Making a torte tonight, just seen what dh bought last night. I asked him for eggs and high quality dark chocolate. He managed the eggs OK but came back with g nb 70%.

I know its not awful, but it really isn't high quality stuff. Not even fairtrade and made by the same people that brought you cheese in a can.

Aibu?

I think Green and Black chocolate is horrible. I've tried it several times, hoping it will be nice and it never is. I don't really like any of the chocolate they sell in grocery stores though. Yes, I am a chocolate snob, but why waste the calories on the horrible stuff?

Tykeisagirl · 11/11/2014 16:41

This is probably going to the thread which Netmums use to make fun of us.

KingJoffreysBloodshotEye · 11/11/2014 16:41

Mumsnet you can close now, we have reached peak middle class nonsense.

Noooo, don't close!

It's fabulous. Like watching another species.

We just need David Attenborough to wander through and discuss mating rituals. None for the OP's man after his disgraceful shopping.

BrendaBlackhead · 11/11/2014 16:42

He could have brought home a Kinnerton character advent calendar.

MonstrousRatbag · 11/11/2014 16:43

People who have strict preferences about foodstuffs (well-founded or not) and send other people to the shops to buy those foodstuffs should STATE THEIR PREFERENCES to the person going to the shop before she/he leaves. Simple.

WilburIsSomePig · 11/11/2014 16:44

Well i think its a fucking disgrace. One hates it when ones torte is shit. I bet you don't get a wink of sleep tonight after all this stress.

zippyandbungle · 11/11/2014 16:51

Really? REALLY? If you want to despair at you poor DH who has clearly not met your high standards are you my sister? fine, your marriage, but of all the wastes of typing power, why post? Some might say it makes you look a complete twat.

LaurieFairyCake · 11/11/2014 16:54

You're 'astounded by the amount of people who don't care about the quality of ingredients'

Are you totally loony?

We are talking about the difference between one type of chocolate with 70% cocoa solids and another type of chocolate with 70% cocoa solids.

No one, not even Queen Delia could tell the difference once cooked in a tart/torte

You seriously need to get the fuck over yourself because you have lost the plot entirely.

We're not talking about welfare here and battery eggs versus free range. Nor are we talking about organic versus non organic.

We're talking about 2 things that are THE SAME Hmm

ScrambledSmegs · 11/11/2014 16:55

Scraping a bean Grin

You are so having us on, OP.

says the woman who just bought 50 vanilla pods for a vair good price

squoosh · 11/11/2014 16:58

Let's all scrape our beans this evening in solidarity with poor chocolate abused OP.

ouryve · 11/11/2014 16:58

G&B has always been fair trade. One of the reasons why cadburys acquired them, back before Kraft acquired them, as they wanted to imporve their overall image.

And their dark chocolate is perfectly fine for baking, though I tend to use Sainsburys own fairtrade chocolate, as it has a better snap and a deeper flavour.

MonstrousRatbag · 11/11/2014 16:59

Can't decide whether to scrape my own bean or to get DH to do it, fnarr fnarr.

Qresident · 11/11/2014 17:05

I can't believe what I am reading.

ILovePud · 11/11/2014 17:06

I think OP is on the wind up and pulling our legs, surely Grin

FrenchJunebug · 11/11/2014 17:06

YABU you should have specified cooking chocolate and only use one with at least 85% cocoa content.

wilsonq2 · 11/11/2014 17:08

G&B has always been fair trade

No it hasn't, only maya gold was fair trade for years and cadburys were pretty ethical before they bought them.

OP posts:
fourwoodenchairs · 11/11/2014 17:09

You were not specific enough, therefore YABU.

wilsonq2 · 11/11/2014 17:10

Well I use Madagascan vanilla extract because it tastes perfectly fine.

I did say essence not extract!

OP posts:
AndyWarholsOrange · 11/11/2014 17:10

I get the butler to scrape my bean. His technique is spot on Wink

squoosh · 11/11/2014 17:11

Bit of upstairs/downstairs (release of) sexual tension, I like it Andy.

AndyWarholsOrange · 11/11/2014 17:19

I really don't know what you're talking about squoosh
OP so you use vanilla extract? I thought you said you didn't as this would be vastly inferior to scraping your bean? Confused

Pipbin · 11/11/2014 17:19

I used to know the chap who started montezumas. He started making it in a magimix.

Anyway, at least is wasn't value chocolate. G&B is perfectly fine and you are being a snob. Unless you are going to send him to some exclusive chocolate shop what do you expect? If you are going to be that precious either give clear instructions or do it yourself.

GeraldineFangedVagine · 11/11/2014 17:21

Shit torte. Sounds disgusting, I prefer chocolate myself WilburisSomePig. Grin

ScrambledSmegs · 11/11/2014 17:21

Squoosh - what was the Pepsi challenge? Was it to tell which one was Pepsi? Or to prefer Pepsi over Coca Cola? I could never work it out.

Autocorrect wants to call you Squish. Bad autocorrect.

BuckskinnedAstronaut · 11/11/2014 17:21

"try doing a taste test"

We don't have to do a taste test. We aren't answering the question "is G&B the bestest chocolate in the world ever?". We aren't doing the cooking. We aren't even (thank the heavens) doing your shopping for you.

We are merely answering the question of whether "high quality" chocolate, for the purposes of cooking, can reasonably be held to include G&B. And in our (generalised) opinion it does -- it's a 70% cocoa solids chocolate, not a bar of Dairy Milk. If you want 80%, say so. If you want [any other specific requirement], say so. Or specify a particular brand or shortlist of brands. Or do your own shopping.

And if you've not bought G&B for years then how the heck do you know what it tastes like?
