Shrieking, arm flapping and mincing.

What am I missing? I'm sure she's a lovely woman but good lawd I cannot see the appeal.

OP posts:
BOFster · 26/08/2014 18:10

She's amazing, and her influence on other musicians like PJ Harvey, Goldfrapp, Bjørk and dozens of others shows how respected she is in the industry. She's a bona fide genius.

MsAstronaut · 26/08/2014 18:11

I know people adore her and there must be something I'm missing, but I have never ever got it either. Shrieky yelping and twirling around and pouting, it's just irritating. To me her songs are overblown drama-fests. I think I just don't like that overdramatic swoony style basically.

When I was growing up in the 80s every straight male seemed to see her as the ultimate woman too and that used to irk me because I can't see it. I mean she's not a minger but that pouty lipped, wide-eyed thing just winds me up.

pouty

But I do genuinely think she must have some great talent to be so admired. It's just passed me by!

KneesoftheBee · 26/08/2014 18:12

I wouldn't even attempt to try and persuade you to like Kate but you are wrong to say all her songs are screechy. The Man with a Child in his Eyes and Breathing are two examples on non screechy songs that were big hits so I am sure you have heard of them. Perhaps you just want to goad us fans and get all our arms flapping Grin

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 26/08/2014 18:12

I love Kate Bush - well her earlier music anyway. I think I got Hmm when she started all the yea yea yoh .

She wrote a load of her material in her teens. She had a number one hit at 19 yo IIRC.

Then she went under the radar a bit, there was no scandal that I remember reading about her.

Personally, I don't think I'd want to see her now, I'll keep the memories of when I was in my teens and 20s listening to The Kick Inside.

OldFarticus · 26/08/2014 18:12

Agree Squoosh - didn't she once give an interview where she said "I don't care whether people understand me or not - it's not important."

Very Envy of anyone with tickets!

Nusalembongan · 26/08/2014 18:12

I hope the concerts are a great success, how much pressure on her! I think after 35 years there will be a lot of criticism esp regarding her looks which will have obviously changed over the years. Let's hope that she just Wows them all Smile.

Love a bit of Kate I do.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 26/08/2014 18:13

I have never understood the hype either TBH.

SelmaMacguyver · 26/08/2014 18:13

Yes you are being VVVU.

tilliebob · 26/08/2014 18:14

Well I luvs her. I think she's bloody amazing and would sell my kids on eBay if I thought I could get hold of a couple of tickets Wink.

MsAstronaut · 26/08/2014 18:15

squoosh it's because people rave about her so much you think "eh?" With most artists, obviously if it's not your thing then meh. But people really think she is a genius, a lot of people as this thread shows.

To me it's like everyone raving about Katie Melua or some such being an influential genius.

Nancy66 · 26/08/2014 18:16

I think she's fantastic but I do wonder how wise this tour is. I just hope it's not a let down

HeySoulSister · 26/08/2014 18:18

Yanbu.... Dull!

EveDallasRetd · 26/08/2014 18:19

She's a fantastically talented singer, songwriter and musician. Her voice has a range hardly ever seen these days in our female 'pop stars' and that, unusually, she has barely lost as she has aged.

She was political before it was 'cool' to be so (check out the lyrics for Army Dreamers or Experiment IV) and never sold out.

She is quirky, beautiful, natural and unusual. So much more to her than today's plastic pop princesses.

MoreCrackThanHarlem · 26/08/2014 18:19

What BOF and squoosh said.

I defy anyone to read the story of Wilhelm Reich and his son, then listen to Cloudbusting and be unmoved.

exWifebeginsat40 · 26/08/2014 18:19

i am scared of Kate Bush.

almapudden · 26/08/2014 18:19

I don't know her music beyond WH so can't comment on that, but do you really think she's beautiful? I think she's quite odd-looking, and not in a good way. controversial

noddyholder · 26/08/2014 18:19

Love her. She was the first person I saw on TOTP where I thought you can be a bit odd but fabulous at the same time! I do wonder about the number of gigs though after a long break and her well documented tendency to privacy and quiet

Owllady · 26/08/2014 18:20

She's brilliant. If you don't get it, I feel sorry for you :o

rainbowinmyroom · 26/08/2014 18:20

She's either screeching or keening. What a downer. I wouldn't pay 2 bob to see her. They should hand out wodges of cotton wool to concert goers for their bleeding ears.

DontstepontheMomeRaths · 26/08/2014 18:20

YANBU it is akin to nails on a chalkboard for me. Can't stand her voice.

TheWordFactory · 26/08/2014 18:20

Kate bush is not particularly easy to access. You have to put the work in iyswim but she pays off tremendously. ^flaps tickets around^

Nancery · 26/08/2014 18:21

Am with you OP! Yes, good dancer, probably amazing lyrics etc but to me it's just waily and prancey

OnlyLovers · 26/08/2014 18:21

YANBU. Embarrassing drama-school over-emoting, complete with floaty clobber, 'interpretative dance' and deep and meaningless lyrics.

JennyOnTheBlocks · 26/08/2014 18:22

Oh WordFactory - when are you going?

squoosh · 26/08/2014 18:24

Am appalled at Katie Melua's name being mentioned in a Kate Bush thread.

The thread feels all dirty now.
