Why are there so few Tall Sections in women's shops?

goldylookingpane · 09/04/2015 19:09

I see lots of Plus-Size Sections and Petite Sections as well as Regular, but very few shops now have a Tall Section.
And what there is in 'Tall' is completely shapeless. I'm tall, but also have a small waist and decent sized hips. I want shaped clothes that go in and out and emphasize my shape, not shapeless things that hang. Which seems to make up the bulk of clothes you find in Tall.

In Next, none of their nipped-in-waist style blouses and jackets are featured in their Tall Catalog, only shapeless, loose-fitting rubbish (oh I forgot to say -they don't even have the actual tall clothes in any of their shops).
Unlike Petite! There's a whole range for them (and why isn't Petite called 'Short' Hmm Why do they get the 'naice' name?) Hmm
But that's a whole other argument.

Somebody did a survey on here once, and there were a LOT of ladies 5'8 and over.
And people are being born bigger and taller. So why are we not being catered for?

At the moment there is only LTS and possibly one or two other shops, that seem to cater mainly for 20 -30 year olds.
So there is definitely a fantastic 'opening' in the market for some clever person (with money) to make a killing and clean up.

How do other tall ladies find the whole shopping experience?

Jigsaw trousers - I'm 5'7" and a 34 inch leg generally works best for me (and highlights what a nightmare it must be for proper tall people!). Jigsaw trousers are always masses too long. No idea what the range of their accompanying proportions is like though.

BikeRunSki · 15/04/2015 20:52

That's a bummer SirVix. They must have reduced their range, because I have had a DD tall costume from them in the past. Bastards!

I recently got a non-special Zoggs one piece swimming costume from TKMaxx, I'm 169 cm high, 169 cm round crotch-shoulder-crotch and a size 14, 32E bust. The Zoggs costume (size 14) fits perfectly.

BikeRunSki · 15/04/2015 20:52

Sorry, the Zoggs costume has boob cups.

mytitiferssungtheirsong · 15/04/2015 21:08

6 ft, 36" legs and size 18 here! I find I end up buying shorter jeans and wearing them in boots in the winter so no-one can tell and turning them up in the summer.

When I was pregnant I wore mostly nl mat jeans but got some amazing ones from polarn o pyret that were superlong!

SilverHawk · 15/04/2015 21:09

How have you measured that? My tape only goes to 60 inches.

SilverHawk · 15/04/2015 21:14

SirVix a few years ago I bought a Lands End swimsuit from the States. Yes, I had to pay duty but it wasn't available in this country.
It's been worth it as I knew exactly what I wanted.

Owllady · 15/04/2015 21:18

I'm 5 9 (almost 10 lol) and I find the same
I actually feel humongous when I try things on in my own side
Like a man :( all arms and legs hanging out. It's like being Back at school!

SilverHawk · 15/04/2015 21:27

I seem to be 178cm round crotch/shoulder and 175 in height. Does this mean middle aged spread?

SirVixofVixHall · 15/04/2015 21:35

I contacted Lands End in the States as there are none on the website at the moment, and they confirmed that no, they do tall, or busty, but have no tall suits above a D cup. They do one suit, the tank style, in a tall D, but no bigger. I would look horrible in that style and I'm a 28H bra so I think I'd need the DDD cup anyway.

BikeRunSki · 15/04/2015 21:47

I have a 50m tape measure for work!

According to Land's End (boo-hiss) website, "long bodied" is where your crotch-shoulder-crotch distance is the same as, or more than, your height.

Thinking about it, my LE swimming costumer may have been a D cup. I used to be smaller! (But not shorter, no since I was 12 anyway).

SirVixofVixHall · 15/04/2015 21:51

I like Landsend generally, as they do slim fit swimsuits for children and I have very slender dds so they are great. And their customer service is so good. I mainly buy from the US site but sometimes the UK one. But sadly with the swimsuits there is no joy. Sad.

Passthecake30 · 15/04/2015 22:34

I've bought this

www.longtallsally.com/p/tall/active-racer-back-swimsuit-12J16#12J16BLA

which has a bit of bust support

and this

www.longtallsally.com/p/tall/crochet-halterneck-tankini-12J17#12J17AQU

which gives amazing omph to my 30ff (and size 12/6ft frame)

I find that anything other than LTS goes up my bum.

OopTheShard · 16/04/2015 09:13

I sometimes have success with sizing up with swimwear in 'normal shops' but its very hit and miss. I got a size up in a nice swimsuit in Primark recently...it fits quite quite well, but I had to try on about 20 different ones in maybe 8 different shops before I could find on that wasnt ridiculously short in the body. So frsutrating.

M&S used to do longer length swimsuits, but hasnt had them the last two years.

There is a definite problem with the few tall ranges that there are catering for 'model' shapes - straight up and down, young etc. You arent allowed to be tall and have a womanly shape. Pisses me off.

Sheitgeist · 16/04/2015 09:53

This thread is giving me the rage this morning, and I'm not as tall as most of you!
The most annoying thing is that provision for tall people has got WORSE not better: I used to be able to buy longer length swimming costumes very easily (in Debenhams and Marks) now they seem to no longer exist, so I wear tankini and shorts !

The cut of NEXT clothes used to be much longer.

I'm 'only' 5'8 , but very long in the body and would just love to have a nice fitted dress, that, well, fits! Oh and that is not super short.

Ditto to the 'rise' problem. I buy per una 'roma' fit trousers, which fit my shape and 'rise' but even the longer length would probably be too short for many of you here; its fine for me as my legs are average length!

OopTheShard · 16/04/2015 10:45

Sheitgeist...I have the rage, too.

My worst rage is re: dresses. It is almost impossible to get a knee length or just below knee length work dress or summer dress if you are six ft tall Sad. I am reduced to the one or two grim styles Next or LTS produce each year.

What late thirties woman wants to get half her thigh out for work? FFS.

Its ridiculous, really. My three best friends are 5'11, 5'10 and 5'8. My sister is 5'10. I am 6ft. We exist, there are quite a few of us....whats the problem her?!

Retailers, listen up!!! I have money. I want to buy clothes. Make some for me, for the love of GOD!!!!!!

I have chubby little knees , I hate "knee length" skirts and dresses that are above the knee to start with, and then like a wee mini when I sit down. I hate too short t-shirts too. When you are tall and busty the bust takes up some of the fabric and means that a longer length is really essential. I'm wearing a Boden top today, this one www.boden.co.uk/en-GB/Womens-Tops-T-shirts/3_4-Sleeved-Tops/WL713/Womens-Lightweight-Boatneck.html I have the 12 , the 10 would have been better though, as it is roomy in the body- I couldn't be bothered to exchange it. In this size it is a little bit longer on me than the one on the model. So it probably increases in length as it gets bigger, she is probably in the 6 or 8. I wish more websites would put the height of the model and the size of the garment as details next to the picture. Some do, and I find it really helpful when trying to work out if something would fit.

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 16/04/2015 19:08

I went shopping for tops today. LOL. Except not funny. Everything in a size 8 was about three inches long, and about 55 inches wide.

pinkrocker · 16/04/2015 22:27

LTS used to use real models in their catalogue so you could see them on a real person, so you could see how the clothes really hung. The models they use now are nowhere near tall enough!

romina · 17/04/2015 18:08

What I find even stranger than the lack of clothes for tall women is that in many stores, if you're tall you have to be slimmer than if you're shorter.
Next, for example- up to a 22 in a regular, only up to an 18 if you're tall (or even an XL length trouser for that matter).
How does that work??

If you're tall and large (I'm a 20 and 5ft 11) there is hardly anything to wear...

Orangeanddemons · 17/04/2015 18:20

Don't understand that either. In the dim dark past, when I was learning pattern cutting, the general rule of thumb, was the taller the person was, the bigger they were likely to be

SirVixofVixHall · 17/04/2015 19:51

I think we need a mass Mumsnet shopping trip to Denmark, Sweden or the Netherlands.

goldylookingpane · 17/04/2015 23:59

At least the waists on trousers are really high this year.
So the tops that are a little too short aren't too noticeable with a high waisted pair of jeans/trousers.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 18/04/2015 11:12

I tried on a pair of long leggings in primary. Couldn't even get my foot through the ankle. To make them longer they had just kept going with the leg shape so it carried on tapering in to a point.

spookyskeleton · 18/04/2015 12:08

Just been looking at M&S website and they have a few long length swimsuits, including some in nice patterns Smile
