like how he speaks to kids, why have you chosen to have a child with him?
