This is now the fourth thread in six months - which must say something about vaping. Thread 3 & links back are here:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/1985116-AIBU-to-carry-on-evangalising-about-electronic-cigarettes-Part-3?pg=1

For all new vapers I will again copy Allergic's great summary of what all the terms mean - but don't hesitate to ask anything about vaping

We all started from scratch & know what how very confusing it can be.

No question is to daft to ask - it really can be a minefield but it is a route to no more cigarettes! (nearly 18 months in for me!)

Allergic's great summary:

""A very simple guide for those who have been a bit overwhelmed by all the variety discussed on this thread. Experienced vapers either ignore, or check for errors please!

There can be a trade off to be considered around cost, variety, overall experience and hassle.

The cigalike ones are the simplest to deal with in that you just unscrew one cart & screw in another. These tend to be the type that you can buy at the local market or shopping centre for a comparatively cheap initial purchase, but the carts they use can be very expensive and tend to be limited in flavours/strengths depending on brand. They can be useful in that they are small, look the most like "real" cigs, and are the most hassle-free, but the experience really isn't as good as other methods and the cost is higher.

The next step is to have a battery and disposable tank type system (CE4 in my case) where you buy the different liquids and fill the tank yourself. The batteries last a few months to a year (about the same or a little longer than the cigalikes) and the tanks (clearomisers) last anything from a couple of weeks to a couple of months - this can be extended by cleaning, but the coils inside do eventually pack in. This method is much cheaper and gives a much more satisfying experience, but has the added faff of unscrewing and topping up the tank rather than just chucking the

You can then go further and use tanks that have replaceable wicks & coils, can be stripped down & "serviced" etc. There's also a lot of variety and complexity available in the overall set-up e.g. variable voltage batteries. All these add to the hassle factor but allow the overall experience to be much better fine tuned to suit the vaper. Cost is a moot point here - you will save money using serviceable tanks, but people that get really into this can spend a fair bit on shiney new toys!

When it comes to the "juice" or liquid there's a hell of a lot of different things to consider - nicotine strength, flavour, the balance of "throat hit" vs vapour etc. But basically there are 3 ways to get the right juice which are buy ready made from a big importer (limited options), buy made to order from a smaller supplier (needs to steep for a few days), or buy the makings & mix your own (hassle, mess & steeping). These have been ordered from minimum hassle/maximum price to maximum hassle/minimum cost.

I'm a naturally lazy person and comparatively new to vaping, so I have a battery & disposable tank system, and am currently buying imported juice (Hangsen pineapple and Smartjuice Red tobacco flavour) which I know has steeped plenty while being shipped over and both brands have very good quality control. I will probably go directly to mostly mixing my own once I get a bit more money at the end of the month to buy all the bits & base liquids, though will probably continue buying the Smartjuice tobacco flavour because I like it so much! I doubt I will go down the road of serviceable tanks unless I get a nice glass one eventually."

Hi all

I'm still faffing around trying to find my ideal kit. I've currently got a ce4 which is producing the right amount of vapour and I've got a selection of different juices but I'm not feeling evangelical yet and probably haven't found the right thing for me so hoping someone can make a suggestion or two.

I ordered 18mg 50/50 split from joose juice in a few flavours (quite like the brandy) and I'm definitely getting the right amount of vapour and the right feel in mouth and throat but it doesn't seem to be doing what a real cigarette does and I always want a real one afterwards. I don't have one but I want one :(

What I'm looking for is the equivalent of a sneaky cigarette where you manage to smoke it in about 6 drags and have a pack of mints afterwards.

Any ideas? I'd love to make this work for me

QueenStromba · 10/03/2014 11:04

You probably want a higher nicotine level Jux.

Jins · 10/03/2014 11:08

You could be right. I gave up smoking a few years ago but have had a few sneaky cigs since then. I decided that my life is better with nicotine in it hence the e-cig.

If I go for a higher nicotine level what split should I go for. I've always tended to hold smoke in my mouth before inhaling. I guess throat hit isn't such an issue

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 10/03/2014 11:10

Well done Jins Flowers

You probably won't find anything that has quite the 'hit' of an actual fag. It's a much gentler way of taking in nicotine because it's mostly absorbed through your mouth and throat, rather than deep in your lungs. Most people do spend longer vaping than they did smoking because of this.

You could try higher nicotine liquid - 24mg, or even higher if you need it. Remember, it's not the nicotine that causes the harm. You can always cut down again later when you are confidently off the fags.

Another thing you could try is higher PG liquid (80/20 maybe) which will give you a bigger throat hit.

Allergictoironing · 10/03/2014 11:11

Hi Jins and welcome to the Nest.

Can I ask how much you were smoking before, and what sort of cigs? There can be loads of different reasons for not getting the same satisfaction from vaping ranging from not enough nicotine, the way the nicotine is absorbed by vaping being different to how it's absorbed by smoking, down to the purely psychological.

One thing I have noticed is that you don't get the immediate nicotine hit from vaping that you do from cigs - this is particularly noticeable for me first thing in the morning. And I still occasionally think I want a cigarette at odd moments, even though I know I would find the taste vile now, usually at times that I would always have a cig before (like after dinner, or if I've just had a really stressful experience).

What might be worth a try to overcome that feeling of needing a quick boost to the nicotine is to have 2 clearos with you at all times, one with a higher nicotine level? And if the higher level one has more PG than VG (more throat hit) that might hit the psychological aspect a bit better?

Allergictoironing · 10/03/2014 11:11

Heh x-post with plenty Grin

Jins · 10/03/2014 11:14

I think I'd better order a few samples of different stuff

This is a bit weird as I'm already off the fags. I've only had about 6 in the last two years. It's just that I've missed smoking so much and I know that I'll take it up again unless I find an alternative.

Jins · 10/03/2014 11:16

Oh and when I was smoking - over two years ago - I was on about 10 silver L&B a day.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 10/03/2014 11:36

Jins, I have a practically full 10ml of 24mg watermelon if you want it? It's too strong and throaty for me.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 10/03/2014 11:37

Mind you, I was smoking 10-20 a day less than 2 weeks ago and it's far too strong for me.

Jins · 10/03/2014 11:47

I don't fancy watermelon much but thanks very much for the offer

If I was swapping from regular smoking I'd be looking at lower levels of nicotine I think. It's just to replace the sneaky cigarette urge so probably needs to be as harsh as I can get :)

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 10/03/2014 11:55

That's fine. :)
If anyone wants it, it's theirs!

Ledare · 10/03/2014 13:32

My Fash-Tech order is here! It shipped on February the tenth for those waiting for theirs. Shiny, shiny, silver ego case. I have filled it with my best kit and am gloating over it Grin

Allergictoironing · 10/03/2014 13:52

They didn't even send mine to Singapore post until 28 Feb, then they sent it out on the 2nd. So goodness knows how much longer I'm going to have to wait Sad.

Which size case did you order Ledare, and how much kit can you get in it? I think I may have ordered the same one....

Ledare · 10/03/2014 14:14

Large. It depends what you want to carry but the main thing is that the precious fits, unless you are using fake GS-H2s which are longer.

I may be getting too attached to that. I even dreamt about it last night. It was able to shoot out fairy dust, coloured lights and even flames at the click of a button. I was so cool Grin

magimedi · 10/03/2014 14:25

Ledare - do you think you need some help? Grin

Actually I would like my vaper to shoot out lights & there are times when I wish it would ex-ter-min-ate!!

OP posts:
Allergictoironing · 10/03/2014 15:34

Magi I'm with Ledare on this, having got the same shiny precious as her. I even get withdrawal symptoms when mine is on charge.

I have medium & large cases on order, as depending on where I am going I'll have different sized bags. But it shouldn't matter too much, as the precious is usually in my pocket when I'm at the kind of thing I take the small bag to (dog shows & country fairs types of thing) so the case would just have to fit a spare battery, couple of (full) spare clearos, some shit earwigs (think you've coined one there Plenty!) etc.

Ledare · 10/03/2014 15:53

Lots of room for what you need then Smile

KatieScarlett2833 · 10/03/2014 17:50

I have a vaping jacket Confused

It's a waxed navy parka from White Stuff with two boob placed side pockets exactly skinny enough to hold a vape stick upright on each side.

Don't know what I'm going to do when it gets warmer though, don't imagine designers will give my vaping needs much thought Grin

Ledare · 10/03/2014 18:12

I vaped into my bag in the supermarket earlier (main shop, needs must)

Perhaps moving somewhere colder would enable you to best utilise your vaping jacket?

KatieScarlett2833 · 10/03/2014 18:15

I live in Scotland, summer is usually only a fortnight at best. Maybe I'll take a trip to Antarctica this year.

Thanks Ledaire, another problem solved Grin

Ledare · 10/03/2014 18:38

You could totally stealth-vape undetected there.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 10/03/2014 19:08

Katie, I have been holding mines in the middle bone bit of my bra Blush

KatieScarlett2833 · 10/03/2014 20:52
Grin Brilliant for stealth vaping.
Cantabile · 11/03/2014 10:47

I have found myself vaping openly in bigger shops Blush

This Black Tea from FastTech is really nice. I've been vaping it since last night. Fruity, well rounded. A surprising flavour.
