To say men playing video games is childish?

PampersNotPampered · 16/10/2015 13:21

My DP is the most wonderful person, and the video games don't annoy me to an extent of anger, but they do raise my eyebrow a lot.

DP is only 22 but I think this is still too old to be playing games, although I understand men more than twice his age do. I once asked DP ''aren't you a little old for those?" And his reply was a very calm 'no, it's a stress reliever and my boss plays it too' (his boss is 44 with a wife and 2 DCs).

What cringes me out the most is him swearing and talking to other players over the zombie games etc, who are mores often that not less than half his age or not much older than half his age! Yes, really.

I understand that I'm lucky he's the type to ask 'do you want me to come off this?' And often I just say no darling. This is because I can get on with other things. Even I ask him to come off, he will and you wouldn't have known he even liked playing because he acts so normal once he's off.

My DP is a 'normal' bloke in all aspects apart from the silly video games. I just wish he'd stick to fishing instead lol.

AIBU to say grown men playing video games is a little bit eye brow raising worthy? I understand it is a stress buster, and perhaps I'm just a moody cow and need to be put in my place by fellow MNetters.

I love how people come on here and say how it's unhealthy and we should go outside and make real connections in the real world.

On an internet forum. The highly educational AIBU, no less.

gamerchick · 18/10/2015 12:34

Golf? is that a joke? I hope so because it's a bit rich to slag off gamers and then admit to playing that mind numbing load of wank. Hmm

GladysTheGolem · 18/10/2015 12:36

Ooh, Tali, I was looking into rentals!
Who do you recommend?

TaliZorah · 18/10/2015 12:36

Gamerchick I just spat my water out at that Grin

JCDenton · 18/10/2015 12:40

I actually like golf a lot, but it's a game where you effectively shut yourself off from the rest of the world with a group of like minded enthusiasts for several hours and repetitively try to achieve the same objective on different courses.

Sounds a lot like online gaming to me.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 18/10/2015 12:42

Gamerchick, I just properly lol'd at that Grin

Gladys, I use this company, www.boomerangrentals.co.uk/

They are pretty good. I pay £9.99 a month for my package. You make a list of games they have and they just send one from the top, you play and send it back, then they send another from the list.

BadLad · 18/10/2015 13:06

Presumably those who disapprove of games never:

Watch a film
Watch TV
Do sudoku
Do crosswords or word games
Do any form of math puzzles
Play cards
Play board games
Look at art
Do anything just for the sake of enjoyment
Do anything to improve hand-eye coordination
Enjoy anything story-based

If you do, then you're a total hypocrite.

I remember a previous thread on this subject. The poster disapproving of games was even stupider than the ones on here who can't understand that you can play games AND do sports. That poster asked why people were still obsessed with "bloody Space Invaders". Perhaps at work she still uses a ZX Spectrum.

Rebecca2014 · 18/10/2015 13:08

When my ex moved out , I brought myself a PlayStation. I am a 26 year old woman!

Toria2014 · 18/10/2015 14:00

I ventured outside this morning and enjoyed by outside hobby, (horse) shock horror, now I am back indoors and the toddler is napping, so its Mass Effect 3 for me!

YouTheCat · 18/10/2015 14:01

The only golf I've ever played is Mario Golf on the Gameboy. Grin

My ex used to complain that me reading a book was anti-social. He hated me having an hour gaming here and there even more. But all he does with his time is drink and fall asleep in front of the telly.

BoneyBackJefferson · 18/10/2015 14:13

To all those saying that this is childish:-

Do you know how many times gamers have saved to world?

If its not Zombies, its aliens or machines gone haywire.

We save you without a word of thanks and its all because we care.

You are most welcome. Flowers

NuckyS · 18/10/2015 15:01

Tali

Does Amazon/Lovefilm still have a game rental option? I looked into that but thought I'd be better off buying given how long it takes me to get through a game these days (AC Rogue is 9hrs and took me over a month!!)

On another note, it's really important to hear the voices of female gamers. The industry has serious problems with women, both in terms of careers and with representation in mainstream titles. I wouldn't call any of those issues childish.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 18/10/2015 15:10

No, they stop it it. But with Boomrang you can keep the game as long as you want, you just need to keep paying your monthly fee.

I had Witcher 3 for over 4 weeks.

kali110 · 18/10/2015 16:58

Yes it's only the people who don't play games who are being insulting and childish.

mother i too distract myself playing games on my phone when i'm in severe pain or can't sleep!

I haven't played on a console for a good while but love my phone!
I never take the piss out of people who go to the gym all the time, play football or golf etc as they enjoy it!
It's their hobby so why insult people who like games?
That just makes you childish.

jorahmormont · 18/10/2015 17:04

Boney Grin Grin Grin

KarenHegarty1972 · 18/04/2019 16:07

Most men play video games, i don't see your problem. Let him enjoy his life.

iklboo · 18/04/2019 16:35

This thread is 3 1/2 years old. They've probably finished the game by now Grin

SilverySurfer · 18/04/2019 17:02

YABU. I'm in my 70s, mostly housebound due to being disabled and I play games on my laptop. There's nothing like hacking and slashing through mobs in a dungeon if you're in a bad mood Grin

LeftMyRidingCropInTheMortuary
I find female gamers even weirder to be honest. I imagine them to be dressed in black and have tattoos and wildly coloured hair and piercings and all that jazz.

You seem to have an over-active imagination. I'm dressed in pale blue with grey hair and zero tattoos and piercings.

Twelve years ago I started chatting to a young lad on the game I played then. Even with the huge disparity in age, we both enjoyed the game and had a similar sense of humour. He lived in Russia at time and a couple of years later he and his family moved to Australia, he finished school and went to University. I gave him girl friend advice which seemed to work, he got his degree and is now working as a social worker. We still chat on Skype every day and we consider each other to be the best of friends.

Unlikely that would have happened watching tv Hmm

JAPAB · 18/04/2019 17:29

People can raise their eyebrows all they want at my playing Witcher 3 or anything else.

And as a horror fan, when games get that right I love it. Thinking of older titles like System Shock 2 and The Cradle mission from Thief 3. But Outlast and Silent Hill 2 were also pretty good.
