To think there's someone living in my loft?

On Monday morning when I returned from the school run the back door was wide open, I was a bit un-nerved, shouted hello and checked around, nothing seemed untoward or out of place so I presumed I'd left it open before I went. Fine.
Tuesday we didn't go to school, nothing to report.
Wednesday I closed and locked the back door and looked back at it as I was closing the front door, it was 100% shut and locked with the key in. Get back from the school run and it is wide open again. Now I'm freaked out.
We leave the key in the back door all the time to avoid puppy accidents while we're finding the key, so today just as an experiment I locked the back door and took the key to school with me. It was still shut and locked when I got in.
Now I've just been in the utility room, which is just off the kitchen (where the back door is) and it is part of a single storey extension so has a loft hatch, we've never ever been up there (I always kind of presumed it wasn't a proper loft) and as soon as I walked in I noticed the hatch had moved quite considerably, it was literally the first thing I saw as there is quite a gap around it so it has only happened since around 4pm; the last time I was in there.
The door to the utility room is always shut because the kids aren't allowed in there and I'm the only person in the house

AIBU to think the only logical explanation is that someone has recently moved into my utility room loft?

You would say that though, wouldn't you, axe murderer. Hmm Wink

PeachyPants · 21/05/2015 23:16

Phew, I can go to bed now, glad to here there wasn't a killer lurking up there, good luck with investigating the door though, please update BlueBananas.

tearsofrobertsmith · 21/05/2015 23:17

twirlypoo · 21/05/2015 23:18

Oh. Well. You know, ok glad your not dead and stuff, but come oooonnnn!! I wanted a loft dweller ending goddam it Grin

Maybe there's a one socked man in your garden right now reading this thread thinking "phew, cover not blown!"

Niklepic · 21/05/2015 23:18

Oh cross post, not dead. Jolly good although slightly disappointed at lack of gory ending

BettyCatKitten · 21/05/2015 23:18

pipGrin wank sock! I thought that too!
Op who are your neighbours?

Aermingers · 21/05/2015 23:19

How do we know she's not? The person might have come out of the loft....

GiddyOnZackHunt · 21/05/2015 23:21

Did you check inside the carpet?
Did he look up?
Just trying to be helpful Grin

Aermingers · 21/05/2015 23:22

Oooh, x post. There could still have been someone up there, the carpet and sock sound like it might have been used at some point...

BettyCatKitten · 21/05/2015 23:24

Did you unravel the carpet?
Could be someone in it, carpet is used as sleeping bag..,,

Gilrack · 21/05/2015 23:24

Phew :) Thanks for updating! Now for the back door ...

Mumbehavingbadly · 21/05/2015 23:24

Today 22:53 ChilliAndMint

"The devil is in the detail."

It's looking increasingly like he's in the OP's loft!

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 21/05/2015 23:25

So we're looking for an axe murderer with only one sock on. And no axe, unless he has it in his hand right now and he's.... standing behind you..?

SaucyJack · 21/05/2015 23:26

Well if you can't find a living person up there, then it's obviously a ghost.

ItsADinosaur · 21/05/2015 23:27

You need a camera, see what happens when you go out.

26Point2Miles · 21/05/2015 23:28

But why would a piece of carpet be up there? Is there a spy hole? Maybe someone has been watching you do your laundry and stole a sock?

GlitzAndGigglesx · 21/05/2015 23:30

PeachyPants there's the airing cupboard full of bedding and pillows that they could rest their head on after butchering me in my sleep

YouPooPooBumBum · 21/05/2015 23:30

Our loft is completely open if we go up to get our Christmas decs down at the same time as our neighbour we can have a chat with him Grin
We can see all the loft spaces above all the houses in our street!

Zzzsnatcher · 21/05/2015 23:32

Get out house and call police! And report any updates

HomeIsWhereTheHeartIs · 21/05/2015 23:33

DH suggests your back door lock is faulty. Have you tried to shove it open while it's locked?

BlueBananas · 21/05/2015 23:36

Just to answer these questions -

1 how did the person get in if you'd locked the back door?
The back door is open most of the day, Dpup runs freely in and out as back garden is enclosed. Realistically someone could've jumped the fence and got in at any time
2 if the utility room is a single storey extension there should be only air above it. How come there's a loft hatch?
This has already been answered so yeah, there's a hatch
3 when you say the loft hatch has moved, do you mean the loft hatch cover?
Yes I mean the bit of wood that covers the hole, like the lid/door to the loft
4 why have you got a lock on your bedroom door?
It was on when we moved in and we've just never changed it. It's not like a lock lock, it's like a public toilet lock here you just turn it from the inside (there's also a panic button, I'm thinking the previous owners were a tad cautious...maybe loft man has been before?! Shock)

Marking place for update on door mystery

BlueBananas · 21/05/2015 23:37

Giddy & Betty it wasn't a roll of carpet, it was just a scrap, like an off cut
