Can somebody please explain the anti-vax argument to me?!

I keep stumbling across vaccinating vs anti-vax arguments on FB parenting pages but I'm still not getting why people are choosing not to vaccinate their children. I thought the whole autism thing was discredited and that was only referring to the combined MMR. It's obviously a very sensitive subject among mums but I feel really ignorant not knowing the other side of the argument.

to my mind it seems to come down to believing lots of psudo-science websites and relying on herd immunity

Theres a number of reasons but some I've come up against:

People wanting to live this fresh vegan lifestyle
People who still believe in that nobhead Wakefield and his false autism link
People who think 'big pharma' are out to get them
People who are like BUT THEY CONTAIN POISONSZZZ

I am as anti anti-vax as they come, but it is worth pointing out that some children aren't vaccinated because of allergies etc. So amongst the group of unvaccinated population are some perfectly intelligent un-woo people!

All the more reason for anyone else to be vaccinated though - to keep herd immunity etc.

There isn't an anti-vax argument as arguments require logic. There are a load if people making unfounded statements against vaccination, nothing more. Makes me very cross.

There are lots of reasons, many people don't vaccinate due to previous reactions or other medical problems.

I am very much pro vaccine but do fully understand why some people make the decision not to vaccinate (others I respect their decision but don't always agree with their logic!)

Elmer you are right - some children cannot be vaccinated. This is a separate issue from anti-vax idiots people who disagree with the principle whilst relying on others getting vaccinated to protect their little darlings.

I'm just going to sit here, I've always been a bit curious why some people won't. Looking forward to see if you get any answers with some strength behind them!

Duh, I thought this was a thread about vacuum cleaners.

People in Italy have won compensation for vaccine damage. I think it's all very far from as certain as we are led to believe.

We have a family friend whose DS was left severely and permanently disabled after the jabs; I'm wary.

Incidentally, I don't have a vacuum cleaner because the only carpet we have is on our stairs. I know not everyone is suitable for flu jabs, e.g. if they're allergic to egg white. Until DD was well over a year I thought it was just a given that people got the MMR jab.

There are many parents out there including several who post here who believe that their child was damaged by vaccines and who have chosen not to vaccinate subsequently, none of those parents to my knowledge have ever been asked to take part in any study bar the mother who was part of the original Wakefield 12, have a read some.

For what it's worth I think vaccines are safe for the vast majority.

well of course some children can't have SOME vax's for medical reasons ...I don't think the OP was about that - more the adults choice not to vaccinate their children at all

my children have had the vaccinations even thought they have allergies. we have also had flu jabs.

I am pretty much for jabs having seen results of non vaccination in my family.

DH had to go to court to get an order for his DS to be vaccinated. His ex's arguments against were as follows;

they are not vegetarian
they are full of mercury (and whilst it was easy to show that they weren't, she couldn't have said why it would be a bad thing even if it were true)
they cause autism
they would overload his system
DH wasn't vaccinated (he was)
one of the diseases only affected girls so boys didn't need to have it done
catching the diseases gives you better immunity

and

they are made from minced up aborted foetuses and so it would mean injecting (DSS) with human remains of innocent, healthy babies.

Unless the child has a medical reason, the only other logic is parents like watching their children die from perfectly preventable diseases.

I also thought it was something against vax vaccum cleaners!! Was going to say that whilst I prefer a Dyson I don't think it's okay for other people to use vaxs.

What people don't seem to consider is that ALL children who can be vaccinated need to be to protect those who can't. Although I think I'm reacting to whooping cough vaccine :(
