Making a torte tonight, just seen what dh bought last night. I asked him for eggs and high quality dark chocolate. He managed the eggs OK but came back with g nb 70%.

I know its not awful, but it really isn't high quality stuff. Not even fairtrade and made by the same people that brought you cheese in a can.

My current favourite is Tesco Finest Ecuadorian Single Origin 74% Dark Chocolate - I know it's Tesco and it fails the snob test but it really is rather lovely. Smile

Many a time I have sent my Dh for ingredients and he came back with everything but the thing I wanted, for a while he refused to go, now he just takes pics before he buys. I am very unreasonable when it comes to food!

ScrambledSmegs · 12/11/2014 11:08

Is that the one in the pink packet, Dancingyogi? I like that one, it's slightly fruity and spicy. It's often on special too.

ScrambledSmegs · 12/11/2014 11:10

Ah no, the one I like is the Peruvian dark chocolate. I've had the Ecuadorian one too, 'tis very nice.

cowbiscuits · 12/11/2014 11:18

This is one of the best AIBUs I've read in a while.

lurkerspeaks · 12/11/2014 11:21

OP must never eat any of my chocolate desserts (my chocolate brownies are famous...) as after much experimentation I have concluded that sainsbury's value plain chocolate works best.

I even go to sainsbury's specially to buy it as I usually shop at waitrose and their continental chocolate while good makes the brownies a little bit bitter for my admittedly unsophisticated audience of mostly children!

queenceleste · 12/11/2014 11:33

I know a young chef who worked in one of Jamie's restaurants.

He said Green and Blacks is terrible for cooking, he suggested something else which I've forgotten, but I remember he said don't touch G and B for cooking ever.

SuperFlyHigh · 12/11/2014 13:33

queen don't they get their own suppliers of chocolate, whatever sort it is?

I dated a French patisserie chef who worked for Roux Brothers (a good 15 years or more ago now!) and he made pastries but also handmade Easter eggs etc (lucky me!) - I think he said they got their own supplies in, so therefore posh choc but at trade prices and for culinary purposes.

Dancingyogi · 12/11/2014 15:26

Scrambledsmegs - will have a look out for the Peruvian...I like to stay open minded...also known as greedy bugger who'll use any excuse for a nibble. We have tried the Hotel Chocolat, £7.50 small bar of very posh chocolate, well we were on our holidays! Wink it was incredibly bitter - I'd describe it as challenging and long on the palate - too long in fact. I know my limits and that was one experience I don't wish to repeat.

Thistledew · 12/11/2014 15:38

Co-OP own brand fair trade dark chocolate works really well for baking. It is DH's secret ingredient in his fantastic chocolate brownies.

Crochetcamper · 12/11/2014 15:43

Oh dear I thought it was. Hmmm off to rethink chocolate ranking.

Dancingyogi · 12/11/2014 15:49

YY to Co Op fair trade 85% - is it made by Divine? They taste very similar.

wilsonq2 · 12/11/2014 18:29

The torte was good, but just didn't have the depth of flavour I'm used to and was a bit chalky. I tried to save it with some cocoa nibs sprinkled on top, this got it from a 7 to an 8/10. Everyone said it was amazing but it wasn't as good as normal

Thank you, I actually LOL'd at that! :o

morethanpotatoprints · 12/11/2014 19:02

I'd be happy he would pick up something like chocolate and would expect shops own for cooking.
Maybe buy it yourself next time?

Boomtownsurprise · 12/11/2014 19:06

Well....
Dh should LTB

Many reasons given above.

inabeautifulplace · 12/11/2014 20:00

I would agree that G&B quality reduced at some point after the Cadbury buyout. I have a sweet tooth so the milk was well pitched to my taste. Cadbury fucking ruined it. Bastards.

wilsonq2 · 13/11/2014 06:42

Goodness. Chocolate connaisseurs are so mysterious to me - I would be hard-pressed to detect any difference between and .

Snog · 13/11/2014 07:13

Hope dh waa suitably humiliated by the poor score OP? I think that's probably punishment enough for him not to repeat this poor performance at the shops.

I do not really eat chocolate so wouldn't know the difference between any of them tbh. But Pepsi and Coke are 2 different tastes altogether, Pepsi is disgusting. Not that I drink Coke but if I had to choose then it would be Coke all the way.

wilsonq3 · 13/11/2014 12:37

My bitter chocolate torte is pretty heqlthy actually!

calculatorsatdawn · 13/11/2014 13:00

OP you need to come out and give us your name and address so us inferior chocolate eating plebs can send flowers and other tokens of our esteem to give you the proper recognition you deserve for being;

  • socially minded
  • well off
  • a great cook
  • a social butterfly
  • an accomplished wife juggling a silly husband and housewifly duties
  • a healthy eating guru

don't hide your light under a bushell!

MelanieCheeks · 13/11/2014 13:03
