Why are there so few Tall Sections in women's shops?

goldylookingpane · 09/04/2015 19:09

I see lots of Plus-Size Sections and Petite Sections as well as Regular, but very few shops now have a Tall Section.
And what there is in 'Tall' is completely shapeless. I'm tall, but also have a small waist and decent sized hips. I want shaped clothes that go in and out and emphasize my shape, not shapeless things that hang. Which seems to make up the bulk of clothes you find in Tall.

In Next, none of their nipped-in-waist style blouses and jackets are featured in their Tall Catalog, only shapeless, loose-fitting rubbish (oh I forgot to say -they don't even have the actual tall clothes in any of their shops).
Unlike Petite! There's a whole range for them (and why isn't Petite called 'Short' Hmm Why do they get the 'naice' name?) Hmm
But that's a whole other argument.

Somebody did a survey on here once, and there were a LOT of ladies 5'8 and over.
And people are being born bigger and taller. So why are we not being catered for?

At the moment there is only LTS and possibly one or two other shops, that seem to cater mainly for 20 -30 year olds.
So there is definitely a fantastic 'opening' in the market for some clever person (with money) to make a killing and clean up.

How do other tall ladies find the whole shopping experience?

Agree Llama about tall trousers/jeans - they need to be cut with extra length from the crotch to the waistband but rarely are.

Now that higher waist styles are in fashion I find buying a decent fitting pair of jeans easier, when everything was low waist it was a nightmare!

I am not excessively tall but have a long torso so find it hard to find things that fit well on both the waist and hips

MehsMum · 09/04/2015 21:01

Agreed, Goldy. Bought this East top in the sale...I make a beeline there, between Xmas and New Year, every time!
Don't like LTS...
Have never found a single pair of cheap jeans to fit me (I'm not hugely tall except to my midget in-laws but I need a long waist AND a long inside leg).

Re maternity/breastfeeding clothes, I ended up making some of my own, I was that desperate.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 09/04/2015 21:20

I've just realised why my pants don't fit!

Tall knickers must be a thing.

I buy men's jeans.

IHeartKingThistle · 09/04/2015 22:33

I'm 5'9.5" - my legs are only 32" but my torso is ridiculously long. So sick of waistbands under my boobs. Also shift dresses or similar where my arse sits about 12 inches below the bit of the dress it's supposed to sit in Sad Angry Grin IT'S NOT MY ARSE, IT'S THE DRESS!!!

I did get a lovely slinky dress from New Look Tall the other day though. I couldn't believe it fitted.

HerdofAntilop · 09/04/2015 23:09

I am 6ft, size 18 and pregnant. Pretty much resigned to having to get a tent taken in if I want anything to fit for the next 23 weeks. At least I have my peacocks maternity leggings. And don't get me started on shoe sizes. Since when has a 42 been a size 7 or 8? I'm looking at you Amazon...

pinkrocker · 09/04/2015 23:24

I like LTS. There I've said it. Their range fits me! But it's frumpy.

I also love New Look Tall, that fits me too. The new "Bengaline" trousers are gorgeous. Tall range is limited though.

Top Shop tall is great, but again a limited range...but I'm a size smaller there Smile

DP Tall is, however, imho crap. Horrible fabrics and hard to see what they might look like on.
Only thing is, everything I buy at full price from LTS always has a fault in it. Clicks in jumpers, pattern skewed, even holes!

So I now buy second-hand! There's a Facebook group called Long Tall Sally Trade (or something like that) which is fantastic, I've had some lovely tall clothes (not just LTS) from there recently.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 09/04/2015 23:33

I'm going to find this lts fb group

pinkrocker · 09/04/2015 23:36
Smile its Long Tall Sally Buy/Sell/ Trade
afussyphase · 09/04/2015 23:45

I once (oops) gave my details to LTS and they do insist on sending their catalogue. Constantly. I know everyone on here says they are frumpy (except pinkrocker! thanks :) ) but I have a few things from there and I end up wearing them quite a bit because, well, they fit. The sleeves are long enough, the trousers don't slide down because they are long enough from crotch to waist, and the sleeves go all the way to my wrists. Crazy. I'm only 5'10".
I might go back for some jeans that fit. I do think they try to have something for everything -- work, formal, casual, young (though not terribly) and "older" or more conservative (which MN may be reading as "frumpy"?), so we will all find stuff we hate in there. But I've found a few things I like too.
I'll try Asos though, now you've all recommended it. Is there a shop with the tall range or do you all order it?

itsveryyou · 09/04/2015 23:45

I live in the USA currently and there are quite a lot of online options for us taller people, but even over here, where I do seem to see more tall (say, above 5ft 10) people than back home, not many stores offer in-store tall lines. Lands End and Old Navy are pretty good as their clothes are proportionately longer across the whole body, not just longer in the leg like a lot of brands tend to be. Gap also do a good tall range here, but again, only online.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 09/04/2015 23:53

Thanks pinkrocker, I've put in my request

idontknowmyusernameanymore · 10/04/2015 00:20

Dorothy perkins still do tall! Smile they have some tall stuff in certain stores and all of the range online.

goldylookingpane · 10/04/2015 00:31

LTS aren't as frumpy as they used to be. I have a few of their clothes. But they're a bit too pricey for me to be able to buy all my clothes there. And I've had hassle sending things back and requesting different sizes. They have Cancelled orders instead of sending me a different size. That sort of thing. They are very quick and helpful to put things right though. Will give them that.
And their sizings are HUGE! I'm a 12/14 in most shops but at LTS I usually need an extra small. It's crazy.

GlitterBelle · 10/04/2015 01:39

I'm tall and plus size. There's pretty much nothing, even if you find an item in one section, you don't get both.

I also struggle with shoes, as I have long feet. So no clothing item is bloody easy for me.

ShowMeYourTARDIS · 10/04/2015 02:17

I'm 5'8", and with very long arms and legs. Shirts NEVER come all the way down to my wrists. I can find tall/long trousers okay, but never shirts.

PurpleShoes69 · 10/04/2015 02:23

Agree with the shorter posters, it's not all rosy for us either.
I hate the 'petite' designation, so twee, would rather it was just called short tbh.

JassyRadlett · 10/04/2015 02:53

Boden do long lengths but mostly just seem to tack extra fabric onto the bottom rather than thinking 'Hmm, this tall person might have a longer torso too. Maybe she doesn't want the waistline squashing her boobs?'

It's grim out there. I'm Australian where they seem to cut for taller people better; I find UK shopping difficult and have pretty much stopped wearing dresses as they are cut so short.

SnowPetrel · 10/04/2015 03:47

5"11 here & agree that the lack of choice for tall women is disgraceful. I do buy LTS sometimes but usually in the sale as it's v pricey & I don't see why I should have to spend a lot more on clothes than those of average height. Also DP & New Look. On the plus side I don't fritter away a lot of my salary on clothes as I know I can't browse most of the stuff in shops as it's not going to fit. When i do get things (often online now) I try to buy "timeless" things that are not going to go out of fashion in 5 mins so as to avoid the headache of having to regularly find stuff to wear by buying unseen on Tall sites online.

SnowPetrel · 10/04/2015 03:51

PS Also have the broad hips/small waist thing which has been mentioned above going on- maybe it's a tall thing. And yes it does make me look big face on but slim from the side. Feel like Flat Stanley!!

MooMaid · 10/04/2015 03:56

Oh how I've struggled to find good tall maternity clothes. Next have skinny maternity jeans - I did not feel skinny anything in pregnancy Angry

DD is now 5 weeks old and I have nothing to wear and cannot find jeans to fit as I'm not my regular size. Very disheartening

SnowPetrel · 10/04/2015 03:59

PPS Think LTS has got a little better of late but I did used to get v disheartened looking through & finding nothing to my taste (e.g. paisley AND frills AND line of decorative buttons all-on-the-same-top, anyone??)

MinesAPintOfTea · 10/04/2015 04:08

All I want is flattering cotton work dresses. Lts is all polyester. Dp is usually ok, but this summer their range has all the "holes" that are currently fashionable. I work in an engineering-type field, when i'm in a meeting with a load of men I don't want cheeky holes in my dresses.

CheeseEMouse · 10/04/2015 04:20

Randomly for tall maternity jeans (I am 6'2", 36" leg and 38+ weeks) mamas and papas tall jeans have been great and I have lived in them.

In general with jeans shopping I hate it and last time I needed (non-maternity) jeans I went to Gap and found someone to help and basically asked for help something that fitted. Amazingly she found me some jeans. I stick to skirts for work : I have no smart trousers at all.

yallahabibi · 10/04/2015 05:08

Being tall all over means an empire line on me is nipple level , I always cut off waist belts as the hit empire line and all my sleeves are 3/4 which is a pain in winter climes.
Typically I buy 2 sizes up on ebay and get a cheap tailor to run dresses in but it's annoying.
There are hardly any non frumpy dresses that hit under the knee (which will be above knee on me ) and often stuff I order online turns out to barely cover my bum.

UngratefulMoo · 10/04/2015 05:57

Agree! I'm 6ft and have managed to find a couple of decent pairs of trousers in Phase 8, but my main problem is that nothing fitted is ever long enough - waist under my bust, extra fabric cut for hips but around my waist then too tight over my bum and far too short! I dream of being able to wear a nice fitted dress. If you are feeling very flush, Ghost is cut for tall women. I am not feeling very flush, so I'm off to check out Asos Tall....
