To think apple crumble should definitely be served with custard?

Not either fresh cream or ice cream, but lovely hot warm custard. Grin

Out for a lovely meal last night and just to stuff my face more end the night perfectly I ordered apple crumble. The waitress asked me if I would like cream or ice cream with it. I wanted custard, they don't serve custard with Apple crumble, or indeed any of their puddings Shock

Outrageous! Unacceptable isn't it? Grin

I agree that rhubarb crumble is better than apple crumble. It's better than plum crumble too.

I'm a custard slut, I like Birds custard/Madagascan/homemade custard.

I think the story behind Bird's custard is quite romantic. Mrs Bird had an egg allergy so Mr Bird devised an egg free custard for her to eat.

A husband who finds solutions to your pudding problems is a keeper.

Yabu....ice cream only. Nothing else will do

Mim78 · 04/07/2014 22:04

Ice cream!

BarefootShirl · 04/07/2014 22:06

Home made custard for me every time

Canshopwillshop · 04/07/2014 22:07

Custard and cream for me - yum!

Vintagecakeisstillnice · 04/07/2014 22:13

Koala bastarding bastards

Back to the question, custard in winter, ice cream in summer, cream on inbetweenie days

Notso · 04/07/2014 22:30

Aww squoosh is that true? What a lovely story shame the result was so nasty
MIL calls Birds her homemade custard Hmm

squoosh · 04/07/2014 22:43

It is Notso! Alfred Bird invented it in 1837. Apparently it wasn't originally intended for sale, he just wanted his wife to have some egg free custard with her crumble!

I like Birds, it's nowhere near as gorgeous as homemade, but I have a soft spot all the same.

Notso · 04/07/2014 22:59

It is a lovely thing to do.

Just chucking this in for an idea but I make little fill tart cases baked in the oven with slightly caramelised fruit (defrosted frozen summer berries or stewed apples are divine) with a dollop of custard on the top of the fruit which is then baked inside the tart. Like a funky jam tart. Crunchy, fruity, custardy AND you can eat them hot I.e. hot custard or cold!

Think I solved the custard temperature issue!

Apple crumble with icecream, double cream and custard sounds good to me.

Even better if it's apple and blackberry.

FayeKorgasm · 05/07/2014 18:00

I add home made toffee sauce with mine. I don't like custard or cream AT ALL!

BackforGood · 05/07/2014 18:46

mmm - sounds nice Faye - how do you make toffee sauce ?
