Why are there so few Tall Sections in women's shops?

goldylookingpane · 09/04/2015 19:09

I see lots of Plus-Size Sections and Petite Sections as well as Regular, but very few shops now have a Tall Section.
And what there is in 'Tall' is completely shapeless. I'm tall, but also have a small waist and decent sized hips. I want shaped clothes that go in and out and emphasize my shape, not shapeless things that hang. Which seems to make up the bulk of clothes you find in Tall.

In Next, none of their nipped-in-waist style blouses and jackets are featured in their Tall Catalog, only shapeless, loose-fitting rubbish (oh I forgot to say -they don't even have the actual tall clothes in any of their shops).
Unlike Petite! There's a whole range for them (and why isn't Petite called 'Short' Hmm Why do they get the 'naice' name?) Hmm
But that's a whole other argument.

Somebody did a survey on here once, and there were a LOT of ladies 5'8 and over.
And people are being born bigger and taller. So why are we not being catered for?

At the moment there is only LTS and possibly one or two other shops, that seem to cater mainly for 20 -30 year olds.
So there is definitely a fantastic 'opening' in the market for some clever person (with money) to make a killing and clean up.

How do other tall ladies find the whole shopping experience?

Dancinghat I gave up and didn't have any maternity clothes. I just used those waistband extenders, bump bands and any elastic aged was it stuff I had and felt like a frump.

hennybeans · 13/04/2015 20:21

For mat clothes I bought a lot of dresses from Mothercare which were either maxi that happened to be long enough (!), or shorter dresses that ended above knee but worn with leggings. I almost never wear trousers, pregnant or otherwise, as I'm a bigger size and tall so never find any that fit nicely.

Orangeanddemons · 13/04/2015 20:32

Buy the problem with Boden dresses, is they are cut for people who are short waisted. So even the longer length ones have waistlines round the boobs.

In fact the fit on Boden dresses is terrible, but that's a whole other thread.

Trills · 13/04/2015 20:35

I'm 5'7 (not notably tall!) and most dresses that are not from a tall range have the waist in the wrong place, and/or are much shorter than I think they were designed to be.

Passthecake30 · 13/04/2015 20:43

6ft with a 36"leg here, most of my clothes come from next and LTS (I like their jeans and stretch cotton shirts and have to wear their swimwear or get a wedgie). I've stopped shopping in actual shops as I get fed up.

Off to look at asos!

When I was pregnant I lived in noppies and rg maternity clothes, just a couple of basics, and then sold on ebay. Also got size 18 vests from new look (I'm a 10-12) and they were fab for layering when things didn't quite fit. If I was pregnant now however, I'd probably wear dresses as smock tops and leggings. ..

OMGmetoo · 13/04/2015 20:56

TheWomanTheyCallJayne, that bit of you is called the "rise", aka low/high rise jeans.

I am 5'8" but have the torso (waist to shoulders) and legs of a 5'5" person meaning I've got an extra 3" in my rise.

Tis a right pain. I have had good luck with high-leg pants from Sainsbos.

I often resort to making my own clothes, though!

OMGmetoo · 13/04/2015 21:12

Oh, and as a dressmaker I bet I know the real reason why dresses are so short - fabric is very expensive and skirts take up an awful lot of it...!

Joke's on them, I just won't buy them!

SilverHawk · 13/04/2015 21:48

I used to love Jackpot. I didn't know that they still existed.
Primarni mens' Ts were quite good a couple of years ago, 100% cotton and much better quality than the womens'. The neckline may be high but I have to hide from the sun. I'm sure they do V necks.
WRT average British height. I feel like a giant when I visit my DP's town. Everyone seems shoulder height. It's like being back in the SE Asia.
However, in large cities, people seem to be taller especially the youngsters. Or, it's only the taller people that are out and about.

OopTheShard · 13/04/2015 21:49

I hate Boden dresses! I wore them for about five years in a row, as they are the only place I could find knee length/just below knee summer dresses, but by GOD they are frumpy.

Realised last year that I age five years when I put one on. So sod them this year. I have ordered the plain navy maxi from them and thats it. They just do nothing for my shape (tall hourglass).

Means I may have to give up on summer dress this year, though, as Next's range is FOUL and LTS is dreary and very expensive for what it is.

Hmpppph.

Orangeanddemons · 13/04/2015 21:50

But they manage to produce loads of hideous maxi dresses, so it can't just be costSad

goldylookingpane · 14/04/2015 09:53

orange,
maxi dresses are easier for them to make. They don't have to make any effort toadd any shape to the waist or anything.
It's one long shapeless sack. Cheap and easy for them and probably less skill involved.

OMG- of course it is, thank you. I hadn't clicked.

Im not very good at sewing but recently I found a maxi skirt that fit perfectly that I could actually make myself so have made a pattern from it. Fabric is expensive (which I guess it should be) though so haven't started yet. Bit nervous because I think it's going to cost me over £20 just for the fabric and I'm scared I'll fuck it up

OMGmetoo · 14/04/2015 14:23

The hideous maxi dresses are all in hideous, cheap fabric. And yes, almost no seams.

Jayne- use an old bedsheet to try out the pattern before you cut into your expensive fabric. :)

spookyskeleton · 14/04/2015 21:35

Back to my men's T-shirt report if anyone is still reading this Grin

I bought some XL ones today as I was passing Next - they only do the V-neck ones in slim fit. They are almost perfect Smile They fit well in a slouchy way (which is what I wanted), no obvious issues around the boob area with it not being cut for boobs. It hangs well. Most importantly, it covers just past my crotch so length is good. And they come in about 10 different colours and are 3 for £15...what more do you need??

goodasitgets · 14/04/2015 22:44

Two things I've bought recently
Vest tops from matalan - the thick strap ones. V long, stretchy and cheap
A maxi dress from boohoo. Crap fabric but anything that fits me with 34K bust at 5ft 10 and a bit...for £20

SirVixofVixHall · 14/04/2015 22:52

I have struggled in vain to find a tall swimsuit that is also fine for a big cup size. Tall and busty? Not allowed it seems. I am another who would like tall knickers! I so agree with that. In M+S the knickers get deeper at the sides as the sizes go up, so I size up for them to be comfortable. Must be very annoying if you are small though. I'm not even all that tall, I'm five eight.

BikeRunSki · 15/04/2015 00:35

SirVix try Land's End for a swimsuit.

spookyskeleton · 15/04/2015 04:36

Swimsuits are a nightmare as are tankinis where the top and bottoms don't meet!

OopTheShard · 15/04/2015 09:14

Swimsuits are SO hard to find, I agree. I'm 6ft with saggy 34DD boobs and need support. I cant do Speedo style, flimsy halterneck or those ridiculous ones that are slashed in a deep v down your cleavage with no support.

Its like trying to find a unicorn.

goldylookingpane · 15/04/2015 15:29

Yes to tall knickers! Grin

They all seem to look so cheap and nasty.
Probably because they are.

There's a shop in my area that springs up every summer and disappears before the summer's over.
They have rail upon rail of maxi dresses - for £5 each! Yes, £5. Hmm

spookyskeleton · 15/04/2015 16:01

goldy I bet those dresses are very classy Wink

SirVixofVixHall · 15/04/2015 19:48

Bikerunski- Land's End do a tall fit, and a D/DD/DDD cup fit, but not both together. You have to be a c cup or below if you are tall and also want a swimsuit.
