To think there's someone living in my loft?

On Monday morning when I returned from the school run the back door was wide open, I was a bit un-nerved, shouted hello and checked around, nothing seemed untoward or out of place so I presumed I'd left it open before I went. Fine.
Tuesday we didn't go to school, nothing to report.
Wednesday I closed and locked the back door and looked back at it as I was closing the front door, it was 100% shut and locked with the key in. Get back from the school run and it is wide open again. Now I'm freaked out.
We leave the key in the back door all the time to avoid puppy accidents while we're finding the key, so today just as an experiment I locked the back door and took the key to school with me. It was still shut and locked when I got in.
Now I've just been in the utility room, which is just off the kitchen (where the back door is) and it is part of a single storey extension so has a loft hatch, we've never ever been up there (I always kind of presumed it wasn't a proper loft) and as soon as I walked in I noticed the hatch had moved quite considerably, it was literally the first thing I saw as there is quite a gap around it so it has only happened since around 4pm; the last time I was in there.
The door to the utility room is always shut because the kids aren't allowed in there and I'm the only person in the house

AIBU to think the only logical explanation is that someone has recently moved into my utility room loft?

I had hung a coat on the back of the door which is slightly ajar so I can hear Ds when he wakes. I've had to go move it cos I keep glancing up and thinking there's someone stood there Grin

SoupDragon · 21/05/2015 23:04

I have a lock on my bedroom door.

Even odder though is the fact that the DSs doors only lock and unlock from the outside... I often wonder about the previous owners .

GiddyOnZackHunt · 21/05/2015 23:05

pip what happened to point 3? Was it taken by the thing in the loft?

Op, do not watch paranormal witnessGrin

PeachyPants · 21/05/2015 23:07

It's been 20minutes since OP said she was going in the loft, do you think she's pulling our legs or do you think the Zombie squirrels, creepy demonic doll, axe murder has got her! I'm joking but I'm actually quite worried about her.

Pipbin · 21/05/2015 23:07

We have bats in our loft and they're tiny... But they still sound like there's 10 men stomping around up there every night. I'm sure you'd hear a person

I agree, bats clearly put on hob nail boots when they come in the loft.

However, you hear them when it is quiet at night and you are in bed. If this loft is only over the kitchen and the utility and you are not in the kitchen in silence at night time then you are less likely to hear the -crazed killer-- squirrels.

Shamelessly place marking for updates...

Haggisfish · 21/05/2015 23:08

Pipbin · 21/05/2015 23:09

pip what happened to point 3? Was it taken by the thing in the loft?

I didn't have an answer to that one. Either that or the person in the loft snuck down and deleted it.

SomedayMyPrinceWillCome · 21/05/2015 23:09

I'm tired but I want to know what's going on....

SoupDragon · 21/05/2015 23:10

Surely rats, bats and squirrels are unable to unlock and open back doors.

GlitzAndGigglesx · 21/05/2015 23:11

Oh ffs why do I click these threads as I'm about to go to sleep?! absolutely not shitting myself I don't have a loft so not bricking it quite as much

Pipbin · 21/05/2015 23:11

Surely rats, bats and squirrels are unable to unlock and open back doors.

Shush with your logic.

twirlypoo · 21/05/2015 23:11

Kitties with opposable thumbs could through soup dragon. They are evil enough to play mind games with you too.

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 21/05/2015 23:12

QOD Sweet dreams tonight Grin

PeachyPants · 21/05/2015 23:14

Ahh GlitzAndGigglesx if you're feeling left out then I'm sure there's plenty of places in your house where an axe murder could hide.

BlueBananas · 21/05/2015 23:14

I'm back!
So DP went in, I opened the back door so they could run away while DP looked at me like this - Hmm
And there's no-one up there...just an old piece of carpet and a manky old sock - anti-climax or what?!
There's also an old coal hole type bit in the utility room which was also empty then I made DP check all the nooks and crannies of the house and yeah, no murderers!

However, the door mystery goes unsolved so I'm going to do some investigations in the next few days, flour on the floor and such

...I wish I had something exciting to add
And I'm really blue bananas and not the loft dweller I promise!

The back door is still a good mystery though.
