To think apple crumble should definitely be served with custard?

Not either fresh cream or ice cream, but lovely hot warm custard. Grin

Out for a lovely meal last night and just to stuff my face more end the night perfectly I ordered apple crumble. The waitress asked me if I would like cream or ice cream with it. I wanted custard, they don't serve custard with Apple crumble, or indeed any of their puddings Shock

Outrageous! Unacceptable isn't it? Grin

This thread has made me hanker for some peach cobbler to go with our Fourth of July evening picnic. Just sent DH to get the peaches and ice cream.

icelandicsaga · 04/07/2014 20:10

Possibly, but I don't like cream!

Openupyoureyes · 04/07/2014 20:17

The only way to eat crumble is with a scoop or three of ice cream on top then hot custard poured over the top. A taste sensation Grin

Mercedes519 · 04/07/2014 20:20

So this thread is why I'm sat here eating rhubarb crumble and CUSTARD.

Bastard Tesco's had no apple crumble Sad

Binkybix · 04/07/2014 20:24

I would have cold custard with banana, and that's ok because banana's not a proper afters so it doesn't contravene my earlier rule.

I think we can all (nearly all) agree that milk is just fucking weird. But I might try it next time because you never know!

flipchart · 04/07/2014 20:26

Crumble and loads of Evap milk!!

squoosh · 04/07/2014 20:30

Rhubarb crumble is better that apple Mercedes.

squoosh · 04/07/2014 20:30

than

merrymouse · 04/07/2014 20:31

YABU. Crumble much better with e.g clotted cream, ice cream or at a push cold custard.

Hot custard is usually not nice.

Mercedes519 · 04/07/2014 20:32

sqoosh it was nice Grin

I really wanted blackberry and apple but I only get that when I go and pick my own blackberries.

And then put custard on it. As is right and proper...

merrymouse · 04/07/2014 20:34

Ooh, my mum used to do milk with hot puddings. (Maybe because brought up with rationing). It's actually not bad. Definitely better than hot custard.

Safmellow · 04/07/2014 20:39

Yes! Evaporated milk

Also, condensed milk on toast..mmm.....

merrymouse · 04/07/2014 20:41

Having said that, it's all a bit irrelevant as crumble can only be made properly at home.

SinglePringle · 04/07/2014 20:43

The thing that is word with this pudding is the apple crumble itself.

Not a huge fan of apples at the best of times but cooked ones? No. No. No.

And No again.

SinglePringle · 04/07/2014 20:44

'Word'?! Wrong, obviously...

MsVenus · 04/07/2014 20:50

Crumble always must be served with custard...I've just sent dh out to get some crumble & custard because of you lot!

SconeRhymesWithGone · 04/07/2014 20:57

Cold custard and bananas definitely go together, particularly in that great Southern US dessert known as banana pudding (which must have British antecedents because technically it is a trifle.)

Serendipity30 · 04/07/2014 21:07

That's disgusting, never go there again, apple crumble should be with custard and that's it.

BonjourMinou · 04/07/2014 21:09

YADNBU. Custard all the way. Cream is acceptable as a second choice, but ice cream will never be anything but a disappointment.

ouryve · 04/07/2014 21:12

Custard or cream.

Though I'd go without, if eating out, since I'm lactose intolerant and apple crumble not made by me is too much of a risk, given the odds of side effects.

BigChocFrenzy · 04/07/2014 21:24

Blackberry and apple pie is the best, not crumble, provided the pastry is well-cooked. Then lashings of really thick cold cream.
Wink

Custard can be a horrible experience unless the restaurant is really good:
lumps, luke warm, tasting of cornflour.
Sometimes it's ready-made vanilla sauce pretending to be custard
Cream and ice cream are much safer to order.

acsec · 04/07/2014 21:27

It can be served with cream, ice cream or even natural yogurt if there is no custard available. However, when custard is on offer it must be cold and the crumble hot!

GemmaTeller · 04/07/2014 21:31

Cold milk? as in semi skimmed or full fat?

Either way - nooooooooooooooooooooooo

I was once in a restaurant with a group of women and one of them asked the waitress if the custard was 'proper Birds custard'.

hugoagogo · 04/07/2014 21:34

Plum crumble is the best.

Notso · 04/07/2014 21:43

I hate Birds custard, it mings. Hot custard mings.

I will eat the Madagascan vanilla type stuff but only cold.
