To think there's someone living in my loft?

On Monday morning when I returned from the school run the back door was wide open, I was a bit un-nerved, shouted hello and checked around, nothing seemed untoward or out of place so I presumed I'd left it open before I went. Fine.
Tuesday we didn't go to school, nothing to report.
Wednesday I closed and locked the back door and looked back at it as I was closing the front door, it was 100% shut and locked with the key in. Get back from the school run and it is wide open again. Now I'm freaked out.
We leave the key in the back door all the time to avoid puppy accidents while we're finding the key, so today just as an experiment I locked the back door and took the key to school with me. It was still shut and locked when I got in.
Now I've just been in the utility room, which is just off the kitchen (where the back door is) and it is part of a single storey extension so has a loft hatch, we've never ever been up there (I always kind of presumed it wasn't a proper loft) and as soon as I walked in I noticed the hatch had moved quite considerably, it was literally the first thing I saw as there is quite a gap around it so it has only happened since around 4pm; the last time I was in there.
The door to the utility room is always shut because the kids aren't allowed in there and I'm the only person in the house

AIBU to think the only logical explanation is that someone has recently moved into my utility room loft?

QOD · 21/05/2015 22:54

There's a.loft hatch behind my headboard ...

BeCool · 21/05/2015 22:55

If there was someone living is loft they would be very silly to leave the door open. I'm voting for squirrels.

poshfrock · 21/05/2015 22:56

Amateur My kitchen is in a single storey extension. It has a pitched roof ergo there is a loft space and a loft hatch. Not unusual.

PeachyPants · 21/05/2015 22:56

tilliebob what if that person just slithered around the attic wearing several layers of you old clothes to muffle the noise!

Pipbin · 21/05/2015 22:56

Just to answer some of these questions while we wait for OP:

1 how did the person get in if you'd locked the back door?
when the door was unlocked and OP was in the garden perhaps? I can't see my back door from my garden

2 if the utility room is a single storey extension there should be only air above it. How come there's a loft hatch?
My folks have a single storey extension with a loft above it. It has a pitched roof, it has a loft.

4 why have you got a lock on your bedroom door?
All the internal doors in my house have locks, with actual keys. No idea why though.

Hypotenuse · 21/05/2015 22:56

tilliebob why did you have to mention the Grudge? Not sleeping for weeks now. Just like when I watched that bloody film.

LaurieFairyCake · 21/05/2015 22:56

It's the wind

My loft hatch is always lifting

tilliebob · 21/05/2015 22:57

If some nutter starts wearing my old clothes, I'll have nothing left to wear Grin.

Honeyishrunkthekids · 21/05/2015 22:57

But does yours have someone living in it posh frock ?

bellathebluebell · 21/05/2015 22:58

There was a mirror above my bed (which apparently covered a stained glass window) when I was at University. When my Mum helped me move out she was convinced it was a two way mirror and my landlord had been spying on me........ Freaked me out. I didn't bother to look!

CountryMummy1 · 21/05/2015 22:58

We have bats in our loft and they're tiny... But they still sound like there's 10 men stomping around up there every night. I'm sure you'd hear a person Confused

tilliebob · 21/05/2015 22:59

twirlypoo · 21/05/2015 22:59

My loft is so full of crap id actually be a bit impressed if anyone could manage to find floor space to live in there. Maybe they could tidy it up and sort it into piles for me?
