I'm fairly certain P G Wodehouse characters use the expression "pill" to describe awful people.

My grandma was an Edwardian posho. It is a great expression

Well bloody hell, all these years I thought describing someone as 'a pill' was a positive thing as in they were like medicine. I feel reet daft now Blush

Anyway as you were!

ComposHat - I don't think their CVs are paper thin. (I don't know who Stacey Dooley is, so I can't discuss her). I'm not sure you can really state that worthier candidates have been passed over for their jobs.

Think the Victoria Coren thing is different. As a Coren her name was already more associated with her dad/ brother. Maybe as a Coren Mitchell she feels she finally has her own name.

'You're just like a pill, instead of making me better, you keep making me ill.'
So said Pink. She knew her Wodehouse.

Reasonable point, but just her Dad....her brother is NO match for her imho and she has well eclipsed him now.

Have to disagree with you there: or at least it's a sad state of affairs if she feels she has her 'own' name by adding on someone else's. I would feel differently if David were calling himself Coren Mitchell too! Smile

But I am giving too much away here: I am straight but I just cannot believe how lucky the perfectly average but otherwise unprepossessing David Mitchell has got in lurve!!! Or to put it more charitably, there is probably a lot more too him than meets the eye if La Coren likes him!

Victoria Coren wasn't kept in the shade by her brother and father. David Coren- Mitchell would distinguish her husband from the (far more talented) novelist.

I did think Giles Coren was more famous, but anyway, the dad association is more pertinent. She probably spent years feeling like the family name was a millstone around her neck, while wondering whether she would have been successful without it. My point is that David Mitchell is a 'Mitchell' and Alan Coren was a 'Coren' but only Victoria is a 'Coren Mitchell'. That's her name.
Might be talking bollocks though.

Homonymous- that's the word I was looking for four the 2 David Mitchells. Her husband could have a unique name if he added "Coren'

Win win then!

Actually what you say Patsys makes a lot of sense! I never thought of it that way.

The other thing though is that I think both Victoria and Giles are more than happy and proud to be linked to their father, as well they might be, and he equally was well proud of them, I think especially of Victoria's then burgeoning and now undisputed success at the poker table!

I like charity shops and have picked up a few bargains over the years. But buying second hand, sorry vintage (rolls eyes) the coughing up yet more money to have something chopped up and rehashed sort of defeats the object to meConfused

However....Grin I still think that La Coren could call herself Woman 123 or Jane Doe or something, she would still be a total one-off.

I've read one of DP's books - it was reasonably good. She still annoys me though. Although agree with her recent comments about women always being asked about marriage and babies and men not.

I quite like her. I don't find her irritating in the way I do Claudia (although my friend was on a series she presented and said she was lovely). I like Cherry Healy too. I love the name Cherry too if that is helpful in any way!
