Why are there so few Tall Sections in women's shops?

goldylookingpane · 09/04/2015 19:09

I see lots of Plus-Size Sections and Petite Sections as well as Regular, but very few shops now have a Tall Section.
And what there is in 'Tall' is completely shapeless. I'm tall, but also have a small waist and decent sized hips. I want shaped clothes that go in and out and emphasize my shape, not shapeless things that hang. Which seems to make up the bulk of clothes you find in Tall.

In Next, none of their nipped-in-waist style blouses and jackets are featured in their Tall Catalog, only shapeless, loose-fitting rubbish (oh I forgot to say -they don't even have the actual tall clothes in any of their shops).
Unlike Petite! There's a whole range for them (and why isn't Petite called 'Short' Hmm Why do they get the 'naice' name?) Hmm
But that's a whole other argument.

Somebody did a survey on here once, and there were a LOT of ladies 5'8 and over.
And people are being born bigger and taller. So why are we not being catered for?

At the moment there is only LTS and possibly one or two other shops, that seem to cater mainly for 20 -30 year olds.
So there is definitely a fantastic 'opening' in the market for some clever person (with money) to make a killing and clean up.

How do other tall ladies find the whole shopping experience?

I forgot to say, a lot of shops have a 'long' section in trousers, but that's not the same.

YANBU - DD is 5'9 with a 36" inside leg. She finds buying clothes a nightmare. Only about 5 choices in Top Shop and "tall" in must other shops equates to a 34" leg.

MollyMaDurga · 09/04/2015 19:20

I live in rural Scotland, it is impossible i tell you. I buy stuff when we are away. Asda was surprisingly good for trousers actually, cheap and extra long. I've got 34 inch legs and they fit! LTS is frumpy. ..i got a pair of velvet trousers from a charity shop once, that was lucky but i wouldn't pay more for it.

MerdeAlor · 09/04/2015 19:22

I'm 6 foot, since discovering internet shopping my life has changed for the better. ASOS tall is fantastic and much of it would suit your figure.
Tall Girls is pretty good too.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 09/04/2015 19:24

It's better than it was, I think, because at least you can order online now although it would be better to try stuff on. Agree it's not just trousers that are the issue, I have arms like an orang utan so coats and jackets are also a problem. And don't get me started on shoes.

mrsdavidbowie · 09/04/2015 19:26

Totally agree .
I'm six feet and its a nightmare.
Just bought a nice fitted maxi from Tall girls.
Loathe LTS.

senrensareta · 09/04/2015 19:28

I think any "minority" are ill catered for. I agree that taller women are ignored as my DD who is only 5'7" struggles with skirts and trousers.

Interestingly you think there is a lot of plus size stuff but as a humungous size myself I can promise you there is not. Some places like M&S make a few bigger sizes but they are not designed properly, just things designed for smaller women made wider so they do not fit well. Some do just a few lines up to bigger sizes but you have to look through the whole place to find them (supermarkets, department stores and M&S I'm looking at you!)

In my nearest town Ann Harvey closed down then Evans closed so my nearest specialist shops are almost 20 miles away. America has far more niche shops, both plus size, tall, etc, I go to the USA on holiday and think I'm in shopping heaven!

ItsADinosaur · 09/04/2015 19:30

Really? I'm 5ft 2 and think they're are loads of tall sections but few petite sections! It's really hard to get decent clothes when you're short, especially anything that isn't office wear.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 09/04/2015 19:31

Lts are the only place I can buy skinny/straight leg jeans that fit me around the waist and that I can actually pull up over my thighs. I rarely buy anything else from them though.

My latest rant is tall knickers. I know it seems mad but I'm convinced the reason I can find no comfy knickers is because I'm tall
Think about it. Tall people might need longer gusset lengths. If you were to measure a tall woman from her belly button through her legs and up to her tailbone that measurement is going to be longer than on a short woman.
I am so fed up of wearing 'big pants' because all others try to hide up my arse.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 09/04/2015 19:33

Goody- perhaps we should share any gems we find as I am also small waisted and wide hipped. (I look big face on but am thin in profile)

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 09/04/2015 19:34

Goldy, sorry you got autocorrected and I didn't notice

MorrisZapp · 09/04/2015 19:35

I'm average height but in fashion terms I'm a short arse. When I hold up a maxi dress to my five foot three height, it's comical.

Most fashion stores cut naturally for taller women. Even a 'regular' leg length would put you at taller than average.

I don't even enter Top Shop or Zara. Made for giraffes.

goldylookingpane · 09/04/2015 19:36

TheWoman,
Interesting point about the knickers!

It'sADinosaur, I'm sure there are more petite sections. I could be wrong.

Hadn't heard of tall girls so went on the site and they had the cuffed trousers my daughter wanted in a 36" - I've e mailed her the link although they're quite pricey on student budget

goldylookingpane · 09/04/2015 19:39

If only we all (short or tall) had the money to have ALL our clothes hand-made.
Everything would fit perfectly. Imagine an item with a waist, that actually sits ON the waist!

mrsdavidbowie · 09/04/2015 19:40

At least if you're short you can shorten trousers .
DPs no longer do tall.
Next and New Look only online...and NL quality is rubbish.
Topshop Tall is actually not that long.
And as for swimsuits and sportswear....

18yearstooold · 09/04/2015 19:41

Dorothy Perkins used to have a tall range in store but they've taken it out!!!

I'm a size smaller in tall ranges so I wish more places did it!

Very is pretty good for trousers but I do struggle with tops and jackets

I don't actually own a coat because I've not found one for years with long enough sleeves

Sigh

goldylookingpane · 09/04/2015 19:41

This is true, mrsdavid,
You can take material away, but you can't add it.

OP posts:
littlebillie · 09/04/2015 19:45

Don't even mention shoes!

Charlieboo30 · 09/04/2015 19:45

YANBU! Lots of places do 'long' trousers and it's laughable. 34' is not long when you have 36' legs.

I love DP (they do their tall range online). Free delivery and returns to store. Not keen on new look (quality terrible and God forbid that you might be tall and a larger size in trousers).

mrsdavidbowie · 09/04/2015 19:48

No tall range online at DPs any more charlie

foxtrotcharlie · 09/04/2015 19:52

I need tall knickers in my life. Please can someone invent them!

ClinkLady · 09/04/2015 19:53

I think it's because supposedly "normal" ranges are more geared towards the taller than average woman anyway

eg, a five foot two woman is catered for by petite or short ranges but that is only two, maybe three inches shorter than average. A five foot 7 woman deviates from the average by the same amount but is catered for by the normal range.

So that's why. Imo. The normal range is biased towards women who are a bit taller than average.

goldylookingpane · 09/04/2015 19:59

I wonder whether a lot of the decisions to close down the tall sections is to do with cost.
They have to charge the same price whether the item of clothing is regular, petite or tall.
Mmore material goes into making a tall garment, more than regular and petite, so it's costing them more to make, maybe.

But if that's the case, why add extra Plus-Size sections to a lot of shops? A plus-size garment costs the same as Regular. So that contradicts that theory. Confused
