Making a torte tonight, just seen what dh bought last night. I asked him for eggs and high quality dark chocolate. He managed the eggs OK but came back with g nb 70%.

I know its not awful, but it really isn't high quality stuff. Not even fairtrade and made by the same people that brought you cheese in a can.

I thought g & b was quite good quality? It's certainly expensive (to me, but I'm more of an aldi shopper so it's probably all gone over my head anyway). If I made a torte it would probably be shit

YABU. You didn't specify, green & blacks is a decent enough chocolate and it's not like he came home with a slab of dairy milk.

What difference does Fair Trade make to the quality? Cadburys Dairy Milk has a Fair Trade version, so does Kit Kat. I would not call them high quality either.

I'd say it's high quality - and I'd also assume what you meant was not eating chocolate, nor own-brand 'cooking chocolate' which don't have high enough cocoa solids.

And why do you think fairtrade has to do with quality? It's to do with how the people who make it are paid.

Your definition of "high quality" seems to be rather extended - it has to be fair trade and made by a company with a social conscience? That wouldn't automatically occur to most shoppers, and unless you made those factors quite clear, then YABU.

I just googled it the guardian says they switched to being fair trade across their range in 2011.

Also, yes G&B is high quality mainstream chocolate. If you wanted something other than Bourneville for cooking, your DP did fine.

If you wanted to demonstrate your refined palate and superior knowledge then let's have a nice cheerful Christmassy thread about the best bloody chocolate in the world.

G and B was one of the first choc companies to try fairer trade though, I'm sure they are better than nestle and Cadbury even if no fair trade label. Been eating it for years and love it above all others - only when it's on offer though. YABVU!! I'm shocked and appalled :)

I think he did quite well. I am not keen on G&B myself, for cooking I would probably get Lidl fair trade dark chocolate, it's nice and doesn't cost much. DH buys Willies chocolate from Waitrose, it's triple the price of the Lidl one, and to be honest I don't think it's worth it even if it's nice.

G&B is still high quality despite being owned by Cadburys/Kraft. Vastly better than bog standard Cadburys, which is why they bought it as a ready made stand alone brand and run it as such. Business diversity ultimately brings in more profit. It's not Valrhona, I grant you, but YABU.
