migrants - AIBU to wonder how this will all work out ?

lovelyconverse123 · 04/09/2015 20:27

My understanding of the migrant crisis is that the majority of the migrants are coming from countries which do not, in any way, share or support Western beliefs/values/way of life. They are now flooding into Western Europe in the hundreds of thousands. Nobody knows who they are or their background in their home country. AIBU to wonder what will be the result of this ?

They are fleeing war/violence etc. AIBU to wonder why, when they reach Hungary, which is a 'safe' country, (although economically depressed), is it not good enough and they are determined to reach Germany, UK, Austria etc ?

AIBU to wonder why the majority of these migrants feel it is acceptable to stampede through European law immigration procedures to reach their chosen country rather than wait and be correctly processed in the 'safe country they have landed in ? Surely if a person has landed in a 'safe' country, after witnessing goodness knows what in their home country, they should respect and adhere to the policies and procedures of that country ?

AIBU to wonder how this will all work out ?

I would like to hear your calm and measured thoughts please................

But you were referring to Halal meat when you said trampling all over my religious beliefs Lil?

So pipbin doesn't really need to apologise to you.

cressetmama · 05/09/2015 20:07

Please ladies. Halal meat or non-halal meat is not the real issue, surely?

SansaryaAgain · 05/09/2015 20:07

Must be the Scientologists Jeffrey, getting Tom Cruise to say a quick sci-fi prayer over the cold meats aisle...

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 05/09/2015 20:08

It certainly isn't, cresset - but we have a poster on here RANTING on about it. Hmm

Pipbin · 05/09/2015 20:08

So if you are Jewish then you would or course that you wouldn't have any problem with meat being kosher. To my shame I don't actually know anything about the Sikh process of blessing meat and I'm not aware of it being available in supermarkets labeled or otherwise. So if you weren't referring to halal meat then what were you referring to?

BigRedBall · 05/09/2015 20:08

Which unpleasant way? I'm not anywhere as unpleasant as the people spouting hysterical crap on this thread.

Cerseirys · 05/09/2015 20:09

Fair point cressetmama, we should probably stop with the derail of the halal blessed meat and go back to the topic at hand.

Pipbin · 05/09/2015 20:10

A number of other topics have been talked about on here but its ok just pick up on my one after all you all love to jump at the chance to make shit up about what I say - right Pipbin - instead of reading what people write just jump to assumptions.

And thank you for so graciously accepting and acknowledging my apology.

emotionsecho · 05/09/2015 20:10

The UK has passed into law that it will spend 0.7% of its Gross National Income on aid, last year we spent 11.4 billion. As you can see the 100m figure is neither here or there. We have made a legally binding commitment to spend that proportion of GNI on aid, if you disagree lobby your MP to have the Act rescinded.

The aid budget is not just for Syrian refugees.

If you want to know where it goes, Google and have a look.

Your comments about 'blessed meat' don't make any sense. Are you against all meat being blessed irrespective of which religion wants to bless it, or do you just want it labelled, and what exactly has blessed meat got to do with anything anyway? Is it a reason for not allowing Syrian refugees in, or is it another 'look they don't integrate, they want to do things differently' statement?

cressetmama · 05/09/2015 20:13

Faced with a serious humanitarian crisis, abbatoir practices do seem rather distracting. For the record, I prefer EU humane methods for my meat...

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 05/09/2015 20:15

I have tremendous love and respect for the Jewish faith. I'll try not to let the very unpleasant experience of reading Lil's posts change my feelings on that.

Lil - have a read back at your little anecdote - and imagine how you feel if they were made talking about "the 5 orthodox Jews I was at University with" - and using that as a reason not to take Jewish refugees in.

It's just as despicable.

BMW6 · 05/09/2015 20:16

Well bigredball calling people cunts who do not agree with you is unpleasant!

Rarity08 · 05/09/2015 20:18

Here here cressetmama well said.

LilMissSunshine9 · 05/09/2015 20:18

I said quite clearly in my original post about blessed meat that noone really gave a fuck that shops were selling blessed meat without informing their customers so it meant Sikhs and Jews were none the wiser that they were breaking their religious beliefs. You think that is right? How would you like it it your a vegan and someone hid meat in your food for years and you ate it without knowing.

I never said blessed meat should be banned only that it should be clearly labelled but that people who were asking for this were being labelled racist because massive assumptions were being made that it was being just halal meat and therefore people were being racists towards Muslims.

But that is the last I am saying on this topic.

cressetmama · 05/09/2015 20:19

And again, I may have missed the reports of Russia accepting lots of migrant-refugees, but I've watched reasonably closely. And I don't see them rolling out the red carpet. Yet Russia (having supplied weapons, money and presumably technology to the Syrian regime) does not appear to be on the migrant-refugee radar as a desirable destination. Sorry, but I think there's too much emotion here.

Cerseirys · 05/09/2015 20:19

Sorry, but if you sprout racist crap them I'm going to tell you it's racist crap. Everyone is entitled to an opinion but nobody is required to respect that opinion if it's a lot of ill-informed xenophobic bollocks. Which many of the comments on this thread have been. FFS, you'd think compulsory veiling and marriages to cousin Jim were just around the corner, the way some posters talk.

bessarabiantiger · 05/09/2015 20:23

I Have not RTFT.

we'll be taking in as many families as we can hold. And before anyone asks: until this we've been supporting addicts (from all over the World) and not said a fucking word. No bandwagon-leaping here, it's just the right thing to do if you can. Just to add, historically (please look it up), displaced people want to go home as soon as possible. Frankly, if I lived somewhere beautiful, I'd want to go home & rebuild too.

If you can help then help, if you can't help be kind, if you can't be kind be quiet. Please.

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 05/09/2015 20:25

BMW6, I don't think it was aimed at people for disagreeing with her - more for being racist and xenophobic (a few of which were so bad they've been deleted).

JeffreysMummyisCross · 05/09/2015 20:26

OK, so we've made "massive assumptions" that you were referring to halal meat, when in fact you weren't. So can you enlighten us as to what this unlabelled, blessed meat actually was?

Cerseirys · 05/09/2015 20:26

that is the last I am saying on this topic

Nice way to sidestep some of the other questions, namely how can you square being Jewish and being so anti-refugee when the UK opened their doors to those of your faith in the 1930s and 40s?

portico · 05/09/2015 20:29

I am confused. The Gulf states have funded some of the sides in the Iraq/Syria crisis, but it becomes incumbent upon Western Europe to take on the migrant refugees. Why cannot the Gulf States help their Muslim brothers. The UK is not exactly wealthy, we have sections of our population that are below the poverty line. I wish to see migrants come here who can integrate with UK culture and enhance its economy.

BigRedBall · 05/09/2015 20:29

So it's okay for racists to call people everything but cunts....and I say cunt and its unpleasant?!
Fine, I'll retract that cunt...lets all hear out the racists and play along nicely.

cressetmama · 05/09/2015 20:31

Grass-fed, suckled beef and lamb, reared outdoors, is always the healthiest and tastiest.. If it comes from the West Country, it's probably best of all.

Apologies all, the thread is a serious topic. I am not trying to derail.

LilMissSunshine9 · 05/09/2015 20:37

Any meat like lamb, chicken, beef I mean fgs are you really that stupid to ask that question. Supermarkets openly admitted they sold blessed meat without labelling it.

I am not sidestepping at all just answering as it goes.

Who said I am anti-refugee? Did I say I don't want any refugees to come here? No I didn't so I don't have to square anything.

emotionsecho · 05/09/2015 20:39

On the subject of the Aid Budget, as I know spending is high on your list of worries LilMiss, the UK were the first G7 country to meet the UN's 45 year old target of spending 0.7% of GNI on aid.

In 2013 only five other countries met or exceeded that target - Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Luxembourg and the UAE, the only other country to have previously consistently met that target was the Netherlands.

I am proud that the UK put this commitment into law, I will no doubt criticise some of the things the money has been spent on as is my right, but I think the principle to guarantee this level of spending is correct.

Those mentioning Russia, I think there is an awful lot going on in Russia at the moment with Ukraine, etc., also, some of the refugees are fleeing from atrocities committed by Assad who Russia supports so no doubt don't view it as a particularly safe haven.
