Scottish identity

Do you feel you have one?

If you're not Scottish living in Scotland, do you think there is a Scottish identity?

Are you for real loop?

AgentCooper · 01/05/2015 07:33

I think someone was tanning the bevvy last night!

tilliebob · 01/05/2015 07:36

I'm with demystified - I wouldn't vote SNP unless someone has my kids at gunpoint, but I don't mind NS. I don't mind RD either but I can't see me voting Tory either still undecided I kinda wish there was still a Monster Raving Loony party as they'd probably make the most sense just now!

OOAOML · 01/05/2015 07:46

Well considering the abusive PM I've just read from loop I hope it was the bevvy talking and not just someone being vile.

tilliebob · 01/05/2015 07:51

Oh no! That's not on at all ConfusedShockBlushAngry

Jackieharris · 01/05/2015 07:54

Slim Jim' brigade will be all over mn this week.

OOAOML · 01/05/2015 08:00

It wasn't the worst I've read (I was on Facebook referendum pages and I've seen vile stuff from all sides on Twitter) but the first time I've had it from someone who is also opposed to the SNP. And thinking back over all the political threads I've been on here, they do get heated but considering the intense experience we've been through I think they do stay reasonably decent (unless everyone now is going to own up to masses of sweary PMs).

I don't know why she/he didn't say it on the thread - clearly not much of a filter there anyway!

Given the "labour are c*s" part of loops post, I don't think he/she is part of the "slim Jim brigade" jackie.

chocoluvva · 01/05/2015 09:29

Chances of a lab/lib-dem coalition?

Lab/lib-dem/green/plaid coalition?

Maybe loop is George Galloway?

BakewellSlice · 01/05/2015 09:45

Or Katie fullo'bile whatsername masquerading as a Scot?

I thought NC last night exemplified a point about the Scottish identity, she is the most "normal" seeming of the leaders. There is less of an obvious class / behavioural divide between Scottish politicians and their electorate.

OOAOML · 01/05/2015 09:54

Good call Bakewell. Although she did star some letters in her sweary words, and I think Katie Hopkins would just go for it.

I think Labour should be doing much more playing up of her statement that she would leave the country if Miliband were PM - they could just play that on a loop for the next week.

AuntieDee · 01/05/2015 10:41

I suppose it's just like someone from Texas calling themselves Texan. They're still American but have further identity. People from Manchester call themselves Mancinians, from London, Londoners.

England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales are just like the states in America? I am English but consider my nationality to be British. Calling yourself English tends to have negative connotations IME whereas for the other parts of the kingdom it attracts patriotism.

AuntieDee · 01/05/2015 10:42

Eek hadn't realised the thread had been derailed from the OP. Bad me for not RTFT!!

BakewellSlice · 01/05/2015 11:05

I was born in England but would call myself British if abroad or just say I live in Scotland, although my primary identity is probably that of the city I grew up in.

BakewellSlice · 01/05/2015 11:08

Oh I didn't report that deleted comment aimed at me; ! laughed at it- I think abusive people with "issues" should not be allowed the protective cloak of deletion.

BakewellSlice · 01/05/2015 11:12

I didn't report that comment directed at me. I was happy to laugh at it.

BakewellSlice · 01/05/2015 11:12

Posting problems.

OOAOML · 01/05/2015 11:13

Don't worry AuntieDee we're having a fairly wide-ranging discussion here Wink

I think identity can be quite varied and fluid - at various time you might feel more one thing than another. And your official nationality might not necessarily be your identity.

It is a shame that you mention negative connotations of Englishness. People should be free to say they are English, have a flag etc without it being linked with the more negative sides of nationalism. I have heard talk about 'reclaiming the flag' from groups like the EDL.

OOAOML · 01/05/2015 11:15

loop seems to have gone away - school? off to admire her presumably abolutely perfect beautiful appearance? Sleeping in after spending the night howling at the moon?

TheNewStatesman · 01/05/2015 11:22

The Scottish education system seems in danger of tumbling down a rabbit hole.

The CforE sounds like a wet woolly mess.
The changeover has been chaotic and teachers have complained that nobody knows what on earth they are supposed to be doing.
Parochialism and way way way too much focus on Scotland alone esp. in history.
SNP seems unwilling to listen to any criticism.

It's a real pity, because historically Scotland has had a good education system--better than England's, I would say.

TheNewStatesman · 01/05/2015 11:23

There has already been a significant fall in reading and maths scores for the kids who have been through the CforE.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 01/05/2015 11:30

It is unclear (according to article I read) whether the falling standards are due to the CfE or the cuts in education budgets (bigger class sizes etc).

I don't think CfE has been going long enough to draw any conclusions?
