To think apple crumble should definitely be served with custard?

Not either fresh cream or ice cream, but lovely hot warm custard. Grin

Out for a lovely meal last night and just to stuff my face more end the night perfectly I ordered apple crumble. The waitress asked me if I would like cream or ice cream with it. I wanted custard, they don't serve custard with Apple crumble, or indeed any of their puddings Shock

Outrageous! Unacceptable isn't it? Grin

YANBU I would not return to such a dodgy establishment.

Thenapoleonofcrime · 04/07/2014 10:14

No, I hate custard. So does my dd, she was mistakenly served apple crumble with custard and it was the last portion, so rather than go without she got them to scrape it off. Correctly in my opinion.

Binkyresurrected · 04/07/2014 10:14

YANBU, not at all, where was you eating? its got to be a substandard place, I wouldn't got there again.Grin

DH and I went out for a meal one time and for dessert we really really fancied bananas and custard, of course this wasn't on the menu, thankfully the waitress also fancied it, so went to the shop and made bananas and custard for us (and her) it was the best dessert ever. Sadly the restaurant has changed owners and staff, so its a treat that has never been repeated. For me that was perfect customer service.

Charlieboo30 · 04/07/2014 10:18

Hmm, I'm torn on this one. I do love fresh cream with crumble but if I go to my nanas and have homemade crumble it has to be custard. Only ever like ice cream with sticky toffee. Sticky toffee with custard is bleurgh IMO! God, I've never realised my pudding etiquette is so complicated!

Binky - banana and custard causes arguments in our house. I have my custard cold, DP insists it should be hot. Hot banana just doesn't sit right with me!

BackforGood · 04/07/2014 10:19

Wow Binky - that's over and above, isn't it Grin

Yes, I have to agree it's pretty ridiculous to offer crumble as a pudding in a pub/restaurant / cafe and then not offer custard.
Personally, I'd be prepared to eat it with a blob of ice-cream melted on top in an emergency, but it has no right to be on the menu without custard being the default option.

taxi4ballet · 04/07/2014 10:19

Custard definitely. Double cream at a push (on a really hot day) but ice cream.... NOOOOO!

Stinkle · 04/07/2014 10:21

YANBU

Only ever custard with apple crumble, never, ever anything else.

It's the law!

LastTango · 04/07/2014 10:21

Ice cream. Or cream. Or custard. In that order Smile

Binkyresurrected · 04/07/2014 10:24

Charlieboo30 Hot custard when its bananas and custard, cold custard when its a banana and custard tart. Your dessert etiquette is off slightly Grin

My DHs favourite dessert is a bowl of hot custard with nothing else in it. We have to make 2 pints for 5 people because he'll happily eat a pint of it.

OhFFSWhatsWrongNow · 04/07/2014 10:26

I've never tried custard with banana Shock.

OhFFS - you have not lived.

OhFFSWhatsWrongNow · 04/07/2014 10:32

echt I fear I haven't! Must pick up some custard and banana later and live a little Grin

YABVU. ice cream is the only acceptable accompaniment to crumble!

FraidyCat · 04/07/2014 10:33

I'd be glad to have any of the three. DW doesn't understand the need for any of them, and as she is in charge of getting food, I go without, unless I make my own custard. (Which I do.)

TortoiseUpATreeAgain · 04/07/2014 10:34

Ice cream is acceptable on crumble but custard should definitely be an option. Cream is just wrong; you could never really trust someone who put cream on apple crumble .

OhFFSWhatsWrongNow · 04/07/2014 10:34

fraidy you mean you have dry crumble on it's own? That's an abomination, I say! Grin

OP posts:
SarcyMare · 04/07/2014 10:35

crumble is actually very nice on it's own, but icecream if it is a bit old and dried out

OhFFSWhatsWrongNow · 04/07/2014 10:35

Just seen that you make your own custard, thank heavens for that!

OP posts:
Lottiedoubtie · 04/07/2014 10:37

Crumble should ideally be eaten dry on it's own.

Or at a push with ice cream.

Custard?!? Never!

OberonTheHopeful · 04/07/2014 10:37

YANBU, custard is the only way to go when it comes to crumble.

RiverTam · 04/07/2014 10:37

ice cream or custard, but not cream, that's just all kinds of wrong.

Also, 'healthy' crumble made with oats and what have you - no, no, no, no, no.

MagpieMama · 04/07/2014 10:38

YABU
People need to stop ruining deserts with cream, ice cream and custard. Enjoy the taste of the actual desert!

I really want some apple crumble now...

Germgirl · 04/07/2014 10:43

Exactly what Tam said. Don't gaff about with crumble by adding oats & whatnot. I don't even like nuts in crumble. I don't want muesli on my apples. I want flour, butter & sugar.
And custard. And a push, cream, but it's much better with custard.

Joysmum · 04/07/2014 10:44

Can't beat hot pudding with cold ice cream hmmm

littlewhitebag · 04/07/2014 10:49

I don't like custard. Hot puddings should be served with ice cream or lovely whipped double cream. At a push a small amount of cold custard can be served.
