To LOVE smokers

Honestly, I love people who smoke. They tend to be way more interesting than non smokers.

I like the way smoking smells too.

What is your opinion of posts that wish death on smokers? Things like 'I only wish smoking was more toxic to smokers' or 'it cheers me up knowing they are shortening their lives'? Posts like that crop up quite frequently on smoking threads. I used to take the time to explain that however much the poster hated smoking, statistically there are likely to be a LOT of MNers who have lost a loved one because of smoking and therefore such posts were really off. More recently I reported a post like that but it wasn't deleted so I'm wondering if those posts are fine with MN?

I threatened one poster with this once ages back. I said if you keep moaning we will all stop and they'll have to close your local hospital. :)

Seriously, I do think the 'wish you were dead/suffering' posts tells us more about the people saying it than I wanted to know.

If I suggested rounding up all the stupidest people in the country and poison them, and make them pay for the poison too, people would think I was weird. But they do it all themselves. Cool!

Plenty - not sure why the post you're talking about wasn't deleted - sounds like it was what we call beyond the pale.

OTOH if you suggested rounding up a group of people who were disproportionately poor and massively disproportionately in poor mental health and addicting them as children to something that will kill half of them, people would probably think you were a bit of an arsehole. Not cool.

Leopard, it's how the World Health Organisation portray smokers. This kind of dehumanisation filters down via public health to the general population. It's extremely relevant.

It's less about the health implications and more to do with social divisions now.

I've ran out of filters, roll ups don't taste the same without filters I can't have coffee without a cig either btw, I have to drink tea more to cut down. Tea does not taste nice

...um... that's a good thing Quiero. Judging people by their choices. It's judging people by their race/ sexuality/ sex/ etc that's bad.

I usually roll my eyes at 'I miss the old MN/'twas better in the old days' posts, but the fact you have to explain this is tongue-in-cheek is a sad indictment of MN's POness.

Smokers are addicts. That means they are addicted to nicotine, it doesn't mean they are stupid.

Do you also think that alcoholics, food addicts, other drug addicts are simply 'stupid'?

Perhaps the NHS could save billions on treating addictions if they simply told the addicts, to stop being stupid...
