To think there's someone living in my loft?

On Monday morning when I returned from the school run the back door was wide open, I was a bit un-nerved, shouted hello and checked around, nothing seemed untoward or out of place so I presumed I'd left it open before I went. Fine.
Tuesday we didn't go to school, nothing to report.
Wednesday I closed and locked the back door and looked back at it as I was closing the front door, it was 100% shut and locked with the key in. Get back from the school run and it is wide open again. Now I'm freaked out.
We leave the key in the back door all the time to avoid puppy accidents while we're finding the key, so today just as an experiment I locked the back door and took the key to school with me. It was still shut and locked when I got in.
Now I've just been in the utility room, which is just off the kitchen (where the back door is) and it is part of a single storey extension so has a loft hatch, we've never ever been up there (I always kind of presumed it wasn't a proper loft) and as soon as I walked in I noticed the hatch had moved quite considerably, it was literally the first thing I saw as there is quite a gap around it so it has only happened since around 4pm; the last time I was in there.
The door to the utility room is always shut because the kids aren't allowed in there and I'm the only person in the house

AIBU to think the only logical explanation is that someone has recently moved into my utility room loft?

Glad you're okay but slightly disappointed you didn't find Peter Andre in the loft...

Christinayanglah · 21/05/2015 23:45

I think that would have been worse than finding an axe murderer

BettyCatKitten · 21/05/2015 23:46

Phew! Glad to hear that op!Smile

Panic button is worrying too. Perhaps there's a nutter ex partner looking for the previous tenant / owner?

Maybe they think you are them and are trying to freak them.you out?

wigglylines · 21/05/2015 23:50

Oops sorry I only meant to post that once!

My computer is bein odd!

butterfly133 · 21/05/2015 23:59

Blue bananas, glad you're okay but sounds like someone is using your place to hide. Tell the police and also ask the neighbours if they've noticed anything, ask them to keep an eye out. You sound like you need extra security for the house. Stay safe!

Now what's this about a missing wife?!

BettyCatKitten · 22/05/2015 00:00

Call an exorcist or priest (I love a woo threadGrin)

BettyCatKitten · 22/05/2015 00:02

Butterfly the missing wife thread is in chat.

Gilrack · 22/05/2015 00:02

How does it sound like someone's coming in to hide? Confused

The missing wife thread's gone dead. I hope this means she turned up and is now safely tucked up with the OP.

Gilrack · 22/05/2015 00:05

BTW, there's a panic button in every room of my flat - sheltered accommodation Grin Reasonable enough if a previous resident was bed-bound, I think.

OsloGin · 22/05/2015 00:05

I think you need to change the locks.

WhatHappensNextNow · 22/05/2015 00:40

I would change the locks!

TapDancingMollusc · 22/05/2015 07:40

I would be changing the locks, putting a hefty bolt on the loft hatch with a strong padlock through that too. And forever think of it when I couldn't sleep or was alone in the house...

GemmaTeller · 22/05/2015 07:52

knittingdad I came to this thread after watching The Resident as well Grin

We have a bolt on the inside of our bedroom door - we've never had reason to use it but apparently the previous occupant (old couple) had trouble with their son threatening them.

MissPenelopeLumawoo2 · 22/05/2015 08:15

We have a loft hatch in our single storey extension, it is for maintenance of the roof I suppose. Never thought someone could live up there eyes up the hatch suspiciously

BitOutOfPractice · 22/05/2015 08:24

Op your house set up sounds similar to mine. There's a small single storey addition to the side of the house with the downstairs loo and until it's room. There's a loft hatch in the utility room with a small lift space. Not big enough for anyone to live in I hope

BitOutOfPractice · 22/05/2015 08:25

I also have a lock on my bedroom door. To stop small children wandering in when mommy and daddy are having "special cuddles" Grin

BettyCatKitten · 22/05/2015 08:28
Grin
