To say men playing video games is childish?

PampersNotPampered · 16/10/2015 13:21

My DP is the most wonderful person, and the video games don't annoy me to an extent of anger, but they do raise my eyebrow a lot.

DP is only 22 but I think this is still too old to be playing games, although I understand men more than twice his age do. I once asked DP ''aren't you a little old for those?" And his reply was a very calm 'no, it's a stress reliever and my boss plays it too' (his boss is 44 with a wife and 2 DCs).

What cringes me out the most is him swearing and talking to other players over the zombie games etc, who are mores often that not less than half his age or not much older than half his age! Yes, really.

I understand that I'm lucky he's the type to ask 'do you want me to come off this?' And often I just say no darling. This is because I can get on with other things. Even I ask him to come off, he will and you wouldn't have known he even liked playing because he acts so normal once he's off.

My DP is a 'normal' bloke in all aspects apart from the silly video games. I just wish he'd stick to fishing instead lol.

AIBU to say grown men playing video games is a little bit eye brow raising worthy? I understand it is a stress buster, and perhaps I'm just a moody cow and need to be put in my place by fellow MNetters.

I'm wondering if I went to school with isit?

I got sneered at for liking superheroes. I got sneered at for playing games. Plenty of sneering for liking anything they deemed 'childish' or 'not feminine'.

I'm glad I didn't listen to them.

TaliZorah · 18/10/2015 11:27

YouTheCat me too. I was laughed at for liking anime and graphic novels, apparently I should have liked MTV and sleb gossip and sports. Damn us for forming our own opinions on things!

JacobFryesTopHatLackey · 18/10/2015 11:29

Actually I learnt a lot from playing unity. It was a historical period I had never looked into. I ended up doing a lot of research into jacobins and girondists and Napoleon and the reign of terror amongst other things.

youthecat screw them. I think you sound awesome. Smile and that's a non passive aggressive one.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 18/10/2015 11:30

I was once called boring for documentaries. I suppose I should be watching everyone get murdered on Emmerdale and watching "Slebs" whining about shit on Big Brother.

TaliZorah · 18/10/2015 11:32

We're clearly all terrible sad childish people Shock

JacobFryesTopHatLackey · 18/10/2015 11:35

tali and tali, seems like we can't win either way.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 18/10/2015 11:36

Jacob, I dont really care if people sneer. I can have a decent conversation about various things rather than just badly acted soaps and insulting other people.

Rdoo · 18/10/2015 11:37

Clearly and I haven't even mentioned my interest in lego and my intention to buy a train set soon

TaliZorah · 18/10/2015 11:40

Jacob the thing I find funny is we're the ones people are claiming are childish yet theyre the ones going out of their way to insult us for how we spend our free time when it doesn't affect them in the slightest.

TaliZorah · 18/10/2015 11:41

Rdoo -whispers- before I had DS I actually used to work in GAME. Games all day erryday. The anti gamers will lynch me.

JacobFryesTopHatLackey · 18/10/2015 11:46

tali Grin shock horror, we seem well rounded intelligent people who can formulate a coherent argument.

I'd like to add that this thread shows that the stereotypical gamer is rarer than hens teeth.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 18/10/2015 11:49

I shall continue to play my games and write some naughty about them afterwards. That's how I roll Grin

bruffin · 18/10/2015 11:50

DD 18 has a lovely collection of pop vinyls Jacob
I like them but they are too big and we dont have much room to store them.

TaliZorah · 18/10/2015 11:50

Couldn't agree more. When I worked there the amount of people who came in were all different ages and genders, different professions and so on, the only thing they all had in common was they liked games.

Guess what gamers are as diverse as anyone else, who knew!

JacobFryesTopHatLackey · 18/10/2015 11:55

bruffin they are so cute aren't they. My next set will by firefly and dp wants the sherlock pops.

TaliZVN amen. As will I. I need to do some more research into Victorian social etiquette for my one of my syndicate fics and a bit of research into time travel paradoxes for my unity one.

Btw, does anyone fancy a permanent games and geekery thread when this one runs out? I have really enjoyed chatting with you all.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 18/10/2015 11:59

I do Jacob. I love geeking it out with my people. We also need to start plotting to take over the earth.

GladysTheGolem · 18/10/2015 12:04

I hope I'm not the only one here counting down until Fallout 4, couldn't justify the cost of the GAME limited pre order one so have the soudtrack/artbook edition coming next month.

I hated AC (disliked the time travel story, couldnt get into it) so never played the sequels, looks like I may have to check one out? you're a terrible bunch for making me want to spend money!

Rdoo · 18/10/2015 12:05

I would love that...if only so I can excitedly tell you all that Wednesday is "back to the future day".

TaliZorah · 18/10/2015 12:05

I'd love one Jacob!

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 18/10/2015 12:07

Gladys, I dont spend much on games, for I rent them and they drop on my mat with the post and I squeal like a loon because I have what I want.

AndrastesKnickerweasels · 18/10/2015 12:15

I'm 24, DP is 35. I have a 4 year-old.
We have identical console set-ups next to each other in the living room.

"SHUT UP, CUTSCENE!" is frequently heard, as is "Wait, gotta pause!" DD frequently asks to watch our games and will play minecraft all day if you let her.

Our conservatory is a dedicated tabletop gaming room, and our wardrobe is half full of costumes for our LARP.

DP works for the government doing things with Wills and Estates, and I'm an education student.

OP, you should have known all the gamers would crawl out of the woodwork. Plonker move, yeah?

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 18/10/2015 12:18

Just leaving this in here for the Thane Krios fans.

SerafinaScoresby · 18/10/2015 12:18

Bought my DP an Xbox one for his 29th this year. We love gaming, as do the children. Right at this moment he and the kids are on there doing a group project on minecraft. Tonight, when the children are in bed and all the tidying/prep for tomorrow is done, we might both go on other games. Or he may play his guitar for a while, or I might read a book. It is exactly the same as any other hobby. Some people enjoy it, just because you don't doesn't mean it is childish.

JacobFryesTopHatLackey · 18/10/2015 12:18

Right here it is : www.mumsnet.com/Talk/other_subjects/2489711-Blessed-are-the-Geeks-for-they-shall-inherit-the-Earth-A-thread-for-discussing-all-things-geek?watched=1 I have to venture into the daylight and take the kids to the inlaws for Sunday lunch but I'll be back to post on it later.

Isitchristmasyet4 · 18/10/2015 12:30

youthecat
I'm quite the tomboy myself and I'm currently wearing batman knickers (tmiGrin) so it definitely wasn't me bullying you in school, never bullied anyone in my life. Can't believe I had to clear that up

Also for the record I just love smileys Grin they're cute lol! And I'm not trying to force my opinion on anymore, I'm just replying to people? So gamers are allowed to reply but not me. This is getting a bit boring I'm off to play some golf Grin oh flip, probably shouldn't have used that smiley, hopefully it hasn't offended anyone Grin oh shit there I go again!
