To think apple crumble should definitely be served with custard?

Not either fresh cream or ice cream, but lovely hot warm custard. Grin

Out for a lovely meal last night and just to stuff my face more end the night perfectly I ordered apple crumble. The waitress asked me if I would like cream or ice cream with it. I wanted custard, they don't serve custard with Apple crumble, or indeed any of their puddings Shock

Outrageous! Unacceptable isn't it? Grin

Piping hot apple with cold vanilla ice cream crumble is da shizz. HB vanilla ice cream preferably.

I do love custard though. It's one of the great inventions, up there with the telephone or electricity.

JoeyMaynardsghost · 04/07/2014 10:50

All desserts are great with custard. Even rice pudding. Even if you also have cream which I have done on occasion... Grin

starlight1234 · 04/07/2014 11:17

I don't even like custard Shock

DoJo · 04/07/2014 13:44

YABU - I want it naked, as nature intended, and I want to still be eating it 45 minutes after everyone else at my table has finished because they have all had ice cream and mine's still hotter than the sun!

I never want cream, ice cream (don't like it - I know, I need to hand my ovaries in somewhere!) or custard, but this seems to throw waiting staff completely and they often look at me with a bemused expression saying 'you mean with NOTHING?' when I refuse them all.

Babyleopard23 · 04/07/2014 13:48

YANBU. It should be custard, milk, then double cream on top. Perfect.

Thisvehicleisreversing · 04/07/2014 13:49

I agree, apple crumble should only be served with custard.

I only like it at home or at my mum's though. In restaurants they give you a piddly little dribble of flavourless custard, I much prefer it in a deep bowl with so much Bird's custard you can't see the crumble. Yum.

MagpieMama · 04/07/2014 13:49

Yes DoJo!!

littlepeas · 04/07/2014 13:53

I really like it with ice cream! I like custard too - not fussy!

GemmaTeller · 04/07/2014 13:59

Lashing of double cream for me!

When asked do they want cream, ice cream or custard with a dessert DH and DS say 'Yes' and have a dollop of all three.

ummlilia · 04/07/2014 13:59

I always think of crumble in the autumn/winter , stewing excess fruit that might not get eaten, and at that time of the year it's cool weather, thereby necessitating hot custard. (This thread has reminded me of the channel 4 comedy Friday night dinner-they seem to have crumble every week !)

crazykat · 04/07/2014 14:04

Its got to be custard with crumble whatever fruit is in it.

Ice-cream goes with chocolate fondent/brownies/cake. These should never be eaten with custard which I'm forever telling DH.

OnlyLovers · 04/07/2014 14:08

I like apple crumble with any of custard, cream or ice cream (vanilla or chocolate are best).

IME most restaurants don't give you the custard option. Are they worried it'll be lumpy?

I really want banana and custard now.

Thisvehicleisreversing · 04/07/2014 14:48

Crimble crumble! Grin

SconeRhymesWithGone · 04/07/2014 14:56

Cream or ice cream. But I'm American. We don't pour custard on anything. Smile

beccajoh · 04/07/2014 14:59

Of course it should be served with custard! YADNBU,

KoalaDownUnder · 04/07/2014 15:00

No. Ice cream.

Custard is crap, and doesn't achieve the hot/cold contrast. Cream is a poor substitute.

Big whacking lumps of ice cream. Grin

squoosh · 04/07/2014 15:03

'Custard is crap'

Shock Shock Shock

MaryBennett · 04/07/2014 15:05

Hmmmm. Might have to sit and think about this....

Custard should always be available whether there is crumble or not. And if I had to choose, ooooh it's so difficult.... Cream.

Feeling relieved.

(Troops off to examine cupboards and fridge)

MaryBennett · 04/07/2014 15:06

YANBU.

Americans are unreasonable.

SconeRhymesWithGone · 04/07/2014 15:09

Actually, the best thing on apple crumble or apple pie is a slice of a really sharp cheddar.

squoosh · 04/07/2014 15:11

My mother claims there is a shortage of custard in Irish shops because Polish immigrants love it so much that they're posting it all home. She takes this as evidence that the Polish people are a people of good taste.

Kikaninchen · 04/07/2014 15:11

Hmm, I am considering making a crumble for tonight now. Maybe apple and pear.

I agree, hot custard with hot crumble. Never ever ice cream. But cream is good with leftover crumble from the fridge.

PomPomPingPong · 04/07/2014 15:23

Mmm crimble crumble just the thing after a nice bit of squirrel Thisvehicleisreversing Smile

Binkybix · 04/07/2014 15:29

No. You need the hot/cold contrast. It's important.

squoosh · 04/07/2014 15:30

Hot/cold contrast is imperative.
