migrants - AIBU to wonder how this will all work out ?

lovelyconverse123 · 04/09/2015 20:27

My understanding of the migrant crisis is that the majority of the migrants are coming from countries which do not, in any way, share or support Western beliefs/values/way of life. They are now flooding into Western Europe in the hundreds of thousands. Nobody knows who they are or their background in their home country. AIBU to wonder what will be the result of this ?

They are fleeing war/violence etc. AIBU to wonder why, when they reach Hungary, which is a 'safe' country, (although economically depressed), is it not good enough and they are determined to reach Germany, UK, Austria etc ?

AIBU to wonder why the majority of these migrants feel it is acceptable to stampede through European law immigration procedures to reach their chosen country rather than wait and be correctly processed in the 'safe country they have landed in ? Surely if a person has landed in a 'safe' country, after witnessing goodness knows what in their home country, they should respect and adhere to the policies and procedures of that country ?

AIBU to wonder how this will all work out ?

I would like to hear your calm and measured thoughts please................

Right, so because we believe rightly or wrongly that all muslim countries would turn away Western refugees, the UK should?

Do we honestly want our country to follow the same ethical practices as a third world country? Should we not aim a little higher?

I honestly think onlysaying may be a troll with the absolute shite he/she is coming out with.

Iusedtobecarmen · 07/09/2015 12:55

Onlysaying,
A laugh out loud moment is a perfect way of describing it. Its beyond ludicrous.
I ofyen travel abroad to muslim countries. Granted im not living there but if I did emigrate I would expect any special treatment as a Christian. Id accept the ways of said muslim country and I would expect to have a church or get Christmas day off work. If those things were sooo important to me, I wouldn't fecking go there. Yet how comes when you come here, its expected that you get whatever you want.

just because I'm not towing your PC, hang-wringing, liberal viewpoint, doesn't mean I'm talking shite. That's whats wrong with the PC brigade, they get so indignant when someone disagrees with them and stands up to their views.

Not everyone has your liberal, wishy washy view on life. sorry if that's come as a shock to you

Cerseirys · 07/09/2015 12:57

Um, as has been pointed out upthread Lebanon, Egypt, Iraq and Jordan have all taken refugees.

I genuinely thought that requesting a female during medical examinations etc was a reasonable request, a patients right?

I can't speak for other areas, but round us they say they'll try to accommodate this wherever possible, but it can't be guaranteed (at least not without prior arrangement). In other words it doesn't seem to be an absolute right and wanting isn't the same as getting ... a lot like other migrant issues, in fact

Oh come on, sparkly. People barge their way onto the 5.21 train from Paddington - and they're not exactly in the same situation. What's their excuse? I've seen worse behaviour in city centres, when people are supposedly enjoying themselves.

Snowmunch · 07/09/2015 13:04

Saudi Arabia is just 60 miles away from Syria, across Jordan.

They speak the same language as the Syrians
They practice the same religion as the Syrians
The have a similar culture as the Syrians - e.g. women walk around in Burkas, Niqabs and Hijabs and they persecute LGBT people
Saudi is 16 X the size of England (yes SIXTEEN)
Saudi is 40% richer than the UK (GDP per capital PPP)
There are two Saudi Cities of 150,000 and 100,000 less than 100 miles from South of Syria.

But while the EU will take probably a million Syrians, how many have the Saudis taken?

ZERO.

You're clearly bitter about life, what happened? What happened to make you so quick to disbelieve a Syrian man's story about his experience in Syria but equally quick to believe refugees are demanding caviar?

I mean, you honestly seem to think there is no danger in Syria! That people are just leaving their lives behind for fun! You've somehow convinced yourself that the war there is what...made up??!
Sorry if I find it hard to believe that someone could genuinely be that deluded.

Please try and read some measured newspapers, not the daily mail. Honestly even a right wing broadsheet may help you, you're not getting accurate info from them and it's making you sound increasingly silly.

What kind of cultural and diversity training should I have do you think? One where I have to pander to every one who walks through the door. Im a NHS worker not a doormat.
Do migrants not have a duty to learn a bit of BRITISH culture too before coming here. Or is it all about accomodating everyone else?
I agree with posters who are commenting on those dont care if their British culture will all be destroyed eventually. And that they are.more worried about upsetting migrants.

For once I agree with you. We absolutely should aim higher than many intolerant muslim countries. However, we are too far the other way. Soft as shit. Cant we have some middle ground.

jorahmormont · 07/09/2015 13:06

I'm sorry, I missed the part where the refugees have already started demanding we cancel Christmas and knock down our churches.

I think it must be quite sad to be like some of you on this thread - constantly watching your back, terrified of these threats to your perceived Britishness, clutching your copy of the Daily Mail like it's going to protect you from the Muslims and their Islamification of the world.

Put thousands of London commuters on a train platform, then tell them only 1 train is leaving tonight. I guarantee you'd see behaviour like that. It's how humans behave, when they are panicked, over-crowded and in fear.

One Syrian I saw interviewed put it so simply "we are human beings."

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 07/09/2015 13:12

Onlysaying - you should move onto the Express, you know it's far more extreme than the Mail.

Iusedtobecarmen · 07/09/2015 13:13

I waiting for you to tell me what diversity training I need?

Lemonfizzypop · 07/09/2015 13:14

What the fuck has taking annual leave around religious holidays got to do with ANYTHING?!

No one on this thread has said that the gulf states should not also be helping, but their lack of action should not excuse the UK from playing their part.

No one on this thread has said that the UK should welcome all refugees but we need to do more than we are. We have the resources to help more than we are.

Of course we cannot open our borders indefinitely, but many councils have already pledged to take in a reasonable amount of refugees and resettle them. This needs to be done across the UK.

And yes, we should also be putting pressure on the Gulf states to help.

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 07/09/2015 13:15

Any at all would be a bonus, Carmen.

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 07/09/2015 13:16

sparkly, and you don't question that Syrian refugees might not want to go to another Middle Eastern country where they may be at risk of persecution?

International Law states that "Everyone has the right to seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution.”
