To think there's someone living in my loft?

On Monday morning when I returned from the school run the back door was wide open, I was a bit un-nerved, shouted hello and checked around, nothing seemed untoward or out of place so I presumed I'd left it open before I went. Fine.
Tuesday we didn't go to school, nothing to report.
Wednesday I closed and locked the back door and looked back at it as I was closing the front door, it was 100% shut and locked with the key in. Get back from the school run and it is wide open again. Now I'm freaked out.
We leave the key in the back door all the time to avoid puppy accidents while we're finding the key, so today just as an experiment I locked the back door and took the key to school with me. It was still shut and locked when I got in.
Now I've just been in the utility room, which is just off the kitchen (where the back door is) and it is part of a single storey extension so has a loft hatch, we've never ever been up there (I always kind of presumed it wasn't a proper loft) and as soon as I walked in I noticed the hatch had moved quite considerably, it was literally the first thing I saw as there is quite a gap around it so it has only happened since around 4pm; the last time I was in there.
The door to the utility room is always shut because the kids aren't allowed in there and I'm the only person in the house

AIBU to think the only logical explanation is that someone has recently moved into my utility room loft?

Just about to go for a shower.

With loft hatch.

I'm telling you somebody has been coming in and using your washing machine, I saw it on police interceptors!

Aaargh! I had a nightmare last night because of this thread. In my dream, I could hear noises from the garage (in reality, not so surprising as I think we've got mice in there), so me and DH went to investigate. I was standing at one end of the garage by the door, he was in the house, but beside where I was, having locked the outside door (up and over door). I was knocking on the door, shouting that there was a fire - suddenly a face looked up at the window. Scared the crap out of me, I shouted out, and woke myself up.

OP our loft hatch has two of these fitted sideways so the loft hatch can't be opened from above, might be worth thinking about. I don't know if it's because our loft spaces are all connected in our row of terraces, the loft is DH's job, but it seems likely.

Change the locks! I couldn't sleep at night knowing someone has been coming in/out of my house.

Havevrhe police been in yet?

TheoriginalLEM · 22/05/2015 18:50

Could it have been an earthquake that rattled the loft hatch door open a tad?

TheFlyingFauxPas · 26/05/2015 00:11

Are you still there OP?

chlo95 · 11/06/2015 16:52

MakeMeJumpIntoTheAir · 14/07/2015 22:53

bumping out of curiosity, was there a conclusion to this thread?

hibbledibble · 14/07/2015 23:03

I'm guessing op found nothing.

Maybe the puppy had learnt how to open the garden door Grin

Saw this yesterday and thought of this thread. Any connection? www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3208774/Man-jailed-sneaked-ex-s-house-set-home-LOFT.html

Our loft is completely open if we go up to get our Christmas decs down at the same time as our neighbour we can have a chat with him grin
We can see all the loft spaces above all the houses in our street!
- this is a massive fire risk. Any of the houses in the terrace have a fire, you all burn down! You should at the very least have a solid wall between you and your neighbours attics.

Also to stop intruders getting into one and then having access to all ofthem!

I thought the same when I read the article.
