To think apple crumble should definitely be served with custard?

Not either fresh cream or ice cream, but lovely hot warm custard. Grin

Out for a lovely meal last night and just to stuff my face more end the night perfectly I ordered apple crumble. The waitress asked me if I would like cream or ice cream with it. I wanted custard, they don't serve custard with Apple crumble, or indeed any of their puddings Shock

Outrageous! Unacceptable isn't it? Grin

my rule is ice cream on hot puddings and nice hot custard on cold puddings!! Grin

ariadneoliver · 04/07/2014 15:49

YANBU anything but custard is wrong, forgivable possibly, but nonetheless wrong.

KoalaDownUnder · 04/07/2014 15:53

Does anyone have a good crumble recipe, btw? (Yes, I know you're not supposed to need a recipe for crumble. But every time I try to wing it, my crumble turns out...lacking)

Crinkle77 · 04/07/2014 15:53

Cream for me but then I am not a big custard fan.

OOAOML · 04/07/2014 15:54

I have custard, DH has ice cream. The children clearly worry they are missing out on something and want both. We give them a little of each but it seems really weird to me.

squoosh · 04/07/2014 15:55

Oh yes, can everyone post their best crumble recipe? Recipes containing oats need not apply.

FraidyCat · 04/07/2014 15:57

Custard is crap, and doesn't achieve the hot/cold contrast

Yes it can. I was brought up on hot custard home-made from powder, but a cold carton of pre-made custard from the fridge on a hot pie is also nice... (and is creamier than home-made.)

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 04/07/2014 15:58

Cream and custard - Mmmmm!

My lot like ice-cream. I'll have anything Grin

But certainly, if a pub/restaurant is serving crumble, the choice of custard should be there, alongside the cream and ice-cream options.

Some puddings, as previously mentioned (like sticky-toffee) can only be served with cream or ice-cream

KoalaDownUnder · 04/07/2014 16:00

Fraidy, never thought of that! Have only ever had homemade, always thick and hot. Hmm, that sheds a new light on the matter...

hugoagogo · 04/07/2014 16:00

Crumble must have custard.

If you want cream with it, I can accept that, but ice cream should be eaten alone- it does not go with cake or crumble or pie. ffs

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 04/07/2014 16:05

I agree with you, it doesn't go with cake, Hugo - but with some puddings and pies, it is DELICIOUS!!!!

Contrast of hot and cold, crunchy and smooth - all of those things combined together.
What is wrong with you? Grin

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 04/07/2014 16:06

I think this is where ice-cream is so versatile! It CAN be eaten alone, and savoured accordingly. BUT - it also can go with lots of other things to make them . . . . . special!

FraidyCat · 04/07/2014 16:06

Slightly off-topic, but my (non-British) grandfather used to tell us, in low and amazed tones, that Americans ate steak and ice-cream together. (I'm not sure where he got this from, he was a prisoner of war in Italy then Germany for four years, maybe he was liberated by Americans.)

KoalaDownUnder · 04/07/2014 16:07

All I know is that at any family gathering, there'll be one fucker who'll scoop the serving spoon down on an angle into the crumble dish. Thereby snagging themselves a bigger topping-to-filling ratio than everyone else.

Angry
EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 04/07/2014 16:08

FraidyCat Grin Grin Grin (and YEUCH)!!

I think all sorts of weird and wonderful concoctions were eaten during the war - especially if one was a prisoner. I guess you just took what you were given.

I'd give it a go, though Smile

MrsCosmopilite · 04/07/2014 16:09

They should offer custard, cream, and ice cream. Or any combination thereof. That's pudding!

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 04/07/2014 16:10

Grin Koala
Yep, always one!

MirandaGoshawk · 04/07/2014 16:11

I hate this 'should' thing, as in it should be eaten with [insert personal preference], but I agree that I would expect a restaurant to offer a choice of cream, Ice-cream or custard.

Crazyblonde · 04/07/2014 16:14

I'm tired and just want to go home but now I'm going to have to stop at the supermarket and buy apple crumble and some custard as I NEED it after reading this.

MirandaGoshawk · 04/07/2014 16:14

Fraidy - I worked in the French countryside for a while and a farmer told me that British people eat their meat with jam Hmm. Eventually got to the bottom of this - turkey with cranberry sauce! blame the Americans

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 04/07/2014 16:16

Ha ha, Miranda! Also, pork with apple sauce, maybe.

FraidyCat · 04/07/2014 16:17

I think all sorts of weird and wonderful concoctions were eaten during the war - especially if one was a prisoner.

I don't think prisoners got steak, or ice-cream!

The only time he said anything about the war to us kids (I might have been about 12 at the time) he mentioned going with someone to fetch a vat of soup (carried back to the hut by two men using poles slung through the handles) and seeing a horses head being lifted out just before they were allowed to cart it off.

SconeRhymesWithGone · 04/07/2014 16:22

Steak and ice cream? Never thought of that. But we are having a community cook-out for the Fourth of July and my neighbor's four-year-old is at this moment eating a hot dog and ice cream.

All the crumble recipes I know of have oats. It's what makes it so healthy. Smile

squoosh · 04/07/2014 16:24

Don't forget lamb with mint jelly!

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 04/07/2014 16:24

Didn't mean to be flippant, Fraidy - only commented on the POW thing because you did!
Some POWs were quite well treated.
When I lived in Germany, my landlord and bank manager had both been British POWs, and they were treated wonderfully well and had no hesitation in regaling me with hilarious tales.
Not the same for everyone, I know.
